I really love this song, it’s a classic! The Brothers Johnson were hit makers in the 70s and 80s! I also loved their songs, “Stomp, I’ll Be Good To You, Get The Funk Out Of My Face, and more”! I was a kid back then but my older sisters had their albums! They were very talented musicians! ❤️❤️

Brothers Johnson (or, The Brothers Johnson) This indeed was a cover song, originally written by Johnnie (Shuggie) Otis Jr, when Shuggie was 17 (1971). Conceptually, it was about two young people who wrote love letters back and forth 22 times, and I believe they numbered their letters Strawberry letter 1, Strawberry letter 2, etc, etc. "Strawberry letter 22" is mentioned in the song, because the song, which Shuggie wrote to his girlfriend, is his reply letter, thus the song is titled "Strawberry letter 23" and as you do in any chain letter, you usually respond by mentioning things from the previous letter, in this case, Strawberry letter 22. The song doesn't really have a lot of meaningful dialogue. Just simple innocent young love, with a whole lot of imagery. It's not about lust and sex, it's about beautiful scenes "Rainbows and waterfalls run through my mind." He wanted her to be his girlfriend, so he was trying to write poetic things to impress her. The imagery was about what strawberry letter 22 invoked. Now, accordingly to what I heard, The Brothers Johnson, were younger cousins of Shuggie, and were going through his attic when they came across his song(s). The melody was rather simplistic, so the Brother's Johnson, with permission, added more funk to it, but left the lyrics primarily intact. Originally, Shuggie didn't get the song to be published, or if it did, it didn't chart at all.
Leon Shuggie was a guitar virtuoso, Quincy basically left the arrangement alone, I have the original recording and it was played on an acoustic guitar. If I remember correctly, I think Quincy brought Eric Clapton in to studio to play that guitar tremolo because George couldn’t play it.
The only thing I can think of is that she sprayed some sort of strawberry sent on the letters she wrote. Like in da movies. The WWII sweetheart sprays some perfume on the letter and puts it in the envelope and the soldier opens it up in Germany and smells it.
8th grade. Took me back. 😀 I was listening to this song over and over until I got those lyrics down. I sat by my radio with my cassette recorder waiting for it to come on so I could record it off the radio. Good times.
Back in the 70's the beautiful thing about the music/lyrics, they could literally have countless meanings/interpretations all unique to the listener! My middle school music teacher was amazing. She would have us listen to popular rock/funk music and give our interpretations. There were 25 students and 25 different interpretations all of which made perfect sense! There was true talent back then, and something that's almost impossible to find now. I miss the true artists of yesterday!

Where was I when this song came out? Usually traveling to Delaware to visit my brother while he was in the Air Force. My dad was driving and he liked the song too! My dad and I were usually building (or rebuilding, and rebuilding, and...) an engine for my brother's car. For some reason, this song came out in heavy rotation, and I wasn't complaining. It's just a good grooving song to listen to.

This was mid seventies. I was a freshman in college. Some friends and I went to a concert with Earth, Wind and Fire. Brothers Johnson was one of the back up bands. Also backing up EWF were the Blackbirds. My son, who is 33, loves this song, and will play it and Heatwave's "Always and Forever" over and over.
Back in the mid 1980's before internet... my brain for some reason remembered this song...and I could not think of who sang it...and in asking just about everyone I knew if they remembered I could Not find out. I went to the library trying to find song charts from the 1970s lol...because it started to drive me nuts - but my itty bitty library didn't have any books like that. No one at our local radio station recalled it either...but then the 2 disk jockeys we had mostly played country western music or hit parade type songs. About 6 months later.. I was in a 2nd hand store and saw a some cassette tapes show casing songs from 1971 or 1972...and there it was on one of those cassettes ( I can't remember which one...but I bought both of them. I was so happy at last the mystery was solved - I literally had an ear worm for 6 months with that song and also in no one else remembering it...like I said it was driving me nuts. Man MRM your taking me back, memories of elementary school!!! I remember this song well, it was the first time I learned how to be in a chrous group. Also the fact that my music teacher could play it on piano left a big impression on me. Also to further the memory my cousin picked out the Bass part by ear. It was 1977 and life was simple back then even though a lot of people don't realize this is a cover of a song by *Shuggie Otis* want to talk about a different feel!!! One time I was driving through rural Texas on my way to see a friend in Houston, and stopped off to eat at this restaurant literally in the middle of nowhere. From what I know is his GF used to write him a lot of love letters on strawberry scented paper after letter number 22 he decided too write this song in hopes of love letter 23. As for the words to the song, it all a 1960s acid trip,

I haven't heard this in decades. It is great to hear it again. It's like a soft pillow. Just relax and let it do its thing. This is a song that could be 3 times as long and I wouldn't tire of that groove. As good as this is, I've always been partial to their 'I'll Be Good To You'. That one brings tears to my eyes for some reason. I don't know why.

I was in a 2nd hand store and saw a some cassette tapes show casing songs from 1971 or 1972...and there it was on one of those cassettes ( I can't remember which one...but I bought both of them. I was so happy at last the mystery was solved - I literally had an ear worm for 6 months with that song and also in no one else remembering it...like I said it was driving me nuts.

Called The Brothers Johnson,,song came out in 1977..they did not write the song, it was written by Shuggie Otis..I was just almost one year out of high school. The song is about a wedding. Louis Johnson sadly passed away in 2015.

I was in the 4th or 5th grade, heard it on the radio all the time. A girl in my class named Daniel Johnson brought the album to class for show and tell, but I never put the group/ brothers and the music together until years later watching CZcams videos. And then part of the 70’s just came rushing back into my head...lol

Man! I remember scrounging money for bus fair and head to the skate rink,they knew to play this song several times when I was there,70s had the best music,wish everyone could experience that time.
I wore that album out! That’s not the extended version. This version cut the instrumental section. The song was about two people in love sending letters to each other strawberry letter 23, 22, 21. I was in high school when this song received a lot of airplay. The brother in tan was a pastor, I think. I heard he passed. My sister always knew all the words to songs. I’d be singing them wrong for years. I would forget to read the lyrics on the album. One other song I loved on the Right On Time album was “Never Leave You Lonely” You’ve got to review it!!! Little history on this song. Written and performed by Shuggie Otis, which is johnny Otis son. Shuggie played every instrument on the album and he was only 18 years old.
Man MRM your taking me back, memories of elementary school!!! I remember this song well, it was the first time I learned how to be in a chrous group. Also the fact that my music teacher could play it on piano left a big impression on me. Also to further the memory my cousin picked out the Bass part by ear. It was 1977 and life was simple back then even though a lot of people don't realize this is a cover of a song by *Shuggie Otis* want to talk about a different feel!!! I haven't heard this in decades. It is great to hear it again. It's like a soft pillow. Just relax and let it do its thing. This is a song that could be 3 times as long and I wouldn't tire of that groove. As good as this is, I've always been partial to their 'I'll Be Good To You'.
