  • Here is a compilation of quintessential American-built logging railroad steam locomotives. When I think of engines for logging railways, I think of three engine types: Shay, Climax and Heisler. All three engines are designed to be slow but durable on sharp radius curves and have a tremendous tractive effort for heavy trains on, typically, mountainous track. Featured prominently is the Cass Scenic Railroad in Wester Virginia; a perfect setting for a logging rail operation. Hope you enjoy!

Legends of American locomotive power! It was these engines that helped us expand west

I remember that in mexico only 2 shay locomotives we're built by Lima in 1887.
All of the shays we're preserved.

Cass Scenic Railroad in Cass WV boasts the largest amount of Operating Shay locomotives. And I like ‘em. They also recently restored a Class B or C Climax. Then there’s Heisler 6. Right now Heisler 6 is working on another railroad called the Durbin and Greenbrier Railroad. She’s filling in for Durbins primary power Climax 3. There’s also a track 99% complete between Cass and Durbin after a flood. I can’t wait to see train’s traveling riverside between Durbin and Cass WV. And I gotta ride the Cass Scenic Railroad up to Bald Knob. Happy Railroading Walt’s Nephew.🚂

There's something about a rail line that traverses parallel to a water formation that seems absolutely magical

Wow I've always been fascinated by logging trains. And I once went to Cass back in 2008. Love those logging locomotives

Vancouver Islander here, I LOVE Shays! I got to work on the YD-250 Navy crane barge, all steam powered! I helped rebuild 4 Tyee engines on that. They were basically steam donkeys on a boat!

How wonderful! I know steam logging equipment is demonstrated sometimes today but never for actual logging purposes

  • @wallystrainsandcoincollect5750

Wow A lot of power pulling that first train
