    When tens of thousands of people are singing to an instrumental, you know it’s something special. Great job.

  • @krash66
    @krash66 Před 3 lety +6

    The crowd was literally singing an instrumental. That says it all about this magical band.
    BTW, YYZ is the aviation call sign for Toronto airport (Where Rush is from). The rhythm at the beginning is YYZ in Morse code.

  • @maximelesperance4132
    @maximelesperance4132 Před 3 lety +33

    The song does have a meaning:
    YYZ are the call signs of Toronto’s Pearson’s airport (their home). So, whenever they saw the tags on their bags saying YYZ, they knew they were finally heading back home to their families.
    One day, One of them (Neil I believe) heard the Morse code tone in the plane announcing the YYZ airport, he liked the sound of it, and created the into of the song (yes, the intro is Morse code for YYZ).

    Of course, for our good Canadian boys, the title should be pronounced Why Why Zed :)
    Rush released a lot of great studio albums, and most included at least one instrumental track.
    From 1974 -2012, they released 19 studio albums, 11 live albums, and 11 compilations. They have the 3rd most consecutive gold or platinum albums, behind The Beatles and The Stones.
    But they really showed what they could do in live shows. Neil Peart is widely regarded as one of the greatest percussionists of all time (especially by other drummers). When you check out the drum solo recommended elsewhere, you will see that he sometimes used an even bigger setup, but he could hold everyone's attention with just one snare. Alex Lifeson, similarly, was a virtuoso on lead guitar. And Geddy Lee was a phenomenal bassist, who also played keyboards and was lead singer. His vocals had a lot of detractors, but millions of rabid Rush fans would disagree. He could simultaneously sing, play bass, and would play foot pedal synth.
    I was lucky enough to see them in Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa on various tours. Every one was a fantastic show.

    I agree this was wild, three next suggestions in this order. You said why did it take so long to get to YYZ, then you'll ask the same when you watch:
    Neil Peart Drum Solo live in Frankfurt - he'll play the whole kit you just saw
    Rush - Xanadu, exit stage left live - he actually had more percussion instruments on stage than what you just saw (before electronic drums).
    Working Man - Time Machine Live. - All out screamer. They modified the beginning to be regee before unleashing the face melt.
    Then as a bonus, 2 more instrumentals.
    Via La Strangiato

    As previously stated, YYZ is the IATA airport identification code of Toronto Pearson International Airport. The airport broadcasts YYZ in Morse code, and the band was introduced to the rhythm as Alex Lifeson flew them into the airport, and it stuck with them. The start of the song is YYZ in Morse Code.

    Welcome to the RUSH rabbit hole! You have over 40 years of progressive rock to explore. There are IMO 3 Live staple video's, Neil Peart's Drum Solo - Live in Frankfurt, Xanadu - Live Exit... Stage Left, Working Man - Live in Cleveland. Check out the video for Headlong Flight. A few songs to consider, Spirit of Radio, Tom Sawyer, Witch Hunt, Nobody's Hero, Manhattan Project, plus many, many more... It's a deep hole you are entering but you will not be disappointed!
    Cheers from Canada! 🇨🇦

    Believe it or not, Neil's drumset has actually been larger than this! You should watch the video of Rush's song "Xanadu", from the live 1981 concert film called "Exit, Stage Left"!! The music they were doing in the late 1970's, when the song was written (1977), was very progressive and orchestral. So Neil had tubular bells, wind chimes, Glockenspiel, Wood Blocks, triangles, xylophone, tuned cowbell tree, a Gong Drum (used to have an actual Gong cymbal, back in 1978-1979), and THEN he had all the rest of his huge drum kit, with assorted cymbals!! You have to see that performance to understand how amazing Rush is/was!!

    I know the Rush purists will disagree, but check out the official Tom Sawyer video. It has some terrific drum work, and it showcases each of them and really clearly shows Geddy Lee’s talent as lead singer, bassist and keyboard player in one song. You likely have heard the song and didn’t know it was them-but it’s a great intro to the genius that is Rush. 3 guys making some of the most perfect music ever played, with lyrics that are among the most intelligent ever written. And Neil Peart on drums has often been described as “your favorite drummer’s favorite drummer”. Enjoy the Rush Rabbit Hole-I envy all that you get to discover for the first time.
