I used to work there in the mid 1970's with Mr Appleyard and Paul Goldthorpe and a Salvation Army guy called Gylnn.

@@onlyonelonelygamer74 3:05 the gentleman in the middle, Cliff Stockdale, he worked there from 1918-1971. Started at 14 and retired at 67, he was the rope walk foreman for many years. The rope they are standing against, was the largest they made, during the World War II he was a Sergeant in the Home Guard, he couldn't join the forces as his job, was a essential to the War Effort. He was described as a kind man, who would look out for workers. He met my grandma, while working at Ropery. At the time, she was married, her husband was later killed in Italy, my grandma often spoke about how he would turn up during an air raid and help get her to safely.

My uncle ,Albert Raymond Lawrence ,worked there in the 40s . He was 19 when he died in an accident at the Ropery , in February 1943. I have been told there was a ‘flare back’ and he as severely burned .

How tragic! I imagine health and safety was pretty lax back then!
