      @Pr0fessorScience Před 4 lety +378

      @Carlos Spiceywhiener what exactly do YOU think judging means? The WHOLE POINT of taking a "no judgment" stance on parenting is to encourage the kid to be open and honest about what's happening with them, INCLUDING admitting to doing not so great things, so that the parents can actually help as best as possible. If the kid is too scared of the parents' reaction to admit to something, then the parents are incapable of helping the kid deal with the something.
      This dad saying something like "I'd kill him" for smoking demonstrates exactly WHY the kid didn't tell his parents that he'd started smoking, which is why he bought cheap online smoking cessation drugs off the internet without actually visiting a doctor, which is what almost killed him. So the kid almost died because he was scared to tell his parents he smoked. It is possible to teach your kids there are behaviors you don't approve of AND to teach them that they shouldn't be scared of admitting to you if they engaged in one of those behaviors. This ain't it, chief.

      I still feel phantom burns on my arm and ribs to this day.
      The hospital also forgot to put novocaine cream on my arm, so when they wrapped my burns, I was in a realm of pain that was undescribable. Took them another hour to get the bandages back off, apply the cream, and tgen wrap it up.
      I got pissed because pain was the reason I went to the ER in the first place.

      @SyntheticDivine Před 2 lety +12

      This represents an inaccurate and old understanding of the mechanisms of pain. Modern research indicates that the excitation of glial cells by damage to the body can cause them to transmit the necessary chemicals to signal pain to the brain, even in those cases where the nerves themselves are damaged or dead. Which is probably why just about every third degree burn victim you encounter will report excruciating pain.

It's unimaginable. It becomes unbearable within minutes, and then it gets worse, and then it stays there. It's constant. It doesn't go away. And it lasts a *long* time. Nova Wittam it actually relatively small, most venous air embolisms are not fatal and can resolve on their own.

    As a smoker of over a decade, yeah, House is right. 1, the skin in proximity to an ember burn soaks up a lot of the damage as well, and the spread of heat is basically circular, 2) the stain of smoke on the fingers is unmistakable, my left index and middle have permanent browning of the skin from the staining, and 3) I started smoking because I was stressed. All I f these line up perfectly with that part of the diagnosis, and I don't need to consult my dad, a smoker of 40 years, to know that's true universally.
