- US Navy produced short stars Joel Fluellen as a draftee from his civilian job at a black newspaper through boot camp and an assignment in the Pacific. Completed after the surrender of Japan, the film celebrates the teamwork, diversity, and the actions of several distinguished African American sailors. The film was restored by the National Archives in 2016.

@@kimjohnson8471 It was strange times back in those days. Growing up in Louisiana we faced extreme prejudice during the 1960s. I started my sophomore year in high school in September of 1970 so I grew up in the 1960s. By my 8th birthday in September 1963, I decided that I wanted to leave the USA and live in other countries. When I became 18 I saw my only way to see other countries was to join the Navy. My first 16 months in the Navy was the last 16 months of the Viet Nam war and as a veteran of that era, we received good educational benefits and many other benefits. I visited 12 countries during my Navy time and because I was in the navigation department, I learned a valuable skill that was very high paying. Since my sailor days ended, I have visited 15 more countries and I have spent at least 6000 days outside of the USA. I left the USA in July 2003 and I speak another language and I have another citizenship. If I didn’t join the Navy, I don’t think that I would have spent even one day outside of the USA.

@@WestPhillyNative215 Congratulations on your Naval career. Navigation was still a challenge back in those days. Nowadays, it’s too easy and completely computerized.
My dad was in the Navy in the 1950s. They recruited him out of White Castle, Louisiana. They lied to him and told him that they could help his baseball career progress...

At least the government tried to give some respect to the Negro during the war. This may have been done after the war since the induction and training seemed to be integrated, which it was not in WW II. These films are historic. Glad that you were able to find and post them.

Excellent film, wish there were more like this. Black and white and all have been working together and the racism almost died out till it was resurrected again with the division starting in 2008. Very sad. Those who deny this deny the truth for political or racial purpose.

Why would ANY Black serve this or any branch? Ever? Gtfoh.
Why you ask? Well let’s look at what was going on at the time.
If Germany had invaded the United States who do you think white America would have sided with? In the 1940s black Americans understood what was at stake if the US lost the war.
But also keep in mind, it was that generation that come back from Europe or Asia and lead directly to the civil rights fights if the 50s/60s.
Remember that war gave black Americans opportunities and experiences they never had before, it changed how they viewed themselves, the world and their place in it, at times being treated better by the occupied civilians of Germany and Italy than in the US they were no longer willing to accept mistreatment.
That’s why many were willing to fight.

Just say you’re too scared for real war and move on.
