- After 4 months since I announced it, here it is, the Perfect Agent speedrun that was the most requested difficulty. Accomplished on December 29th, 2015.
While I'm really happy with how this turned out, this can be really improved on. There were a lot of parts where I messed up or went too slow (For example, in Carrington Institute I had to take the "safe" route because I was really close to death and it would ruin the run).
This is a single-segment RTA (Real Time Attack) run which means it's all played in the same session and the timer won't stop counting until I kill the last Skedar king and the cutscene plays.
For those wondering, yes, every time I failed or died I started from the first mission. Not entirely needed, but I wanted to have that challenge.
This was played on Xbox One through Rare Replay. The loading times are almost instant on the Xbox One, which didn't happen in 360 where the load time was slower than this, but still short and fast. (Not to mention the N64 one that took ages compared to these)
Not everything is better though, the controller acts differently than the 360 one so the angle to get the max strafe speed is different and harder to get, so in some parts I'm not going at full speed where I would on 360 / N64.
I need some more time to get used to the controller. As you can see in some parts I randomly crouch because I accidentally press the stick button trying to get that strafe angle.
I'll get back to improving this whenever I feel like it and after much practice, for now I'm going to rest a bit from PD single-segment runs.

The Freeman Initiative He's referring to lag caused by processing graphics. Machine thing. You'd know if you've played the N64.
@George - lag caused by processing graphics? i dont know why processing graphics would give you a higher ping, but even if that was the case, it wouldnt apply here anyway because its not Online Multiplayer. I have played the N64
The Freeman Initiative OK, you may be a bit too accurate in your terminology. The more correct term is "framing', a fps drop due to processing, which has of course nothing to do with any ping. This was existent in perfect dark.

This was most unexpected. I had no idea anyone was even going for this. Congrats on the run and all the sick strats I haven't even tried going for in a full game run.
+fastandferious2 Thank you! I've been working on this for the past few months but never really announced it or anything. This is heavily inspired by Big Bossman's N64 WR (53:48) run from 2014, too, so a lot of the strats except a few that I failed or changed are from there. I also saw your WR from a few weeks ago, it's good to see other people doing PA single-segment runs.
At various points in this video, I said to myself, "I didn't know you could do that!" Goes to show that even after playing a game for 20 years, there can still be a lot to learn.

Me ha llamado mucho la atención leer en los comentarios que eres de España, me alegra por fin haber encontrado a otro español que hace speedruns de Perfect Dark. ¿Tienes records del Perfect Dark original (jugado en la N64 quiero decir, no en emulador)? Lo digo porque no me suena haberte visto nunca por los foros/rankings de The-Elite.net (aunque tampoco he estado demasiado activo estos últimos años), y a juzgar por los tiempos que haces y las strats que usas asumo que los conoces (?).
Por cierto, muy buen speedrun. Me han gustado las strats que has usado en alguna misión. Nunca he intentado hacer una 'RTA deathless run' en Perfect Agent, será divertido intentarlo.

No tengo ningún record en la N64 original, más que nada porque hasta recientemente no tenía forma de grabar el juego original con buena calidad. Algunas strats que uso aquí no me salen en N64 aún, sobretodo las de la primera fase, pero espero que con práctica me salgan algún día.
Para este RTA run utilicé como base muchos de los speedruns de Big Bossman, me paso a veces por The-Elite.net a ver los foros y rankings pero no estoy registrado.

how did you do the goldeneye 007-style reloads at some points? (the gun just goes down and you get the full mag)

On XBLA it's done by pressing Y then B, on N64 press A and then A+Z at the same time.

Sorry dude, i have some questions to make: You speak spanish?, the cheat unlocking in PD follows the same way as GE? you know, the first mission in Secret agent, the next in Perfect Agent, the next in Agent etc etc, and last, you can tell me from where is your profile pic? Cheats unlock the same way as in GE, yes. For some you must complete in Agent, others in Secret Agent, and some in Perefct Agent. This time they each have a description before you unlock them to show you how to unlock them, though. (You go to the cheats screen, hover to one you don't have unlocked and it'll tell you how to unlock it - "Complete "X" level before "Y" time under XX:XX".
My profile picture is actually Joanna Dark from Perfect Dark for the Gameboy Color, that's why I added it over Joanna's face for the thumbnail here. I took the picture of it when I was playing through it back in 2012 or so, it's been my profile picture since then in almost everything.

Are you using the legacy control mode in the Advance settings so you can move faster with the right stick?
No, I'm using the default modern control scheme. The sticks were calibrated for the 360 controller so you can get the max speed while strafing but it's hard to get that sweetspot with the Xbox One controller, which is what I'm using here.
I know this is old but when I switched to legacy controls and got used to it. It was so much easier to keep my speed. Felt really close to n64

Think you could do some comparison videos between this and the N64 version? Basically nobody uploads footage of this after that brightness update and HD becoming available, so comparison videos will now show all of the tiny differences like textures and such.

I might do one some time if I feel like it / get the time for it. But would you want original N64 hardware or emulator at 1080p/60fps? Keep in mind, if I do it with the original N64 hardware it'd have to wait even more because I have nothing to record it for now.
Graslu00 That's a good question, probably real N64 as that would help show off how much of a graphical improvement the XBLA version is, I'll gladly wait for you to get N64 recording software, I just wanted to know if you'd be okay with doing that.

Goddam you are amazing I've recently got the rare replay my self but I've been playing it since I was little in the N64 oh the memories well anyway I've 100% the game on the Xbox 360 version last year but now I'm playing the game again on the Xbox one Gotta ask how do you strafe really good it's kinda difficult to get the right direction
It's rather hard with the Xbox One controller since PD XBLA was calibrated for the 360 one. You need to find the sweetspot by moving it diagonally almost perfectly. You can also try the classic control scheme, which means you'd have to press forward on the left stick and left or right on the right stick, but it might be bad for aiming.
Oh do you mean legacy I've started using it recently it's way easier to strafe on it but it still feels like I'm not going the fastest angle so weird gotta do it just right
Yeah it's not optimal to do it on Xbox One.
I may do a better speedrun on 360 with its controller to beat this time some day.

They're just a bit longer, but I'm sure the optimal strafing during the whole run would still take off a few minutes from the final time even with the second or two longer loading times.

Have you figured out how to sidestrafe with the X1 controller? I try in Goldeneye but it's pretty damn hard compared to a PS3 controller
I haven't tried the X1 controller on the N64 emulator, but I'm afraid the only way to do good strafing on the N64 version is either mouse and keyboard or an actual N64 controller.
For the 360 version it's way harder to hit the strafe sweetspot on the X1 controller, but with the 360 one is way easier since it's calibrated for it. I don't know if using the X1 Elite controller lets you calibrating it, but I'm not buying that.
It can become easier depending on the deadzone of your controller on the 360, considering how worn down analog sticks get more floaty. Only, that comes with it's issues as well.
How do you handle the nintendo 64 version's single-analogue stick controls?
Do you prefer 1.1 or 1.2?
And last, how fast did you beat the first level in agent mode? I reached 34, 93 seconds on my last run (no door glitch).
I used to use 1.1 as a kid, but now I prefer 1.2 way better. It's more precise for aiming and more accurate strafing.
As for the first level, I don't remember, something around 20-30 seconds without the door glitch (If you know where to skip the cinematic you can get the elevator open so you just go downstairs, take the elevator, and get to the lab). With the glitch it was 5 seconds.

You don't even need to go down the stairs.
Just end the cutscene as soon as the very first building you see is completely out of view,
and rush to the left elevator (which will take you to ground level)
. This is if you're reffering to the 2nd set of stairs, and not the 1st one that leads to the office.

I'm from Spain, so I kept spanish on the console settings so it didn't change my location for the leaderboards (It shows UK if you use EU english).
I use english here on my videos because it gets to a wider audience, or at least that's what I thought when I started with GoldenEye and I just sticked with it.

Do you have a non-standard controller? I gave up on speedrunning PDXBLA because it was so inconsistent to find the strafing sweet spot on a standard controller. So I decided to beat all the levels except attack ship on DLTK instead for a challenge.
No, I'm using the original Xbox One controller and as stated on the description, it's really hard to get the sweet spot there as you said. The 360 one though should work really well.
Despite the WR, this run isn't really optimal and could be improved by a lot if I used the 360 controller on the original hardware, which I may do some day.
I had a friend with a Mad Catz controller who would run circles around me in combat simulator. I had so much trouble finding the perfect strafe angle. I guess people who play legacy controls have no problems except with slowing on corners.

También se siente genial saber que aunque somos pocos todavía hay comunidad speedrunner hispanohablante en esta joya de juego. I don't think I'll ever get a Series X, unless it releases on PC I don't think I'll get back to XBLA either as I find the controls extremely annoying. Getting good strafes and precise shots is really hard with modern controllers.

So all the glitches and tricks are possible on the 360 version? Why do people still run the N64 version if that's the case? Why are there barely any speedruns of the 360 version in general?
Not all of them, those that require lag from frame drops cannot be done here. As for why not many people run this I cannot really say. N64 has more history behind it and records so that's probably a reason.

Those are officially the world records, if you saw one faster it's probably a TAS (Tool-Assisted Speedrun), where the player controls the game frame-by-frame with savestates so it's basically perfect accuracy. It's not considered a hack, it's just another category inside speedrunning.

+Connor Kennway Oh the in-game leaderboard, I got confused for a second and thought someone actually got 37 minutes on a single-segment run.
As you can see it says I got 50m 57s there instead of the 54m 18s, that's because the leaderboard counts the time by stage, not the single-segment. That means you can go level by level getting the best possible time with the hardest strats that you wouldn't try to pull on single-segmented runs since they're too risky, but there you can restart as many times as you want so it doesn't matter if you fail it.
I believe h8 bees is legit, just that he did that, went level by level getting pretty good times on every mission until he got that 1st place. That'd fall under another category in speedrunning.
The leaderboard has some cheaters, like completing the first level under a second, but I don't see those on the general leader board like the one I was showing there.

How do you strafe in the Xbox version?
Same as N64, by running in diagonal.

No, left stick is all movement and right is aiming, though there's an option to make it "classic" and it's how you said. The issue on this run though is that the Xbox One controller is not calibrated properly for this game, so it's hard to hit the perfect strafing sweetspot.

Man, I wish I had bought an Xbox 360 instead so I could play this. I'm not sure if they still sell the 360 and Perfect Dark though since the game was released 7 years ago.
It's still available on Xbox 360 (It was a digital release) and Xbox One through Rare Replay.

No, Rare Replay is a colleciton of Rare games for Xbox One which includes this. For Xbox 360 Perfect Dark is sold individually as a Xbox Live Arcade title.
Which is the better game--Golden Eye or Perfect Dark?
Technically Perfect Dark is superior in every way, but in the end they're different games because of the little things.
Which is your personal favorite?
I'd have to say Perfect Dark, probably. But again each have different stuff that makes the game feel different, some of those I prefer GoldenEye and others Perfect Dark, but PD is just a more complete experience.

Can you see if you could show me the cheat/glitch you used for the first level?
+agent001 It's pretty easy. You just have to drop from the helipad and crouch while you're in the air, get close to the door and you'll land on an invisible pixel. From there just go in through the right part of the light and when you notice you're falling quickly stand up mid-air and you should be good to go. On N64 it's a bit harder, easier to wait until the guard opens the door in the cinematic and land there like I did the second time.

Got tbh though not a fan of speed runs. Just think so long as you complete the missions who cares how fast? But obviously some people do. Takes fun out of the game for me and don't get the point but then I suppose a lot of people like speed runs.. It seems anyway.
The point of a speedrun is to complete the game as fast as possible by any means necessary, not to just complete the missions - that's just a playthrough - and us speedrunners did that hundreds of times. It's a different way to play a game, what's the issue?
@@Graslu00 not an issue really, except maybe games are not designed to be played that way. Like the level where you shoot the helicopter and cassandra's guards. Part of game is if you shoot all the first lot of gaurds in the head with night vision you get the magnum. Of course if you want to play it differently aka a way the game is not meant to be played that's entirely up to you. Like I said I don't have an issue except I don't get the real point of speed runs. Daft way to play any game imo..and note I said imo.
@@Graslu00 p.s probably a lot to do with nowadays I get motion sickness playing games so speed run is out of the question for me but that said I never liked the idea of speed runs. Either play the game properly or not at all. But years ago like in the 90's when I first got my n64 I could play rhe thing all day and not get motion sickness but not now. But even so I don't think I would like the idea of speed runs. But that's not to say other people can't do them. I dont think it is a right way to play the games. But age thing for me too probably. I am 47 even the idea that people can be celebs on CZcams where people upload fun videos from their homes can make someone famous is just crazy to me. But oddly enough that seems to be the way things are nowadays. It is very weird but it is what it is. But for me someone on CZcams is never a celeb. Sorry I just see things differently. I find your videos helpful but even my first comment was how fast your were doing it was just too fast and unnecessary. Maybe I should unsubscribe as this is how you play the games and I simply don't agree games are meant to be played this way. I mean unsubscribe as that's obviously what you do, not unsubscribe for any bad reason.

@@zombeat7376 Thing is, there's no way to "properly" play a game as you mention. Speedruns is part of this in fact, which is why they give you a timer every level and timed unlocks for the cheats as well. Beating your par time is always an extra objective if you want to push yourself for it, and the developers knew this. The good design of these games as well is what allows you to complete any level the order you want, you have freedom, it's not linear but a sandbox level where you can complete it however you like and usually at any order you'd prefer. There's absolutely nothing forcing you to do one thing first or an specific way - it's by design.
You don't have to speedrun to enjoy speedruns either, or hell you don't even have to enjoy speedruns to *respect* speedruns. If you don't like them that is fine, of course, but don't push people to play the game "the desired way" because there is none.
As for unsubscribing, I don't mind of course, but please do realise that out of the 815 (!!!) videos I have on this channel, only 7 are speedruns. If my normal playing is too fast that is too bad, but it's not speedrunning in the slightest. Being good at a game doesn't equal to just speedrunning, and being fast also doesn't mean you're speedrunning. I don't see the point on going slow when it's not necessary when your objective is to complete a mission. If they're custom levels I always take the time to showcase the new scenery as well.

Not too many compete on RTA runs, but individual levels are still ran to this date. A few days ago a new glitch was found for Villa, in fact.
