Pinegrove is a twangy indie band who fuse Americana, emo, and indie rock into an insightful finished product. Singer and lyricist Evan Hall is a contemplative, serene frontman who possesses an intimate relationship with and an expansive knowledge of the human language. He’s acutely aware of the human experience and manages to pen astute observations about self and circumstance with genuine wonder. Though sonically somber, there is a kinetic forward focus in Pinegrove’s sound that lifts up each unconventional arrangement and unfettered chorus.

When I'm 75 years old, I will sit on my porch in the morning and play pine grove for my grandchildren
It's been 7 years since you made this comment. Are you 75 yet?
We're pretty sure that the Audiotree office alone is responsible for at least 5,000 of these views.
I'd say at least 100 are me, upon telling others to check this out as well.
I'm not sure I've heard something this great my whole life.
yeah, same situation here
Seriously press a vinyl of the session and I'll buy half of them my self
I'm sure I've clocked up about 100 myself since yesterday. They're incredible! Can't wait to see them in Birmingham next month.
I am responsible for another 5k, at least.
Whoever the audio engineer was - nailed it!
seriously, I couldnt agree more
yep. this session slays, sounds killer and the band played incredibly.
Lewis Davison thanks for that!!!
Yeah man!
This is prefect
random click went better than expected
Likewise!
I know, right.
6 years later and this session still resides in my bones.
so true
Same here
timeless
im here right now, and last weekend, probably next weekend too :D
The guitar player, playing the telecaster, just lets his patch cable hang freely. I too, like to live my life dangerously.
LOL
I've come back to watch this set a few times and each time I scroll down for this comment and chortle.
Lmao. Spoken like a stage veteran.

34:30 for Aphasia man, thanks for most of the leg work though!
Thanks... must have been a mistype. =)
br here
Thanks dude.
The slide guitar on 'Need 2' is so good it brings me to tears.
Been trying to get that tone for ages. I love it too
The harmonies from Evan during the solo fuck me up
Anthony Cardone haha I agree, it is ridiculously good :)
Don't forget &
If you’re into slide stuff, check out derek trucks
4 years later still my favorite live performance of all time.
This and their NPR desk performance, both absolute gems ♡
2022 and still agreeing with you
you should watch the "a concert a day" show here on yt from 2020 i think, that show was better imo, more of a classic concert but still really good sound and video, and think they played even better there.
@@notafanatic I'm still here too!
For me, Gentleman's mtv unplugged full show tops this one but wow, this band is leaving me speechless, especially Pinegrove - "Amperland, NY" - The Movie.
shouts out to audiotree the sound production on this is out of this world
For real! The sound is outstanding on this one... sounds like an album!
No disrespect to them, but it sounds better than their album recording lol
Voice could be turned a bit up and a bit more crisp imo (think his voice will sound better with condenser mic) But the guitars are nice and crisp tubey sounds
Anyone know what the studio/control room looks like?
@@bobmallory Actually
Simple harmony, memorable-as-hell melodies, and a genuine delivery. The lyrics are so fucking down to earth, INFP af, and it's sometimes mathy without being math rock. They groove HELLA hard, playing behind the beat and using rubato (slowing down and speeding up- for all the non-musicians). The sound fuses emo/indie/americana, giving them a wide array of an audience. Their "full" band with another guitarist and their keys/backup singer is so lush and beautiful, I nearly died seeing them live. It's a no bullshit; simple but shining with solid musicianship.
Anyways, I'll shut up about why these guys are so good, but I could probably write a whole essay on it.
They're doing something so different yet familiar at the same time it's hard to pinpoint why they sound so good but it comes down to musical and songwriting talent. I saw them live and was blown away at how fresh each song could sound just by their slight melody changes and the way hey put them together in comparison to the album versions. Love pinegrove and they never fail to impress me.
They sound quite like Band of Horses...
Wow I have never heard someone describe any music as "INFP" I literally froze mid-sentence when I read that. I'm INFP and this band makes my soul feel whole. All of their lyrics and melodies have resonated so strongly with me. Damn, if you know of any other "INFP af" bands, please do share!!
Sam Mendoza God bless you for that MBTI comparison lol
Kirby3585 lol the "INFP" music for me is King Krule, Florist, Duster, rappers like Rejjie Snow and Loyle Carner, some emo/math bands, etc. I mean, how dare I reserve such music to one Myers-Briggs type: I just said INFP, cause this music makes me feel more like one, if that makes any sense?
Hey @audiotree just wanted to mention that pinegrove has released two albums since this recording. I think maybe it's time for session 2?
Three now
Yesss definitely
Please
agreed❤
Oh man... I wish we were closer to this happening than we are now 😭
What an incredible drummer. So dynamic and emotive.

Emperor Phil Thank you! I wish this was the most up-voted comment.
No shot of the bass player til 2:20...that's so bassist.
You see him at 1:58 ! 22 whole seconds earlier haha
Song starts at around the 1 minute mark and you can see him 58 seconds after. To me that's not bad at all.
david is the best part of this video
Lol I was showing my friend this video and telling them it was such a full sound with just 2 guitars and drums.... then a wild bass appeared
Papa Trick dude the bass is pretty loud. How could u not here it.
Sometimes I'm saddened knowing that I'm too old to be part of this wonderful music that young folks are producing these day, but that doesn't stop me from listening.
no you aren't
No one's too old for writing music :3
Hey I know I’m a little late on this comment, but there’s no such thing as too old. Write, play, and appreciate the music you want. You’ll be accepted.
No such thing bud! Make whatever music your heart wants to sing!
You should keep making music no matter what!! Even if no one listens you gotta express yourself!!
This band rocks! They sound like an emo band with splash of country and it's a perfectly refreshing blend
The word you’re looking for is Midwestern emo
@@soomysoom1419 Hmm I don't think so. The name Midwest Emo refers to the unique emo scene that spawned in the Midwest back in the day. Midwest Emo retains the 'emotional' lyricism and vocal delivery of emo but replaces the hardcore instrumentation and harsh vocals for more melodic vocals and indie-rock/math-rock inspired guitars parts -- I wouldn't say that there's any country influence in Midwest Emo though (disregarding the influence country had on rock-and-roll). I should have been more specific with my original comment and said "they sound like a 'midwest emo' band with a splash of country" but "emo" has kind of become a shorthand for "midwest emo" in music discourse. Regardless, it's all just music and sometimes it's better to have music that you can enjoy without these label (something I was more concerned with 4 years ago when I wrote this comment). Thanks for the comment!
@@magicalwizard99 it’s like a folk rock/emo blend. it’s so weird but so original, and like you said quite refreshing.
@@magicalwizard99 very insightful reply. Thanks for clearing things up 🤙

No because there was a guy two years before you that posted this in the comments.
6 years later and I still keep coming back to this masterpiece. I wish they had continued making this style of music.
The Folk Rocky sound combined with Midwest Emo sound really do be hittin different
curious why you think their other stuff is really that different from Cardinal/Everything So Far. They changed a bit, as all bands do, but there is a lot of consistency there and I think Skylights and Marigold are great albums
Zach's drumming during Recycling is truly insane
i can't get over how good they are
jesus man
it's actually nearly hard to believe how good they are.. I agree
jesus man
Jesus
Sandalwood Hill it's upsetting right haha?
7 years later still hits so hard
7 years later, I still revisit this set on a regular basis 💕 ilypg
This 40 minute video has been such a huge part of my life recently it actually scares me to think how things would have gone if it didn't exist
Right? It's a daily listen for me. That's how I feel about Pinegrove in general, my life took such a positive turn when I started listening to them. Love it
Same here, from chile, south america
Dude I am a huge fan, your music is fucking amazing! Found your stuff back in the soda island days haha
Me too buddy
I have NEVER watched any 40min thing 3Xtimes in one day........ Till now. Thankyou!
wow that Aphasia was beautiful
This live sesh is WAY better than thier studio album... 10/10
That AOL sweater makes it 11/10
it needs new friends tho, i wouldve loved to hear the session version of it
They're just such a phenomenal live band, the genre seems to fit it better
Everyday I wake up, make breakfast, watch half of this, go about my day, then before bed watch the rest.
i shed at least one tear every time he sings "I love you like its the old days, when i could ask you anything"
This performance is still my go-to when it comes to listening to this band. Thank god this whole session is on Spotify as well. All the songs here are better than their album versions IMO...Maybe I'm biased because this was my introduction to them, but at any rate... it's just so great all around.
My introduction as well. I love this performance and I don't even own any physical formats of their albums. I just love coming back here from time to time. Been streaming them for the past 2 months and I just keep coming back to this performance. It's spectacular.
i'm so happy that this band has existed for years without me ever even hearing about them. it gives me hope that there are other amazing bands out there I havent even heard of.
check out the album The Good Sweat by ManDancing
I feel the exact same!
DUSK
the replay value on this session is unreal. c a n t s t o p l i s t e n i n g
Some seriously good sounding drums up in here
Easily the best live session audiotree has ever produced till this day.
flipturn is close for me but Pinegrove sounds so insanely good here
This is THE most amazing thing I’ve experienced, musically, in a long time. I’m so mad that I’m 4 years late.
aye im 7 years late lmao
@@Daniel-oj4zx i'm sad and grateful to discover this song on TikTok. I wish I had discover this before, amazing band!!
@@nicolasbaril3549same here. truly wonderful song, listening to a ton of pinegrove now. i very much prefer this version that they play live compared to the one on the record. the instruments and the PASSION in Evan’s voice is insane. love it.
years later and still just as damn good.
wow the singer has such a gorgeous voice! well written songs too! keep it up!!!! :)
yeah his voice is unbelievable. reminds me of the lead singer of the Decemberists slightly
I almost hear a folky Kurt Cobain. Wonderful.
Him and Will Toledo I believe are the closest thing we have to Cobain song writing wise.
tomdotexe too literary for cobain
Benjamin Tanis yes indeed. Good hearing dear Sire.
Five years on and this still holds up! What an incredible performance by an incredible group. Cadmium stands out as my personal favorite, blows the album version away.
I've probably listened to this every day for the past 6 months.
God, this session totally blows the album versions out of the water. So much better. Particularly "Aphasia", right after "one day I won't define myself by the one I'm thinking of", it gets so much bigger. That lovely gun-chambering effect...*shick-chick........BAM*. Kickass stuff, definitely bring them back.
I agree 100%
His voice instantly took my breath away. Wow.
Can't stop listening to Pinegrove after watching this. Each one of them plays so perfectly. It blows my mind that the drummer hits the top of the bass drum with the sticks, sounds so good!
Tons of drummers do this! Its a nice way to keep time with little audible recognition :)
austinfuzz good to know! I'm a guitar guy but drums fascinate me.
Declan Corcoran The only real downside is ruining your shells in a cosmetic sense. But they do have wood blocks you can mount right on top your bass to take the blow. This is an amazing session though and I can't stop listening either!
as a fellow guitar player I was also amazed to see the bass drum rim tap, this band is wicked nice!!!!
Almost 7 years just found this band and I’m obsessed! Incredible sound
Wow i'm so happy that clicked on this video. They blew me away. I hear a strong resemblance to Band of Horses throughout their performance. Great vibes!
That screamy post folk feels, sexcellent
It has become apparent that this will not get old. I still wish I had it on vinyl!
some of my favorite bands have done audiotree sessions and im not even mad to say this session crushes everyone. hell, this might be the best session of any band ive ever seen.
I would argue that this is the most inventive and talented band on planet earth. It's literally brilliant.
John Murph Check out shakey graves second audiotree session
I love how they all seem to really enjoy the music. Sometimes bands like playing live and interacting with the crowd, but these guys just really dig what they make together.
Hell yea!
i never thought in life i would enjoy anything with so much country influence sooooooooo much.
Wait what'd you say?
“what’s that sound?” so magnificent
I've watched this video go steadily from 20,000 to nearly 500,000 views, and rightfully so. This may be the best mixed live studio recording I've ever heard. Kudos to Pinegrove; absolutely incredible talent.
1M now. Absolutely deserve it
All of the Pine Grove fellas are so beautiful.
I'm still coming back to this every day
Pinegrove is insanely great, especially live. Saw them open for Into It. Over It. a few months back and I was blown away. Evan (the singer) even hung around in the crowd after their set and talked to everyone. He was super chill and polite. Glad to see an AT sesh with these guys. Wishing them all the best.
I fucking love this youtube channel. Thank you so much for introducing me to this unbelievable band.
this is the best thing pinegrove has ever done. hope they go more in this direction.
and unfortunately they didn't. Last couple projects they put out have been more than Mid.
Yeah they went more in the country direction
one of the best young bands out there right now
Agreed. They are great now, but I'm excited as !@#$ to see what they do with a few more break-ups, etc. in the future.
How the fuck did I allow this band to slip through my net. That feeling when you discover a band that ticks all of your boxes.....its like Christmas came early
I've watched this at least 30 times this week.
This is, hands down, the best session.
I even tried listening with my hands up and was STILL the best session.
I show this to anybody I talk about music with. phenomenal stuff. Very hard to dislike in any aspect.
I am never getting over how perfect this is.
It feels like they are so comfortable with their stuff and themselves that they don't really perform it, but GENUINELY ENJOY themselves. This is a fantastic band I'm dying to hear them live (and for the record I don't really like live music that much, but this is amazing).
Love it.
My god. This has been my daily soundtrack since i've heard it for the first time about a month ago.
Can't believe how good they are.
Angelina is a clear exaple that you can make a great song in only 1:30 minutes
the Angelina here may be the best recording/version i have heard.
I think I like the tiny desk concert one at NPR the most
What about the new new version now?
Tyler Jordan MacDonald I love the new new version. Mostly because I like the way they yell “it’s the old days”
never heard of these guys
but so far this might be the best session I've watched
like its so fucking clean
their songwriting is great
yup
.
i have met them and they seemed very wholesome however i am not discrediting what you say. its all about the music anyway. jimi hendrix did lsd
They get so emotional when they perform. All the emotions that get transferred to us... WOW
best sound engineer ever
Man, this is just such a great live session. Lots of variation from the album versions, and usually for the better somehow. The guys were just vibin.
Still convinced this is one of the best Audiotree sessions.
This is my comfort video, I always come back to it year in and year out, amazing band and amazing talent. Wonderful composition as well as beautiful sound engineering, this video and band are truly a gem. Thank you Pinegrove and Audiotree
AT LEAST WE WILL ALWAYS HAVE THE AUDIOTREE SESSIONS
They broke up?
They went on hiatus for a year (presumably when op posted this)
But nah, they released an album 2018 so as far as I know they’re still kicking
Touring this fall 👀
@@notme6066 im seeing them this tuesday and im really looking forward to it
SO good. It's been ages since I've come across a new band I've enjoyed this much. And recorded so well as usual, Audiotree! Already on my third watch of today.
yeah first I heard these guys were on audiotree, and I honestly think these songs played live sounds better than their studio versions
Me ahlso . .
There is no way around this being the best sounding live recording of all time
Sometimes i watch this and just cry, sometimes i watch this and smash my head up n down
God I want a vinyl pressing of this so badly
The intro to Need 2 sounds so beautiful I want to hug my speakers
Just discovered this band. 30 seconds in and I can already say I'm gonna like them a lot and they are incredible musicians.
i get goosebumps watching this... it's so good holy fuck
I almost forgot to listen to this today.
I just can't at all believe how good this band is, ever. It's unbelievable.
Yea man these guys rock reminds me music from the 90s and 00s
Band is incredible. First time I found them on the Run For Cover channel, I was blown away. It's been a long time since a band made me feel this way.
fuck, that version of Angelina is so good!
if you haven't listened to shakey graves AT session, check it out.
The guitar tone in this is unreal! Sound so amazing!
I watched this set around the time it came out in 2016/2017. It moved me so much I wanted to join a band and have a career in audio. I'm now 21, and wrapping up my music technology major at NYU. Without Pinegrove it's hard to say if I'd turn out the same
One of my all time favorite recordings of a live performance.
This period of pinegrove got me out of some shitty times and into a truly memorable and cherished part of my life that I enjoyed and miss so much! Thank you Pinegrove!
this band is so good it makes me want to quit playing music
They make me want to create music, lol.
It should inspire you to play MORE!
that's how I felt when I first heard, but this guy inspired me to push my singing, and just use my soul to write music.
dude I know what you mean.
No matter what you do in life, there will always be people better than you at what you love. Just play for the love of music. it's not a competition. I'll never write songs or sing as good as them, but they inspire to write as well as I can. : ) I'm sure you didn't mean it but...I feel that way often.
I've come back to this performance so many times over the years. So good.
few bands are this amazing live, these guys are great
random 40 minutes outta my day and im so glad i spent them doing this
I love how amazing they sound in this live
session
I just keep coming back... What a session
I listen to this 8 times a day and I never get sick of it.
I like how the singer's shirt magically changes between the second and third songs.
What do you call a magic dog?
6 day's later and I'm HOOKED. These guys are like breath of fresh air.
For real.
Bruh its like we were just infected by some sort of disease.
5 years later and I’m still hooked.
Man, it doesn't get much better than this.
No, for real though... This band is fantastic. Pinegrove are being recognized around the world as an exceptional act. I hope they always keep the edge in the song writing! It's so moving.
