In this episode we take a look at some facts, secrets, and history of Metal Gear Solid. Metal Gear Solid is an stealth action game by Konami for the PlayStation, and the series was created by Hideo Kojima. Metal Gear Solid follows the soldier Solid Snake, who attempts to neutralize a terrorist threat from the renegade unit FOXHOUND. The game shipped more than six million copies, and scored an average of 94/100 on Metacritic. A remake called Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes was later released for the GameCube.

I had the same reaction. In this game, a man can read other people's thoughts and control objects with his mind. There's another dude who had this high tech exoskeleton that gave him superstrenght. There are stealth camouflages that render people completely invisible. And let's not forget the giant bipedal robot, of course.
But hey, a kid being able to shoot with a Desert Eagle? Now that's just TOO unrealistic, come on!!

Carpenter knows the difference between a ripoff and an homage. He should, since Halloween was directly inspired by The Thing.
I doubt it Carpenter knew they wouldn't have any grounds for the lawsuit. The company that owns the rights was also was always broke so they sued another movie later on once they won that. Metal Gear has too many differences to be ripoff even Big Boss has an eye patch on a different eye like David Bowie.
This is more a Kojima fact, but I thought it was cool enough to share anyway. Kojima planned a neat real life effect for one of his earlier games, in when the player finds a dead body, the game disc would be spun at a certain speed and create a physical odor that smelled like blood. Not sure why it was cut, but if I had to guess, probably because it would have cost too much to add that feature on every disk.

I've heard of that. I think it was meant for the game 'Snatcher' and the disc was a floppy disk if I recall correctly.

I didn't know about Hayter taking a salary cut so big for Twin Snakes, kind of makes his replacement with Keifer a little more fucked up. I love Keifer's performance as Big Boss too though, so I'm a little torn.
Yeah, same here. David Hayter is pretty passionate about MGS, thankfully Kiefer Sutherland has demostred a similar attitude.
Yeah, Kojima is pretty lucky to pull two guys for that role that seem to genuinely love doing the role. Keifer couldn't have been a better replacement, and Hayter made the role what it is. Serious talent on both of their ends.

I would really love to see an episode on JUST Final fantasy IV (American II). Since it was both IV, II, as well as advance, easy type, and later, the after years. It's one of the raaaare FF games to get a direct sequel to the events in-game.
Still easily my absolute favorite game of all time! And I still have my FFII North American easy type cartridge for the snes.
Additionally, the game was remade into a 3D interface for the DS, and was released into a "complete collection" series for the PSP. And I love how The After Years made it way back to Nintendo for its release. Although, I have the android copy of it.

when i first played this game, i rented it. just the cd's in a generic dvd case with just a paper on the outside with the stores name and the game on it. "you can find her frequency when you look on the back of the case." well fuck. guess i'm checking every. single. frequency.....

Don't feel bad, I did the same thing (checking all the frequencies) but I bought a used copy in a generic case from Best buy.
Still my favorite in the series and it has the best soundtrack, in my opinion.

It was Konami who was responsible for letting Hayter go. I'm not entirely sure whether Kojima took Hayter into consideration when Avi Arad suggested that Kiefer Sutherland would be cast as Venom Snake/Big Boss. Also, I wouldn't say Venom Snake was completely silent, rivalling the likes of Gordon Freeman, he just didn't speak as much lines as Solid Snake or Big Boss when David Hayter voiced the characters.

Haha I knew it! Metal Gear Solid was influenced by Die Hard! Eveytime I watch that masterpiece of a movie, I see elements of THAT masterpiece of a game! The badass maverick attitude John Mclane has, Solid Snake has too! Smoking on the job when it's bad for you, going through the air ventilation system, the rude poster on the locker door, the radio contact with someone on the outside, the stealth elements, multiple weapons usage! I love it! I hope Metal Gear Solid it gets made into a movie, and is just as good as Die Hard!

+carlos fontanez Nope, it was Kim Mai Guest. She and Naomi (Jennifer Hale) just dropped their accents for the GameCube dub, and continued using their adjusted accents for MGS4.
Interestingly enough, if you call Otacon's save frequency enough times in MGS2, Mei Ling will eventually interject to correct Otacon's terrible bastardizations of her proverbs. In this conversation, she's still using her heavy Chinese accent coined from the PSX version of MGS, so apparently they decided to adjust the way she speaks between MGS2 and the Twin Snakes.
In the briefing cutscenes, Snake seems to resemble MacGyver himself, Richard Dean Anderson. which makes more sense because Snake looks bugger-all like Chris Walken.
I find that very interesting that they were making a stab at Square. Friendly rivalry or something more vindictive? I know they were the Japanese company to beat around those days.

this game defined my freshman year of high school beyond words. the music was so captivating and really set the mood and the dialogue. I was disappointed that the game cube remake seemed less emotional and the music/cutscenes were almost corny at times. still my absolute favorite though

I've got a random bit of trivia.
Did you know: One of the weapons that can be used in MG4, the Solar Gun, is a direct reference to another stealth/combat game series by Kojima, Boktai. Recharging the weapon requires Snake to be directly exposed to sunlight, where he then holds the gun upwards, much like Boktai's main character, Django.
That game series needs love. :(

Still my favorite game in the series. As the guys from Smosh Games said in the MGS series Honest Trailer, MGS1 is "the one that blew your tiny child mind". Love it so much!
Metal Gear Solid is the first video game that really just blew me away! It was mind boggling and I traded my N64 in immediately.
I immediately thought this was a Super Bunnyhop video as soon as the intro ended. Not until I looked at the borders.
