  • In this episode of the Scrap Metal Replica I show two ways of forging of the replica of the Viking age archaeological find from Poland. As usual I to forge it use materials I found on scrap yards.

You make forge welding look so easy!

Not discrediting anyone, because forge welding is a skill in its own. But once you get the hang of it, it turns into an almost every day occurrence at the forge. I used to hate forge welding but after two sessions with Roy Adams @ christcenteredironworks, I love forge welding. Its a piece of cake. Sure some steels are finicky, but its all the same concept and super satisfying.

Цікаве й інформативне відео. Особливо стосовно корозії і швів, тепер буду уважніше придивлятися до виробів!

Outstanding work!! Loved the type Z Viking sword you did awhile back! Was curious what the billet size was once you wrapped the edge bar around the core?

    Great work as always!
Can you please tell me pros and cons of both types as if we were two warriors, discussing our tools? Which type is stronger? Which will serve longer and be less prone to delamination? Which one is going to be more affordable?
Or, with certain skill level on the side of a blacksmith, differences in construction become negligible?

I absolutely love your blades, including the spearheads. I'm thinking about eventually doing a Damascus blade myself, but I was wondering if I could use 1075 and 1084 together to make a Damascus blade with good patterns. Or are those two steels to similar to be able to make any visible pattern when being used together?

i don't use these steel so i don't know what pattern it gives. Make a small sample and than check.

Oooh, these ones! To me they look a little later evolution of the Lunow type. I have to try forging one of those one day. I saw the cracking on the second one's poll, what a shame. :( Though that's a risk of working with this material, ey?

It’d probably still be good to use, honestly. Many of these old iron axes and even swords had weld flaws/cracks and were seemingly still used.

wrought iron is hard to forge because it delaminate and crack very often.
