And the part where Taimur said he felt marginalized is so true, growing up in a Pakistani family the one thing everyone dreams of is being a doctor or an engineer, anything outside that you're considered a failure. I'm Arab and I would say 80% of my family are Doctors, but neither my mother, father or family have ever pressured me to be a doctor. Ironically externally there seems to be an assumption that I will become a doctor (I'm not medically inclined by the way). It's to the point that me and my family were at mosque and an aunty came up to me, my mum and my sisters and starts asking about what we have applied to for uni. Neither me and my sister have applied for medicine and we tell her honestly what our choices are, and then the aunty says to my mum "But aren't they smart? Why wouldn't they pick medicine?" as if that has to be the default choice of everyone with good grades and a medical family. So it can be very pressuring. Even if you aren't pressured by your family, I find that there is a tacit expectation from teachers and acquaintances that arabs/asians/muslims in general will study medicine.

    I got Taimur's feeling as an outsider and devalued. I am a chemical engineer and for years ppl did not understand what is a CE they understand mechanical civil but not chemical. So they just give me the same disinterested answers 😂

    Taimur, I feel you. ❤️ My older (and only) brother is a neurosurgeon! I’m obviously the family disappointment being just a psychologist. Happy to join you in one of these all meds gathering and talk spreadsheets all the time. Some might not see it this way, but spreadsheets can save lives too!

    • @reezis1619
      @reezis1619 Před 3 lety

      I've never seen someone calling a psychologist a dissappointment before, thats weird, where I live it is just as difficult getting in to med school as studying as a psychologist. It is just a matter of personal opinion which one you prefer the most

    I feel like Taimur is hugely accomplished and would benefit a lot from understanding that from his own side. I sympathize with his struggles with being compared to physicians; a huge part of my social circle is physicians and though I chose to study dentistry for a multitude of reasons, it is by no means because medicine was somehow too difficult or unachievable. There is a certain idolatry with physicians, and though I agree that medicine is an incredibly difficult field, the fact that someone does something else doesn't mean we have to fall victims to our environment. That said I identify a lot with Ali as well, having interests in science, healthcare, design, and productivity. I think having a career that spans both something people need (healthcare) and want (self-development, online learning, etc.) is fascinating. It's been great following your journey, Ali. And I checked out Causal; it's super polished and I can see it being exceptionally powerful, so I hope Taimur finds a lot of success in that.

    so for me
    confidence: being / feeling comfortable with who you are
    and then i think there are two type of arrogant
    type 1: you think you’re better than someone else (which can very well be true)
    type 2: you treat people as if you’re something better (i hate that)
