  • We're playing a cherryburst 79 and talking about tone and of it's worth the extra money over a Vintera or a modern reissue. Be sure to chime in afterwards in the comments and let us know what you think!

    81 date is probably when it was asebled. In 79 the pickups were greybacks with date stamps, and the shealding would only be behind the pots and switch.

    Those are X1 pickups which came in around 1980. I have a Strat with an S9 serial number also with those pickups. You see the full pickguard shielding introduced at the same time. Prior to then, it would've been "grey bottom" pickups and the shiedling was limited to around the controls.
    S9 serial guitars were made up till ~1981. So this guitar is highly likely to be a 1981.

      Good eye! Had a gentleman catch this a few weeks back. The owner had mentioned buying it in 79 but I think either I misheard or he misspoke.

    I too have a79 hard tail strat in blonde with rosewood fretboard, bought it myself new from the shop and still have the swing tags. No tuning issues but really does need a re fret now as not enough fret to re crown them again. I will not be selling it it’s just too good.

  • @TheSepponaut
    @TheSepponaut Před 2 lety +5

    this guitar is made in 1979. The S8 and S9 serials have been used until early 1982, due to the fact that the E0 and E1 serials haven't been used for the Big Headstock Standard Strat. The black plastic bottom pickups are a further proof for this theory. Just check the pot codes. I guess it's 13781xx, which makes it a 1981 for sure. Neck date could be the next point to check. The color (Siena Sunburst) was also used in 1981-84. This is not a 1979 strat. If it sounds fine, it's just a fact on paper that doesn't matter. Have fun with this fine guitar.

      @breilly66  Před 2 lety +1

      Fair enough! I'll take your word for it as it appears you've done the due diligence. The owner brought it to me and said he had bought it in 79 new. Perhaps he meant to say otherwise.

      @@breilly66 it‘s 40 years ago and I suspect the previous owner has collected a lot more experiences since then. It’s absolutely ok if memory shades a bit :-) it’s a limited color. So it‘s valuable for that feature alone. Have fun with this beauty

      @@breilly66 Yeah, definitely an '81. I owned a one of these early Dan Smith strats where he started with changing the strats to the X1 pickups with the plastic bottoms like this one (much hotter bridge pickup), and then very soon after made the move to change to the small headstocks. Fender was notorious for putting "new" guitars together for sale in the early '80s with necks and pots left over from previous years (late '70s). You could buy a new Strat back then that could have 3 years of different year new parts.

    79 is my birth year. I’m on the hunt for a good Sierra Burst (which I thought this guitar here was). I haven’t seen a cherry burst. If they made cherry burst in 79, then THAT will be my new target. 🤘🏻

      You just need to listen to some of the demos. Some of the 79s are killer guitars. I think the pickups play a big part but also the heavy ash bodies. And they aren't all 10lbers. You can still fairly easily find them under 9lb which as a Les Paul player, I have no issues with!

  • @ramsilva

    I felt personally attacked when you mentioned Get Back and the rise of Casino popularity 😅 During that time I bought four casinos but I whittled the selection down to just one, a 1996 Natural Peerless with GFS pickups (original pickups included too). Ended up breaking even when I sold off the remaining three.
    Great vid, as always!

    That's a great looking guitar! The speed knobs are goofy but for the most part it looks and sounds fantastic. Glad you sorted out the year thing (First thing I noticed was it was shaping up to be later than 79) - The Rosewood is nice to see. The maple was SO popular back at that time and I always thought the rosewood neck dressed the stratocaster up a bit. Glad those string ends-disappeared by the end lol.

    I have one 79 and I really love the tone and the overall construction. However I think I will sell it due to the thickness of the neck, unfortunately mine has a very chunky fat neck and it doesn't let me enjoy the guitar as much as I would like. I have a Mexican 70s Reissue and I feel much more comfortable with that neck.

    • @breilly66
      @breilly66  Před rokem +1

      Yea those models were killer but like you said, shape is shape and some aren't as hospitable.
      This one was def in the flat/wide part of town. And I must admit, since working on that cherry burst and playing it, I've barely touched my 68 clone.
      My clone is def a step down.

    I've been collecting 70s Strats because I can get them for $2,000-3,000 compared to the 60s Strat which are 5 figures starting with even the 69s. Did you mention that the 79s are boat anchors ? My favorite Strat is a mutt with a 74 body and 77 neck. Somebody took a planer to the back and shaved off some excess wood. It now has the nice smokey barroom amber. Got it for $1,000. The only 70 Strat I had problems with had some E tuners that kept slipping. I got some Fender reissue tuners and discovered that they were too big. I would have had to drill 6 holes so I just put on some regular Klusons and it's fine now. That was on a 74 Strat.

    I have been interested in a 79. Not sure what you mean by "best playing and tone" strat, but "fact it is a loser". Is the latter referring to build? Thanks for the detailed review.

    • @breilly66
      @breilly66  Před 5 měsíci

    Nice color!! It reminds me Richie Sambora’s Fender Stratocaster with star inlays, cherry red color body. BTW, what brand’s wireless system are you using?

    • @breilly66
      @breilly66  Před 2 lety +2

      Totally! It's a Line 6 G10. Honestly, best investment I've made in years. Toured with it in 2018 and did sessions and shows right up till the present with that wireless.
      Battery life is insane. Very intuitive design. Steel casing on the transmitter. Unusually high quality. Only complaint? Power supply is a mini USB. They should have used the 9v to rap into the power supply. But a really good unit.

      @@breilly66 Indeed. I usually use Teles when I perform with my band (DUNGAREE DOGS NYC), but I broke out the '79 Hardtail at rehearsal one day last month and I fell in love with her all over again. She sings sweetly through my Fender Deluxe Reverb and it just feels so right in my hands. I may switch back to using to perform and just have my favorite of my three Teles as my backup.

    Showing my age I guess but 79 doesn't seem like vintage to me. My first CBS Strat cost me £150 and my second, a hardtail, was £200. They were rightly considered wholly unremarkable and to hear them now described in such a glowing way is laughable. They're ok. Just ok.

    • @breilly66
      @breilly66  Před 7 měsíci

      Indeed. But I'll disagree and say that inconsistencies are the real issue. Just like the Epiphone NYers of the early 50s.
      Some are great, some are not.
      Everything is common till it isn't I guess.
