Why we dont ask everyone to validate their journey

  • This video is an example, why we bus drivers don't ask everyone to validate their ticket. Passengers are allowed to be on a journey without a ticket at the driver's discretion. I apologize to all of the regular passengers if this seems unfair, but we can't always sort out fare evasion
The said passengers of course are marked for fare evasion and the TFL is notified about that. There are few groups of people for who we don't send notification about fare evasion.

From watching a couple of other videos I initially thought this bus driver is harsh but I have changed my view (and deleted an earlier comment) - well done for maintaining standards on public transport

      Thank you.
I know I am not a gentle person, but my job is to drive 14 ton bus when loaded can go close to 20ton. I cannot take risks, because of one passenger that thinks he can speak to me like we are in his home.
I had late shift today, but here is the reply to your original comment, since it took me long to write:
Drivers on TFL services have no right to exclude NOBODY from traveling on the bus. If the doors are opened by the driver while the bus is at a bus stop, then that's permission to come aboard. From here on to become a passenger, you have a lot of responsibilities. Failing any one of these the driver can act on his/her own discretion. Confronting the driver in any way is a big NO NO and any driver that has self respect about the work place will not drive with you aboard. (you are allowed to stay aboard as long as this service is active)
If a person breaks the law eg. drinks alcohol or carries an open container of alcohol, then that's an offense and different set of rules apply there and the driver must escalate. Obviously there are a lot of other offenses, but for this example I am using this one.
This passenger did no offense and I as driver have no right to exclude him. There are other rules in place of TFL services
You didn't listen to what I said in this video. Once you realize the meaning of the words I say in my poor broken English, please then comment.
Any driver has the right to refuse to drive if ANYTHING has THE POTENTIAL for negative affect on the driver's ability. As a matter of fact if I am not well rested when I go to work I can just walk out without consequences unless I do that often obviously... Then for that day people will have to wait double the amount of time for the next bus. Stopping at a bus stop or terminating the service wont cause discomfort for all of the passengers for that day. Therefor it's severity is so small and if I was questioned in disrespectful and sharp manner then that's more than justified.
For any questions do ask TFL, they can explain to you what to do in situations like this and how to travel on TFL services.

@@TheDirector17 ive seen you've changed your comment. no idea what it said originally, but hear me out.
us "DRIVERS" are given so much shit day to day, when all we're doing is a job. People fail to see, we're at work and just expect the bus to go, with no regard or respect for the person driving it..
many examples like "does this bus go to ------" not , "sorry mate do you go to ----". That slight difference actually makes you feel a bit more human and appreciated
A "thank you" for being up at 4am on new years day, or being up at midnight on christmas eve so someone can get home after enjoying their night while we're working and missing time with our families.
Or when we're sat on the stand having a small ,5 minute stretch and a breather in quiet, just having a bit of a rest and then a knock on the door, or coming to the cab window and shouting "WHEN DOES THIS BUS LEAVE?, I'M LATE"
firstly, not my problem YOU are late. Should've got the earlier bus as it's all scheduled and I cannot just leave because you want me to.
second, how about asking nicely? or just waiting for the bus to start up like a decent human
imagine i came to your workplace and just started barking at you????
fact is, there's not many jobs where you can go to prison or get the sack from a tiny little mistake OR even worse, being nice.
      imagine this scenario.
I'm at red traffic lights, guy runs into the road and knocks on the door.
      A) I let him on, being nice! it's cold outside, i'm on time and he's late but i'll let him on. I've broke the law. if he falls or gets hurt, I'll get sacked for opening the door. Same as people asking to be let off at traffic lights, i'll get sacked if you step off into a cyclist or trip from the height difference
      B) The lights turn green at the same moment he knocks on the door. I move off and drag him down the road, under the front wheels as he goes over... i kill him. Guess whos losing their job and going to prison?
The thing is, theres so many other jobs that pay more, have less risk and you're appreciated and respected. People see a bus and that's it. Just some mug behind the wheel who don't deserve a smile, a hello, a thanks. 9hours of driving, listening to the bell going multiple times for the same stop all day long ,screaming kids, people sitting right next to or behind you and screaming down a phone, it's not easy honestly it isn't. Any little distraction and you do something minor wrong, you're putting 50 peoples lives at risk and your job.
There's a massive safety side to it all too, people think we're just assholes for driving off when someones knocked on the door, or someone wants to get on/off before the stop, or in between the stop, or at traffic lights whereever but we're the ones who are responsible for absolutely everything and we get sacked or end up in court or in front of the traffic commissioner. Same as people standing on the stairs, or overcrowding, or buggys not in the dedicated space/bay.... we're not saying it to be big, almighty powertripping whatever... it's because its a hazard and quite frankly, if i have to brake hard because a kid runs infront of the bus, or a car pulls out in front or i have to swerve or anything, people are getting hurt. Imagine the guy on the stairs falls and headbutts the metal staircase... his brains all over the place now. I lose my job, he's lost his life and its all my fault because he didn't get off the stairs.
I do apologise for the length of this, but i felt like i had to get a few things off my chest lol

@@jjmmjj9999 Thanks for the message and no need to apologise for a good vent - I think more of us Londoners should hear the bus driver's perspective.
I wrote and then edited my original comment on another video on this channel where someone accuses the driver of closing the door on them, so the driver states he feels unsafe and asks the passenger to leave the bus. On first watching it felt to me unreasonably sassy from the driver, I thought perhaps it was being done to try and go viral etc, and I posted a bit of a pointed comment trying to call this out.
Having then watched the driver's other vids and some of the completely unreasonable and hostile passengers he has had to up with, as well as considering trying to drive a 15 ton bus and 75 people sometimes in low light on London's chaotic roads where it is increasingly hard to follow every single rule etc, my mind had bene totally changed in just a few vids and I realised on reflection it's absolutely fair for him to not take any nonsense, so edited my comment to apologise/give support.
We wouldn't tolerate someone walking into a hair dressers, cafe or dentists office in the manner seen in some of the pax videos here and so I don't think it should be tolerated by bus drivers.
Very happy to admit I was wrong and has been a while since my view of a video changed in a complete 180 so hence commenting. Really interesting to see your views too which confirm that I was wrong at first and very happy to be corrected/will bear in mind when interacting with bus drivers and meeting them out on the roads (I always make an effort to let you guys out and I don't envy the size of your vehicle on our roads in London!)

@@TheDirector17 the passengers are one side of the story, other road users are another
I've said it before, and I'll say it again... A car licence should include a day driving a HGV, motorbike/scooter and a bus just to get a feel for how scary it is when people cut in front. All while trying to brake gently because youve got elderly standing up etc
A driver had a knife pulled on him a few weeks back for asking someone to tap their card... £1.75 and he's pulled a knife out. Ridiculous...
You're right. Hair dressed, cafe or dentist scenario. If someone had an attitude there, they'd get looks and the public would defend the employee, but on a bus no one defends the driver. It's all "I wanna get home" then the abuse starts
Its refreshing to see your outlook changed, not in a "told you" way, but that you realised we are taken for granted and not appreciated by 80% of people boarding unfortunately
I speak on behalf of all drivers. Thank you for letting us out
It's hard enough trying to squeeze into a gap with the size of it and slow acceleration, so any help, space and time is greatly appreciated

As a bus driver you aren't allowed to stop driving, because some one have not validated their ticket. I know some drivers do it, but "it's the passengers responsibility to validate their ticket" and the driver have to mark the fare evasion so there wont be a trouble if inspection happens.
For almost 2 years I moved hundreds of thousands of people and I refused to drive around 10 times. 3-4 of them were for no ticket. On general there were from 3-7 fare evasions on average per trip on that bus. Usually there are 18-24 buses running doing between 100-180 trips depending on the route.
So per day on a bus route there are between 300-1000 or more fare evasions. Just don't tell TFL I told you these numbers. On average a bus route loses over half a million PER YEAR to fare evasion and we have hundreds of bus routes.

When you go to the bank try putting two cards in the machine. When he returned he put only one card to the machine, so it worked. The machines can read only one card at a time. This is so when you tap your wallet, you don't end up paying for a ticket with all the cards inside there. Why will the system allow people to be ticketed on all their cards when they touch them together?

There are always people that throw a tantrum like a kid. It happens most often during peak hour. From my experience it happened once per 3-4 months with me at least. In general there are always antisocial people.
I believe that I shall discourage abusive people and negative attitude especially at my work place. Considering children and even adults see these actions, they start to imitate thinking thatshow to behave in public. Effort shall be put on stopping them.
Most drivers turn the blind eye. Which I understand since a lot of them have enought problems at home and dont want problems at work as well.
I know I can solve any problems, thats why I act instead of turn blind eye.
Edit: London bus companies discourage wearing a body camera since they dont want drivers to have any evidence as this empowers drivers and the company doesnt have the upper hand.
I will not wear body camera for now as I changed bus route. Once there is antisocial behaviour inside or outside the bus, I will resume filming and uploading.
