    Alex is really right about the movie being an extremely ballsy move by the Marvel execs. I remember before this movie came out in theaters, I thought, "Well, this'll be the first bomb. Welcome to the cosmic side of the MCU, Marvel took a huge gamble with James Gunn's bottom of the barrel hero choice. While I knew of the Guardians of the Galaxy in 2010, a big majority had no idea who they were. James Gunn brought the GotG to the top, he was given free control of everything. The studio did ask him to put in Thanos, but that's all the meddling they did. Now, onto Age of Ultron.

      I watched this first when my Mom was in her last weeks with cancer. It absolutely eviscerated me. I had to walk away and come back (I'd missed in theaters, so I was lucky to have friends who patiently waited and let me collect myself. I still associate this movie with those times. I waited to show it to my Dad (who was catching up on Marvel too) because I knew he needed time. They were high school sweethearts and was right by her side until the end. I missed being there by less than ten minutes. I'm really glad the movie doesn't dwell on that aspect too much, otherwise I'd never be able to rewatch it.
      I also love his reticence to open that last present to him. I still have cards (ones we found after her death) and even a few presents she had misplaced, that I haven't opened. They're some of the last "new" things from her I'll ever experience. Once they're gone, all I have is memories, nothing new ever again. It's another note of finality in a very final situation and confronting that is really hard.

It then grossed US$16,295,774 in the United States and US$21,667,000 worldwide for a total of US$37,962,774. Costing $30-$37 million, and grossing $38 million at the box office is not a "good profit". The film makers don't get the gross amount, just a portion of it. So it lost a good amount of money for the studio. It made additional money later from VHS and TV, but it was considered a financial failure at the box office, as well as a critical failure (film critics hated it). It became a cult classic, but that's a separate thing, and happens after those other things are judged.

James Gunn hid secret messages within all the location text in this movie and it has yet to be completely solved (Gunn confirmed New Rockstars decoded about 3/4 of it). 3. Drax (the character with the dead wife and daughter) is played by former WWE wrestler Batista, Gamora (the green girl) is played by Zoe Saldana who was well known for being the alien girl from Avatar so there’s a bit of a theme going on there 😅 Rocket is voiced by Bradley Cooper and nonhumans not knowing that he’s a raccoon and his obsession with prosthetics are running gags so look out for them. Michael Rooker who plays Yondu has been in pretty much every James Gunn movie, there is joke that Gunn just makes movies to give Rooker work. The end credit scene was just more Gaurdians content. The final post-credit scene features Howard the Duck, an obscure Marvel character from the 1970s who has a cult following. In the mid-80s, there was an historically awful Howard the Duck movie, so this is a re-introduction to the character and a seriously deep cut easter egg.

    I know that others have explained that the last scene is Howard the Duck, but the "joke" here is actually pretty complicated.
    Put simply, Steve Gerber created the character in 1973 during his stint on Adventures Into Fear, but was eventually replaced due to a failure to meet deadlines. In 1980 Gerber sued Marvel stating that he held exclusive rights to the character. This was the first big legal case about creator's rights vs. work for hire in comics.
    Although that case was settled in 1982, the failed 1986 film created new legal issues with Lucasfilm now holding the film rights to the character. When Disney bought Lucasfilm, Marvel finally got the character back.
    So the end credits scene is basically a giant F-You to 30 years of copyright battles over a fairly minor character.

    Basically what you need to understand is, this was "The Moment" that the MCU revealed what it's plan was. In the begining, Joss Whedon basically told Marvel, "Here's what you need." He sold them on the idea of doing 5 or 6 movies to show off different characters first. THEN, they made the Avengers film. The infinity stones were first teased in Thor, with the Tesseract. At that point, everyone thought it was JUST, a fun Easter egg for the comic book fans. Then Thantos was revealed at the end of Avengers, and no one believed it. THIS, was the first film that actively told fans, "NO SERIOUSLY. WE'RE GOING THERE." The guardians of the Galaxy, was a comic that was waaaaay less popular even among comic book fans. But that's why Joss chose this film to be made. It set up perfectly, as a kind of bus to both explain the larger universe at large, as well as explain the dangers (And this a looming Future) of what was to come. OFFICIALLY, Thantos & the Infinity War saga was the end of a massive comic run. And afterwards, Marvel sid a kind of reboot of course. If you want to follow the plot accurately, the next film you should watch should be either Thor: The Dark World, or Iron Man 3. As both deal with aftermath of what's happening on Earth post NY invasion.

  • @wompa70
    @wompa70 Před 2 lety +3

    Iron Man was popular but far from a “big” name. The truly big characters, Spidey, X-Men, Fantastic Four, even Hulk, we’re licensed to other studios. Marvel really didn’t have another to use. The big risk was casting RDJ.
    Guardians of the Galaxy was a return to risky moves that worked out so well with Iron Man. I wish they still believed in taking risks.

    • @jeezrice7352
      @jeezrice7352 Před 2 lety

      I mean, I’m not saying that every marvel film/tv as of late doesn’t have common aspects that would eventually become their go-to formula. However, I also don’t think you can say that they don’t still believe in taking risks, when they have been wildly varying in tone, theme, and are using lesser-known-and-beloved characters like she-hulk, moon knight, Ms. Marvel. etc., and are putting them in the spotlight. Wandavision and Loki were using established and popular characters but the format they used in presenting those shows definitely took risk, as they were very different then most other marvel media. Eternals, M.O.M. and Love and Thunder, regardless of our personal opinions on the quality of said films, did take risks in trying to do something different and adding different elements that weren’t really commonplace in the majority of the MCU franchise. Again, this is not a critique of the quality of those varying media, that is another topic, I just don’t think it’s really fair criticism to say that they don’t try to take risks anymore.
