I realized one thing that made contests like 2016 and 2000 so incredible is that they were mostly doing this on the 1st attempt. After the 1st one, all the shock value is gone cause we know what you’re gonna do unless it’s something insane.

And then there is no point in replaying it in slow mo or whatever since you've already seen everything too. Cole Anthony having the timbs on and eventually dunking may just be the most exciting moment from this contest. People from Aaron Gordon, Zach Lavine, MJ, Dominique, Vince Carter, Blake Griffin, and others set the bar so high that this year was so bland. Literally. Salute to the dunkers but felt the competitors could’ve brought some excitement somehow. There was no props… nothing.

I think part of what made Lavine and Gordon so special are obviously the creativity and athleticism of their dunk performance but also it was the *quietness of the crowd.* It really helped set the tone and build suspense to the element of surprise.

I feel bad for Obi because so many people are saying this was the worst dunk contest ever but he’s getting lumped in with the other 3 dudes who were totally incompetent. Even the reporter afterwards had the nerve to make her one question to Obi basically asking “do you agree with Reggie and D Wade that this dunk contest sucked?” Obi was awesome in this dunk contest and was a deserving winner. If he can come back next year and just hit his finishes a little more flush he’ll repeat as champion and shut everyone up.
People are ignorant about dunking, topppin's dunks were super hard to do, even for the best pro dunkers... Some of his dunks were 50 if we grade like the previous contests. I don't know about his number of attemps but he could have finish better on some of them.
Second point he is tall and doesn't jump out of the bbuilding like other guys but's it's not his fault, even gordon doesn't have an extraordinary vertical jump.

I thought the team competition was an interesting take on the "PG" skills challenge this year. Maybe try that with the dunk contest and force these guys to come up with something more unique/impressive. That and/or update the scoring to account for tangible metrics like vertical jump (relative to the dunker), distance traveled, and force of the dunk. FInal score = 75% judges score + 25% metrics score
you beat me to it lol but yeah something like ice skating where the difficulty of the dunk is factored in and you wouldn't need to give the judges your dunk program beforehand either so the surprise isn't ruined it's just that you wouldn't want mfs trying really hard dunks and getting points for them even if they brick or w/e so weighting the style points or judges' score or w/e is a good idea
another idea is bring back the Foot Locker Slam Fest and have NBA dudes go against other non basketball pro athletes that can dunk like Davante Adams n Tyreek Hill n Noah Lyles n shit in a bracket or as teams or something cause I'm sure that would motivate mfs to actually compete n shit lol

Three ideas for the dried up dunk contest. First is low rim dunk contest for better more creative dunks (8.5-9’ rim). Second have teams like skills contest, 3 nba players vs 3 pro dunkers on 10’ or 9’. Third is to have a dunk contest on trampoline courts. I think the reason the dunk contest is dry is due to the lack of creativity and we see the same dunks every year. Tell me what you think about those.

I think the first two ideas are refreshing but the last is a bit to fantastical for what the nba is. Also the risk of injury is too high with trampolines, meaning no one would want to participate.
I like the first idea, gradually raising the rim up to the final seems to be fun. Plus, most dudes would be able to have that bounce/flair to make their dunks first time.

I’m not seeing anyone mention the actual issue with the dunk contest. It’s not that these guys can’t dunk or do flashy stuff, the problem is we’ve seen pretty much every type of dunk possible and many different variations. Outside of using props which we’ve seen already, it’s hard to create a new dunk without possibly killing yourself trying to flip in the air. That elite players are smart for not participating, these way too much pressure for something that can’t really be achieved… just my opinion, I would hope I’m wrong

I think stars wouldn't deal with that pressure tbh. Pick Kobe and LeBron. If those two had been the only two participants in one season, we would still be talking about that contest even if the dunks were "average", just because of a possible beef between LeBron and Kobe.
Yes, most dunks have already been done, which is why the NBA should try to recruit stars known for good in-game dunks and make them go at each other. (Jordan vs Wilkins anyone?). Ok players can deliver, like Lavine and Gordon in 2016, but that was an anomaly. NBA should focus on bringing stars to the contest so we can stick to a narrative, because that's what the NBA is about: narratives.
So I think it's more about their egos than pressure to deliver Tacko Fall dunks.
Talking about that, a 1v1 contest would be awesome as well, but stars would probably be afraid to accept the challenge and maybe get 'embarrassed' by another star.

I'd like to see a one-on-one competition. Maybe have 8 or 16 guys, 5 minute games, single elimination. With their egos, the stars would all want to participate.
A good dunk contest consists of:
- doing dunks u can actually do
- making them on your first attempt
- making them clean and with power
reguardless of degree of difficulty. U do those 3 things, its a good dunk
