they've only got until October before Pharoah releases. I'm betting that they'll compare that game's sales to Shadows of Change and decide from the results whether or not to drop support for TWW, only way for TWW to stay is for Pharaoh to flop harder (which probably won't happen because everything I hear about the game is supposedly good).
we'll likely get Thrones of Decay either way, maybe it'll even be a final chance for CA to see that TWW is worth supporting, but if that also does bad compared to Pharaoh sales we can say goodbye to support.

For real, I wouldn't have bought the game in February if people hadn't been singing its' praises. And then the professional-looking roadmap came out, which is the sort of thing that a company with decent leadership and a good vision for the future makes...but it was all smoke and mirrors.
People need to quit this shit and need to stop supporting CA until core leadership changes. The company is going to continue to treat its' products like trash and its' consumers like subhumans until the managers with these sociopathic tendencies get thrown out on their ass. There should be a video that comes out with every DLC that reminds people of the issues the company has had, it should be naming the people who are causing it, and it should explain the patterns that we're likely to see in the future due to those people. People need to be outraged and demanding NAMES, out for BLOOD (politically-speaking) and essentially digitally protesting until bad actors are forced to step down and be replaced by reputable industry names or fellow CA coworkers with much better plans for the company.

the real cash grab that CA is wasting resources on is Hyenas, but I'm starting to increasingly believe the theories I've seen going around that Hyenas was basically forced onto CA by Sega without CA having much say of their own on the matter.

It's not a matter of love or passion, it's about upper management realising they can squeeze more money out of it.
There isn't going to be a TWW4, any good will they leave on the table isn't going to help sell the next game (it's not like Warhammer fans are going to start playing historical once Warhammer ends, or like historical fans will have any alternatives). Any good will they leave on the table is a wasted resource, it's free money that they aren't cashing in.
There's a lot of love, passion and talent that's going into the game, but it has to contend with the business-side of the company that demands infinite growth.

What this really is, and what it is 90% of the time a company sees a drop in product quality, is that talented employees are leaving. There are actually various leaks coming out nowadays.
The entire development side of things in CA is horrifying.
      They lost their old devs.
What's the problem with losing old devs? There isn't any f*cking documentation.
Without documentations it'll take *months* for new devs to even understand the code not to mention get up to speed.
      That's why patches became slow.
Also, apparently CA as a big company doesn't have automated testing and has been using old codebases/engines for multiple games.
Meaning, that devs are afraid to touch the code in case they break something(and break several games).
They are basically getting by only using band-aid to fix bugs(the problems get bigger in the long term).
And on top of all that, management wants them to produce new stuff and are pressuring things.
If the old devs stayed maybe things wouldn't have been so bad.
I think I heard that SEGA is planning to step forward and do something about the management but I guess we'll see.
Overall, Warhammer which used to be great(if not greatest) *for CA* is royally f*cked(by the time they fix internal stuff).

These are companies that horribly abuse their consumers and they get away with it because your average gamer isn't thinking too hard about how much they're being ripped off. But with games like what Creative Assembly put out that in comparison have a much smaller audience, these people are paying attention to the games state and what the company behind it is doing and charging for it.

That being said this game would massively benefit from a custodian team. Look at paradox with Stellaris. They have 2 teams. They have a dlc team and a custodian team. The dlc teams makes new dlcs like every 4 months. In between those 4 months there custodian will do one or 2 patches. In those patches they add new content to all the previous dlcs to increase their value. Last patch they fixed 3 previous dlcs by increasing the content in them by like 30% each.

Paradoxically, I *still* trust CA more than I trust paradox. I was a starting player of Stellaris, loved it at launch. I was one of the core that carried the game to commercial success. Then they released 2 (IMO) stupid updates that destroyed the experience they have built, and most of the OG playerbase left. Yet that didn't matter, as their revenue allowed them to shoot ads and trailers and stuff.
Then I tried other Paradox games, and was similarly let down. There has honestly not been one game from them that I can say I enjoy and it's worth the total money.
That said, the custodian team would be a great idea for CA. TWW is their biggest ship, and it's in their best interest to keep it sailing for as long as possible.

@@SpookyScarySkeletor Most notably, it was the removal of tiles, and strategic resources. I loved the concept of all these various resources you can collect. Then it got condensed into bland advanced resources.
The tile system was another thing I enjoyed immensely. It gave the player perfect control over how to build the planet. I enjoyed making my planets as effective as possible with adjacent bonuses and stuff. Pop planning and robot building was also incredibly easy, as you could just build up the infrastructure and drag n drop pops where you want them. They scrapped all of that for a whacky job system, forcing us to use an AI that can't even do its job properly. The legit most annoying thing about that entire chain of updates was how I spent most of my time fighting against the job AI, because it can't fathom the fact I want my mining robots in the mines, and not in the farms.
They claimed to have made that change in an effort to fight endgame lag, but as it has been proven, the new system hasn't helped with that in the slightest. The game was still unplayable at a certain point in late game. The issue lies with the outdated engine, but they can't admit that, because that'd force them to make stellaris 2 instead of milking the player base dry for a trillion DLC's.
What makes me mad the most, is that no other 4X I played comes even close to Stellaris. It was the best game of its kind that I played, and Paradox ruined it.
That said, there still have been many updates over the years that were greatly anticipated, and new mechanics that I enjoyed playing with, but considering most of my time was spent fighting with the job AI, it just wasn't fun anymore. They changed a running system, and lost their original fans for it.

Imo, this is exactly the real problem facing tww3 right now. You need to give new players some affordable option to catch up. If there is any pricing crisis or problem right now, it's the fact that if you want to play IE with all of the past DLCs you have to get an extra mortgage. So what that the new DLC costs more? It amounts to, what, like 2 cups of overpriced coffee -- that isn't worth all of the hype about the price hike. Imo, some content creators did a huge disservice to everyone by focusing on the price increase issue. An issue, okay. But I want content focused on the game, what's good about it or not. I have thousands of hours into tww2 and tww3 combined, but hadn't played the game at all for months, until I saw Ostankya IE campaigns. It looks really cool. Sure it's a little bit more expensive, but as an old Dad, I have other stuff to stress about. I've been playing the DLC a ton and it's fun, for me. All of the talk and drama about the price is ginned up mob hype at it's worst. It might be good for a few people while that hype builds up, but it's bad for the future lifespan of the game, for the other content curators who have to deal with lower engagement, and also for the prospects of relying on new DLC content to make revenue goals (instead of continuing to charge an arm and a leg for all of the old stuff, which hinders new play entry).

Large companies don't really have "pride of ownership" of their titles at a high level. Individual devs might, but if you don't have managerial/financial support to pursue spending more time polishing things it won't really happen.
I feel like we have encouraged this outcome over time because so many people, myself included had so much goodwill built up from WH2 that we simped and gobbled down any paid DLC regardless of some lingering issues even in WH2. It’s insane to me how Paradox suddenly became “consumer friendly”, lol c’mon dude, their DLCs are obnoxious, kinda reminds The Sims in a way. These games are being treated as “game as a service” even before this gimmick was properly introduced in the industry. I honestly despise everything related with this bullshit, the DLC, the pre-purchase that unlock stuff, etc.. paywalls of any kind, they are not reasonable. You already paid the full price, the product should arrive complete.
In earlier generations when we had proper expansions, like Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne for example, that’s fair, a big update who charges a reasonable amount of money. But micro updates who are too expensive, if you buy a couple of them, you spent $60 again, that’s just not right, there’s no “custodian team” who could justify this nonsense. Only the devs and publishers are beneficiated with this approach, the industry noticed how videogames are inherently addictive in nature, they are taking full advantage now. There’s no regulations whatsoever, so anything goes. You will not stop playing TW Warhammer, I know, everybody here knows, CA will keep enticing the playerbase to buy more micro content, milking this game the best they can with minimum effort. And if they announce a “custodian team” or whatever the hell, suddenly they will look “consumer friendly”, lol This videogame hobby is getting more unreasonable as the time goes by, I think I will step away from it eventually. $70 is becoming the norm, DLCs everywhere, Denuvo DRM tanking the performance, low quality in general… ever since the NES recovered this industry back in the 80s, I think the current situation of “gaming” reached the rock bottom

Another shout out for a smaller studio doing better than "industry standard": Aliens Dark Descent by Tindalos (Battlefleet Gothic Armada I & II). It not only released at $40 (which I thought was pretty fair), they also released two major patches and one minor patch within the first 6 weeks after release. The overall quality of the game is fantastic; it perfectly recreates the spooky, unnerving moments of the movie Aliens when things are quiet, and when shit hits the fan it really gets your blood pumping as your squad desperately mows down waves of those filthy xenos.
If that game had been released by CA or some other "AAA" company, it would released at $60, maybe received one major patch within the first two months, left many annoying bugs in place months later, and would have certainly been a less engaging game with worse mechanics and lazy level design.

When I was starting out in the industry, Assassin's Creed set a new standard. It was over: nobody could make games like Assassin's Creed, there was too much budget behind it, that was going to be the future, everybody had to consolidate, blah blah blah. For my experience, it's because the campaign has to stay at high tempo and never has any real lulls or manoeuvring. Everyone around you will declare war eventually, sitting around and defending is pointless, so you just have to blitz through campaigns in much the same way every time.
On the battles front, sieges still suck, settlement battles are tedious, and open field battles all play basically the same way, and the arcadey nature of the fighting removes a lot of the nuance to combat, and the pace is too damn high. Why offer an hour timer when most battles are over in 5 minutes?
I think the effort to reach wider audiences has encouraged CA to remove a lot of the deliberate, slow paced strategy from their games and it means everything has to speed along at a consistent drumbeat, and all the complexity and dynamism gets stripped back.

This is frankly a dumb way to look at it. As legend said in the video total warhammer 1 2 and 3 are essentially the same game.
You don't have 500 hours on tw3 and 500+ hours on tw2. You have all of that combined together.
Your 500+ hours in 2 are when you had less time spent in the game. When you moved to 3 that didn't go away. You instead have 501 hours after your just first hour in 3.
There are nearly 100 playable lords in 3, but if you've religiously played 2, MOST of those lords you have already played and won't be changed in a meaningful way to get something new out of it in 3. It's no wonder you found less todo in warhammer 3 compared to 2. Because you already played it in 2 dude.
Essentially thinking the games and their hours played are unconnected is a huge blind spot in your analysis.

It may be due to my experience with other live service games, but at least in Destiny 2 it can take 18 months or more before any kind of reasonable correction. Chances are Thrones of decay is going to be of similar quality to and price to the current expansion and the earliest we might be able to see any kind of reasonable correction would be the third announced DLC, may be.

I'd wager it has something to do with the factions' playerbase, cathay tzeentch and kislev are probably on the lower end of the spectrum. Dwarfs and the empire are up next and not even factoring in nurgle it will probably be one of the best selling dlc's in a while despite probably having the same price tag as shadow's of change.

The base game, Warhammer 3, is a good game, but the price of DLC is ridiculous.
There are a few mods I want to be compatible with SFO, and integration is stalling.

For example, one of the launch factions for Warhammer 3 that I am actually interested in playing Khorne, looking at the roster, half of it is purple, requiring the third highest price DLC (also what's up with Chaos Dwarves costing three times as much as Orge Kingdoms), and one unit requires a creative assembly account (what happened to the truly "free" dlc).

I think the SoC DLC coming out around the same time as the Early Access of Starfield, was probably an additional factor as to why the sales on this DLC also didn't do as well. Maybe if CA pushed the DLC release a couple more weeks out in mid-September, its possible it might have done a bit better.

    • @filthyshoggoth
      @filthyshoggoth Před 8 měsíci

I mean maybe you could say that, but one is a full game RPG, and the other is a DLC for a long running RTS.
I would have bought SoC on pre-order, as I did every DLC for TWWH...If it wasn't a fucking rip-off.
Starfield has nothing to do with it, aside from it is coincidentally what I'm playing instead of SoC. (But I'd be playing Starfield anyway, and SoC would be sitting unused until I finish that and then BG3, which I haven't even purchased yet.)
Again, I doubt Starfield made much difference for fans of both.

His friend is a business major but “loves” the gaming industry because of how lucrative the monetization is! This person is the type of guy taking up managerial and executive positions. He knows nothing about the companies he is part of in terms of gaming. He is simply there to make money. After a pause I came back to Warhammer 3 two days ago, playing my Cathay campaign. Got a bit confused by the changes to Yin/Yang on the campaign map (wait, I can research without constantly worrying about balance now? Nice, though the constant balancing act kind of felt like the point), but things seemed fine. Being able to switch the Yin/Yang buildings without destroying them seems cool.
Eventually one of my lords leveled up - a Magistrate. Oh hey, a new skill tree! And... er... he's level 28... but has only two skill points allocated and the one I just got?
    Respec mod didn't help.
I also found an item and got a question mark portrait and glitched character name as a recipient.
