  • Theologian Russell Moore is one of the most influential figures in evangelical Christianity today, but back in May he sent shockwaves through his community after resigning his leadership in the Southern Baptist Convention. A leaked letter alleging “raw racist sentiment” was one of the many damning reasons he walked away, and he speaks with Michel Martin about the Church and these troubling issues.

My Father was an Evangelical Baptist minister who was abusive and an anti-woman. He became a minister to hide behind his collar and have power and control over his family and congregation. No one would question his intentions, nor would anyone voice their concern about his wife and kids. We had abusive congregants too. People go to church flawed or broken, but ignoring the message makes me mad! I follow the teaching of Christ “Love one another!” My Father and these congregants are missing love. I applaud this leader in making a change, sticking to his morals and values, even when it includes walking away. I walked away from my family to save myself.

We respect authority but not when it runs counter to Christ’s love and commands. Walking away from toxic, abusive relationships is honouring the Lord. I am deeply sorry to read your short-testimony of family and religious abuse. May one always look to the Lord even when man’s evil seems to prevail. Thank you for sharing.

I am so sorry you had to go through all this. My hat’s off to you, especially if you were able to retain some semblance of faith afterwards.
I had a 1 1/2 year long unpleasant experience with Fundies as a teenager, but it was nothing compared to yours. And yet, I continue to harbor mis-trust and an overall dislike of these people.
I was a Presbyterian Yankee in a southern evangelical church, so I had a big problem with their walloping misogyny, their persistent efforts to manipulate me and an overall creep factor that went to 11. 😵
One day during a particularly long and misogynistic sermon, I got up, walked out and never came back. Quite ballsy for a 15 year old!

Having sat on a pastor search committee in a SBC years ago, I can attest to the absolute hard-headedness of some baptists. There is a core of baptists that treat their church like their own personal fiefdom. And they are immovable and unreachable. It was personally painful to realize that these folks I had looked up to all my life were just so petty. It poisoned me on the church.

Y'all made the grape Kool-aid and the brethren spiked it for everyone. Funny how the great leadership just quit. And that too would have not been news, if his leaked letter hadn't let the stench of the SBC barn waft out the door before it hit his behind. Now he is on "TV" pretending he smells like rose.

I was a member of the SBC for a decade. From day one, at a Bible study, I sat and just observed. At the end of the night, they had to pick out a new study to start, they asked me if I had any ideas. I said, I'm not coming back, because, I'm looking for a group of Christians who want to look inside their hearts, apply the Bible, and change what God is leading us to change. I'm not looking for a group who wants to spend 2 hours talking about how Sinful the non-believers are and how we are in the end times and we need to call out all the horrible Democrats, Homosexuals and Transgenders. The response was, surprisingly receptive, and they asked me if I wanted to lead the next 6 week coarse. I said, "I have a very good book and workbook we could go through by Jerry Bridges, called, "Respectable Sins" a look at some of the "Respectable Sins" IN OUR OWN LIVES, that we so easily overlook because we are to consumed with the sins of the non-believing world, (Who by the way don't have the Holy Spirit to guide them.) At first this was really helping change the hearts of many in the church....or so I thought. Then Barrack Obama was elected and that was just too much. I spent years quoting scripture and begging my Brothers and Sisters to Love the World and not condemn them. Then Donald Trump came on the scene and they were all drawn to him like moths to a flame. I found myself fighting a losing battle. After the Jan.6th act of treason, and my church refusing to believe the Corona Virus wasn't a Democratic Hoax and refusing to wear masks, or help in any way to rid the world of this plague and defending DT no matter what he did, I finally resigned after many tears and depression of which I still deal with. I'm saddened at where the Church in America is today.

Please understand how I thank God in my prayers when filthy USA illiterates, TV viewers, soldiers, racists, junkies and predators (so many kinds) commit suicide, get raped and overdose. My good will is reserved for people who read together in groups and put written wisdom into action. There are many varieties, from engineering books to cookbooks to law books to doctoring books to religious books. There are more kinds of books. They are not "What That" books. They are How-To books. See? They are Recipes, not Restaurant Reviews. They are not transcripts of video tapes. Go read St Augustine on allegorical hermeneutics if you care. But in any case, so many useful books are shared by groups to guide their group actions. How was Scripture useful to me? Well, my American Indian Christian grandmother (married my Christian grandpa Howard) took me to their Yankee race mixing peacenik church, taught me to read, and taught me to detest racist sinners and mercenary sinners. Let's see how that panned out! Later in college, with Harvard Unitarians (mostly - I also worked for them) and millions of Christians (mostly) globally, I helped Bishop Desmond Tutu destroy a racist government 1/2 a world away and burn white racist South African civilian sinners alive in fires. Screaming their last screams. IRL. No just saying. We brought hell fires down up earth! Praise the Lord! Then Anglicans made Bishop Tutu into Archbishop Tutu! Anglicans! Not just for empire anymore? Right? LOL. Are you still reading? We do not share any "team America" or "team west." I went to Harvard, but we do not share "team college grad." Understand me? I bet you do now. I wrote engineering specifications, so we don't likely use many English words the same ways. I pray that African Christians organize to burn more racist imperial bodies alive screaming. Is that clear now? Scripture is "true" like arrows "fly true." Alethiea is one of those complicated Greek words that doesn't quite translate into "True." Scripture does not have to "be true" in the manner of "We burned racist sinners alive screaming" is very true. LOL. See now? I bet you see and hear very clearly now. I want you on your knees praising God for the recent Taliban victory over loser USA imperialist soldiers. RIGHT NOW. See God's infinite mercy? I bet you do! I love those Muslim brothers and Sisters! Maybe nothing I say can save you from hell fires. I don't know. What do you think? Do you think at all? I recommend that you QUOTE SCRIPTURE RIGHT NOW OR SHUT YOUR USELESS WHINY MOUTH. I was schooled right quick in the racial prejudice that exists in the church, and my dad paid for my misunderstanding until he died there 6yrs later. @@ronaldharding3927 I was involved, due to my mother primarily, in speaking in tongues evangelical groups. I had a pastor from one church telling dirty jokes when away from the rest of the members of the church. At another rather larger church, from the Assemblies of God, the pastor was caught mating with women in the church that were not his wife. That got him a quick divorce and a quick defrocking, but for years that had been going on.
When we feel on hard times due to my father's health failing, the American Christians did essentially nothing to help. They would come over to pray and then go on their merry way. In the end it was not so well off non-Christian Americans who helped us the most.
I had one pastor and my mother try to convince me to vote for Reagan a second time, which by law no pastor is supposed to do that. And I had realized that the very 'Christian' Reagan was really nothing of the sort. Later on it turned out that miss "Just Say No" Nancy was busy consulting an astrologer. From Grunge...
"As The New York Times remembered in 2018, Ronald Reagan, former Hollywood actor and former governor of California, was an unlikely choice for white evangelicals when he won the presidency over Jimmy Carter - a self-described born-again Sunday school teacher - in 1980. Reagan's anti-Communist and limited government ideals successfully eclipsed the fact that he was "twice-married, alienated from his children, [and] almost never attended church." Even so, it might come as a surprise to learn that Ronald and his second wife, Nancy, made many decisions after consulting not an all-powerful, all-knowing God, but rather the messages hidden in the stars overhead.
      Read More: www.grunge.com/254331/why-nancy-reagan-became-obsessed-with-astrology/?
I still respect Carter. I do not Ronald Reagan nor Nancy nor most of his administration.
      From Wikipedia...
"The presidency of Ronald Reagan in the United States was marked by numerous scandals, resulting in the investigation, indictment, or conviction of over 138 administration officials, the largest number for any president in American history."
My guess is that Trump's administration will wind up breaking that record. Another fake Christian that the evangelicals overwhelmingly supported. It seems that what the majority of evangelicals want these days is power. Something they accuse others of desiring.
From Acts 15:28, 29 we have the following:
28 - "It is the decision of the holy Spirit and of us not to place on you any burden beyond these necessities,
29 - namely, to abstain from meat sacrificed to idols, from blood, from meats of strangled animals, and from unlawful marriage. If you keep free of these, you will be doing what is right. Farewell."
So abstain from meats sacrificed to idols (not really an issue these days), from blood (Yep, not a problem), from meats of strangled animals (not the way animals are slaughtered these days, so another non-issue), and from unlawful marriage. (Not a problem.) Pretty easy to follow that set of rules. Glad that is done.
When I finally gave up on Christianity I felt a huge weight lift off my shoulders. I didn't have to worry about having a lack of faith.
So you believe whatever you want to. I'm not going to believe in the triune god anymore. (3 in 1, sort of like the oil I have in my garage.)
I am returning to the UK where Christianity is not so powerful and where I actually respect the Christians there as they are far more likely to follow the Beatitudes then the majority of American Christians. And I can talk with them without them trying to convert me to anything.

Many of these churches appear to have lost humanity. If life is so important like an unborn fetus, then why not get vaccinated? If not for one's own sake but for thy neighbor. The separation of church and state no longer exists. Having survived my premature birth and its medical challenges throughout my life is my relationship with God up until this very minute. This past 6 years is further confirmation especially the last year. Brain surgery and seizure kidney disease, a transplant, heart attack and bypass surgery all have been my journey. With a private last rites between me and a reverend. Music and God were my mental and spiritual strength along with prayers from friends, family, and people I've met over the years. Faith in God's gift of medicine and science, because He guided the minds and hands of the doctors during surgery. Two songs that summarize all of this are "Don't Give Up" by Peter Gabriel w/Kate Bush and Sir Elton John's "I'm Still Standing".

I was in the evangelical movement when it was first becoming popular in the Deep South. I was just starting high school. I was taught the love and compassion of Jesus. His deep moral soul. This was early 1970’s. The focus was changing to numbers. Like a corporation pushing to reach its sales quota. They wanted year over year growth. They were not interested in helping those who truly needed it. They only “helped” if it benefitted them, no different than an oil company commercial saying how much they are doing for the “environment”. Yes, the majority of the congregation were systemic racists. It is still the same as ever today. But the churches are like major companies selling a product. It is a church where you can go and not feel guilty about being racist, greedy, political, judgmental, cruel, violent against “Gods enemies”, anti science and arrogant. But the church leaders knew this many decades ago. This is how you get more people. You make them feel good, you don’t challenge them and you get more MONEY! I watched it morph into this for the last 40 years! I miss the churches that had sincerely compassionate people who wanted to be good to each other and find ways to help those in the most need no matter who they were. Sometimes it was my family. I miss the beautiful and deeply spiritual music. I miss the messages that challenged us to be true to our morals and ethics and always lead people to God and let Him do the rest and not to humans trying to SELL them! And to strive to be like Jesus with loving hearts, respectful, compassionate, sincere, unselfish and always kind. Who does that anymore?

First of all, tax-exempt organizations are held accountable to their status and are required to file 990 forms with the IRS every year. Secondly, all pastors and others paid salaries do pay personal income taxes on all they receive. There is a lot of misunderstanding around this issue. Churches and charities are not taxed on donations, because it is not income. The 7% figure you give is simply false. There are some crooked organizations, but most Christian organizations do what they claim. By the way, as the leader of a Christian nonprofit, I do not even get matching social security and Medicare contributions from my employer (board driven nonprofit). There is no unemployment insurance either, unlike most workers doing secular jobs. Tax laws are complicated and need reform, but the system set up for churches was meant to be fair and promote charities and other public good. The vast majority of pastors are in small churches and not well paid. It is mostly sacrificial service. I cannot speak for other religions.

I found this very refreshing as well, and I am a Christian. I became outraged when a well-known pastor here in Southern California actually said that only true Christians can vote for the man Trump. I became even more dismayed when I learned that several folks in my church did vote for the man Trump solely because he said the right words. I have watched with horror when I’ve seen men who call themselves pastors scream to their church members to not wear masks and to not get vaccinated. I have been appalled, and continue to be appalled, when I have learned several men who call themselves pastors were among those who breached the U.S. Capitol on January 6th. Yet, Michael, Christ calls me to pray for them, to pray the Lord will change their hearts, and to pray He will change my heart. It hurts me to see these examples of outrageous and sinful behavior from those who say they are Christian, and others, such as yourself, would be right to ask if they are truly Christian at all. The Lord Jesus came and caused a revolution among the Jews and non-Jews of His time. Mostly, if you do read the Gospel accounts, they were jealous of Jesus, and had murderous intent against Him. Down through the ages, nothing has changed, when a dedicated and devoted few go up against the established religion of the day. As for myself, I returned books I had received from that pastor I mentioned earlier, and I included a long letter letting him know, very respectfully, why I was doing so. I must say Michael, that I did keep two bibles which had been very helpful to me over the years to help me understand difficult passages. I’m saddened by all that’s going on in American churches, I pray the Lord will change many hearts, that many who call themselves Christian will truly embody it, and that many will repent from this type of evil divisiveness. If you ever get a chance e to read any of the Old Testament, you will see how many times the Israelites sinned against the Lord, and He, speaking through the prophets, bared His heart and expressed how much their actions hurt Him. It’s heartbreaking. Sorry for rambling for so long, I just wanted to share with you how distressing all this has been. Ultimately, though, I trust the Lord is in complete control, He loves us all, including the one who is far from Him, and wants us all to enjoy Him forever. In the meantime, we all have some serious decisions to make, which way we will follow, I am including myself. Greetings to you, and if I may say, may God richly bless you.

My dear husband shares these same concerns as I do about the state of many of our churches. When we stray from the purity and simplicity of the Gospel, we get what we’re seeing now happening across this country. I will keep praying that the Lord open many eyes and hearts and turn back to Him. It’s now 7:20 a.m. over here in Southern California.

Get your word from the Word. Not from man. Religions all FALL SHORT ... Jesus says all that needs saying. No COMPROMISE. I trust no man. "...put your trust in no man for he will always let you down but put your trust in God for he will never let you down..."

I'm an ex-Southern Baptist. This gentleman has been a lone voice of faith with integrity in the denomination for years. I have a great deal of respect for him despite our theological differences. It wouldn't surprise me if he were to be forced out of the denomination altogether at some point. I'm actually surprised it hasn't happened already.

Thousands of Religions in the world and they all 'believe': Only They are the True Chosen Ones. They are not ready 'To Know' the truth and would deny it anyways.

Still a bunch of believers though. That's OK, they can't help themselves. I'll wait.

I've heard so many people say, "But that's not Christianity..." But if you asked an SBC member they would give you a version of Christianity that they believe in heart and soul. So who is right? When the Crusaders took Jerusalem they slaughtered all the inhabitants. But they were true believers. And you yourself, Mr Nobody, insinuated that you know "the truth."

@@gregwhite8832 true christianity is to love doing right show kindness and love and walk humbly with God through christ. Showing compassion yet hating evil. Example you hate the heroin but show compassion to the addict.
