  • We carry on our journey across Spain to the North, this time we have a few mishaps along the way. One was unpreventable and the other was entirely our stupidity! Lessons learnt.
    First Stop The Castle of Villafuerte de Esgueva. It's located at the top of a small hill on the outskirts of the Valladolid town of Villafuerte de Esgueva , dominating a good part of the valley.
    Garci Franco de Toledo, a noble descendant of converted Toledo Jews, inherited the town from his father and ordered the construction of the stately castle in 1472. Here we park up for a night in peace and quiet.
    2nd Stop the Stunning Picos de Europa National Park. Stunning mountains and Riano Reservoir. A very sad story here though.
    Riaño is a new town born from an accident of life.' Alfonso Gonzalez (RTVE in 2010).
    The murder of the village where I was born’
    ‘Riaño is a new town born from an accident of life. Well, rather from a murder, the murder of the town where I was born’. With these words Alfonso González, neighbour of Riaño and present in the demolition of the preceding landscape, referred to what was his home for 22 years in an interview published by RTVE in 2010. Known as Fonso in the village, he has just published, by the way, a novel titled Tocan las campanas a Concejo, a book that tells the neighbourhood struggle that took place in Riaño. But, what was so serious that even after 30 years it cannot be forgotten?
    Riaño is a municipality and a village located at the crossroads between Asturias, Cantabria and Palencia. It rises 1,133 meters above sea level in a León integrated in the Cantabrian Mountain Range, of which it is part. It is also the youngest village in the province, since it was built in 1987 as a cruel substitute for the old Riaño, which was buried by the reservoir along with six other villages and part of two others. Thus, the rubble of Anciles, Salió, Huelde, Éscaro, La Puerta, Pedrosa del Rey, Riaño and part of Burón and Vegacerneja slide under the surface of this beautiful wasteland.
    After leaving here to drive through the mountains, it is here we get ourselves into a bit of a pickle! We decided to take off the road tracks up the mountains. After 2ks we realized our mistake. Too narrow, big gulleys to get over, and huge holes along the track. We grounded out several times. Luckily we find a turn around place where the road is slightly wider. We make our way back down to stay at a beautiful Are in the village below, Posada de Valdeon. Gorgeous views!
    Join us in Part 3 of our travels in Northern Spain, coming soon. Not so scary and a little bit more tranquil without the hairy mountain bends!

    BIG THANKS TO KILDWICK TOILETS FOR GIVING US OUR TOILET

    =========================================================================
    We’re Chris, Cat and Rolo our chocolate labrador. We live full time in our self-converted 7.5 tonne DAF LF 45 Lorry traveling around Europe. We've traveled in motorhomes for over 15 years all over Europe and I cat lived in a motorhome in NZ traveling over 25 years ago with my girls then aged 3 months and 3 years old. Motorhoming and traveling are not new to us it been a way of life for many years but we decided life is too short and we wanted to live a simpler life and go full time. We downsized from a 4 bedroom family home to buy our 7.5-tonne lorry and spent two years converting our lorry to become our tiny home on wheels. it was a gruelling and hard slog building our own tiny home on wheels but worth it in the end, as we have our own unique home to travel with on wheels.
    We moved into Florry The Lorry at the end of February 2018 and have since been touring around Europe. We love our SMALL home, BIG adventures and will continue to have many adventures and life in Florry wherever that may be. Stay Safe. Hugs, Cat, Chris & Rolo (FLorry The Lorry)

    The roads to the castle are not too bad , normal roads. The road to the lake was narrow and gravel and a little scary. In the description it tells you the location 🚛🙏😘👍

      We do find some nice places but that was silly of us to go off track up the mountain. All good and we got down safe. See you soon at another fest hopefully 🙏👍🐾🚛
