The rule really ought to be not "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" but "do unto others as THEY would have YOU do unto THEM" -- because if you give them what you need and not what they need, you aren't really fully acknowledging their right to have different preferences from you that you might not understand even though your intentions were good.
