The problem with this. Is that in the past, the European governments and the U.S. government met on First Nation terms, under First Nation laws and customs to discuss trade, treaty and norms. The European powers operated under native law in native territory with exceptions based on time periods and settlement locations. This is an imbalance, the government should be meeting under traditional norms if they mean reconciliation.

The "$5" phenomenon actually wasn't that widespread. Only happened during the land boom years around 1906 in Oklahoma. Many tribes today gave White appearing members due to 2 or more generations of intermarriage with Whites, which brings out the European features. But won’t acknowledge article 2 of the treaty that gives freedman and descendants full citizenship to the tribe. My question is if indigenous people have notoriously been separated from there tribes,family, and even communities, how can you not have an understanding in the whole tribal recognition for services? The response from Mr. Newland indicated a status for the Freedmen not included in the tribe's citizenship places them in nationality limbo - people without a country.
Have you also considered the fact that our Freeman Freedman ancestors were already part of what the colonizers came and name tribes, nations and bands?? Our ancestors were not Africans rather other Indigenous persons that others made agreement to delineate from and assist in keeping our ancestors prisoners of war on these labor camps they called plantations. Colonizers kept meticulous records. Post "slavery" all but a few Africans were sent back to Africa - Sierra Leone and later Liberia.

The problem with this. Is that in the past, the European governments and the U.S. government met on First Nation terms, under First Nation laws and customs to discuss trade, treaty and norms. The European powers operated under native law in native territory with exceptions based on time periods and settlement locations. This is an imbalance, the government should be meeting under traditional norms if they mean reconciliation.
