Seeing Red Lobster at the beginning of the Food Waste piece makes a bit of sense when you learn that this year, they filed for Bankruptcy
Ironically, the endless shrimp event that was mentioned there was the catalyst for the bankruptcy, too. It's almost too much on the nose.
YES the buy in by a Union Seafood company was the downfall of Red Lobster.Union Seafood has never ran a restaurant chain before,That was such a screw job by Union Seafood and made Red Lobster look even worse because the public was never made aware of such bad decisions made by a Union Seafood .Good hard many years on the job working people lost their jobs because of Union Seafood period.

When I visited England, I was dumbfounded by the fact that the end caps at their grocery stores have food pulled that will expire that week and you can get food for pennies basically.
I was like “this makes so much more sense than throwing it out!!” My ex’s family was low income and idk how his mom would have fed a family of 4 on single income without that setup.
Here in Czechia, I quite often buy the "save the food" items.
They're cheaper, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with them, and because they're usually sold in advance I usually still eat them before the "best by" date anyway. Win!
Though probably my favourite trick is going to the supermarket in the evening and grabbing a bag of that day's breadrolls bagged up as "stale for breadcrumbs". They're not! They're perfectly fine to eat!
US here, sometimes we'll have extremely discounted foods at our Kroger stores, not just the breads and goodies that seem to be shoved onto a random portable metal shelf/cage thing, but also products on the shelf like yogurts (which I'll buy if it's the good ones). Yesterday though was a cream cheese cinnamon bun breakfast (more like dessert) discounted to like $3.... but I didn't want to mess with that 😂 you don't *really* know why it's discounted, cause it's packaged in-store, not meant to last more than a couple days anyway.
The the problem with that is you get ‘the usuals’ I’m in the UK and I witnessed an almost fist fight over a reduced pineapple. I even had people complain that there was nothing good reduced.
If you have any local grocers in your area this is quite common!

As a dairy clerk at a grocery store I can say confidently that most damages are due to dates. Sometimes I let things sell out and the shelf go empty just so i don't have to toss it out due to it being expired. One the biggest issues is when the shelf is low and you put more out, depending on the date, people will over look the ones up front and go straight to the back. When that happens people tend to think that there is something wrong with the ones in the front. People will keep picking around it until it goes out of date and i have to pull it. Another problem is while the food itself might be good the package may be damaged. So long as any seals arent broken I'll keep it out. So again people will pick around it until it needs to be pulled. I usually pull things if its within 3 days of the expiration date.

I remember when i first started watching Last Week Tonight finding this episode and being horrified by food waste. I do all I can to not waste food, and if I were to ever be President, I would make this one of my top priorities, because it's ridiculous.
These are all bringing back so many memories of watching these in college.

Those were separate incidents. Before he was in prison, the military hunted him down and he escaped through the bathtub tunnel. After he was put in prison, he tunneled under his cell and escaped from prison through the newly dug tunnel

A friend of mine is a food chemist and she told me how best-before-dates or use-by-dates are evaluated for each product group. I live in a European country but I thought that's the same in any industrial country.
The companies themselves determine those dates, probably through a combo of customer satisfaction and profit motives.

Luckily, I'm too poor to waste my food. I shop at dollar tree, usually I've got about $10 to spend, gets me 2 decent meals with no waste.
For real, you gotta turn the compost pile…especially if there meat in there.
Generally composting meat is tricky because of the chance of pathogens that can either colonize the soil or lie dormant, then pass on to the produce grown using that compost. Not _impossible,_ just not recommended.

In Australia, for years we had law where every produce had to be sold regardless of how it looks to prevent food waste, we have become a shit tone more strict with our foods after 90s, I can’t remember the exact reason why but it was something to do with political concerns. I feel bad for Americas when this has gone on for over 2 decades, I honestly do. 🐋

We, in Quebec or at least at the grocery store I work at, donate as much as we can, but it comes with a problem where some employees use it as garbage can which is more work for NPO workers. The chain also has a deal with a company that pays 70% of the cost of some products that are usually unsellable due to damaged packaging. We throw bad produces in compost bins. A business comes to pick up the bins and discarded meat. Sometimes we have reps that refuses to donate their past due date products and just throw them in the garbage, we usually sneak them out to the donation boxes.
