Crossing the Caribbean Sea 1200 miles nonstop from Guadeloupe to Panama was a new milestone for us, as we completed our longest crossing with just the two of us (and Harry the Hydrovane as well of course, our unofficial crew member).
Another first for us was a very close encounter with a whale that crept up on us one early morning and appeared right alongside our hull. A scary moment for sure! In this first part of our crossing we experience some rough weather conditions with heavy squalls, acceleration zones and a bumpy sea state as we depart Guadeloupe and the Lesser Antilles.
Make sure to buckle up and get the popcorn out for this one!
To elaborate further on our little whale encounter we have put together an article with a break down of the chain of events that morning including photos, our general thoughts on whale collisions at sea and if there is anything that could have been done to prevent this. Lovely content- I get the sense of the place through your filming and editing, also your reasoning for switching sails or strategy while sailing are super helpful as a learning tool. Love that you don’t have wall to wall music trying to hype “fluff” content.
Wow thanks! We really appreciate this and glad it provides some value. Cheers for reaching out, fair winds 🤙
@@SailingBeaver cheers!
Hi guys: I love this video and it tells me you chose the right boat. To me, a big part of sailing around the world is the sailing. The boat is lively but easily controlled. The wider stern helps with lateral stability especially off the wind but also reaching. Your frequent speed reports at 7-9 knots differs markedly with the wallowing heavy and pinched end boats that never enjoy surfing. Just so you know, with a crew and under spinnaker you would be achieving 13-16 knots. In my 40.7, even more. We pray for these conditions, and when we have them, it usually takes two days for the rhythm of the ocean to fade... Your video brings it back. Thanks.
This is about the most realistic sailing video I've seen for a while. Thanks folks.
No worries, glad you enjoyed. Cheers 🤙
Nicole has become so much more a confident and comfortable sailor since the first few videos. She should set a goal in 2022 of doing a short, single handed passage. Congrats to both of you and I very much enjoy following your adventure.
Thanks mate and glad to have you along. For sure, we have both gained a lot more confidence and experience. A great idea and we’ll keep it in mind. Cheers 🤙
Haha yeah Nicole solo round the world!!!

This brings back memories when we sailed the Carribbean Sea for a year back in 1974. Visited Jamaica, Haiti, Columbia, Panama, and finally Cayman Islands. A lot of our cruising was in nice weather like what you had. Glad to see you wearing your safety harness ... So many don't do that and end in tragedy. Good luck to you both!
Sounds like a great trip. Cheers and fair winds 🤙
Finally, she is around many poles that she doesn't have to dance on during a "trip". What a relief.

Unlike a lot of sailing videos, Sailing
Beaver does a great job of recording their seamanship running down wind in moderate conditions for quite long distances. Especially like your tactics during squalls and night time sail plan. New to your channel. Keep up the great work and enjoy life!
Thank you for another outstanding video. I'd have to say that your videos are among my favorite's and capture the experience of passage making extremely well. Looking forward to many more. Cheers!
Real sailing!! Thank u!!
Cheers, fair winds 🤙
Subscribed. Loved the active sailing shots and hearing the water & wind. Seeing you work the sails was cool. Nobody else lets us see and hear it like you guys do. Awesome!
Awesome, thanks so much. Glad you enjoy, we’ll keep them coming 🤙
One of the few channels that manage to capture the sea state... nicely done.. Have a happy new year.
Thankyou sir, glad you enjoyed. You too! Happy 2022! ☺️
👌⛵
Serious waves 🌊🌊🌊🌊
🤙
Hi, very well documented sailing passage. You managed to capture and get me the "on board feeling," like as I would have been with you, awesome. Cool with red light installation the cockpit. Cheers.
Thank you mate, Part 2 shall be up next week stay tuned. Glad we could have you along for the journey. Cheers 🤙
👍
👍
Congrats on your 4th or 5th major crossing!! Bravos Marinheiros.!! Agree with A Rottie. I love your music choices. Again, I love the minimalistic style. Hearing the ocean for major stretches of the video makes the experience real. Sail On!!
Thanks mate very kind! Your correct, it’s our 5th (offshore) passage and a few bigger ones to come. Cheers and fair winds 🤙
Thanks for taking me along. It was a fun ride. 🙂
No worries 🤙
Just found your channel looking and researching for Hydrovane steering and it's effectiveness.....the footage you've captured is really great. So nice to hear the wind and the waves rather than music overlays. Looking forward to catching up with you're adventures. Will definitely be fitting the Hydrovane to the boat I'm buying, an old one I might add.
Wow thank you so much for this lovely comment! Glad to have you onboard and hear that you are getting some value from our videos, makes it all worth it! Don’t know if you already seen it but we did a whole video of when we fitted the vane here 👉🏼 czcams.com/video/kqZltv29IjI/video.html
Great episode!! Thanks for taking us along for the passage! Loved watching those swells march on by.
Thanks mate! Glad you liked it!😊🙌
Ahoy there, beaver or benot, that is the question.. Lovely vlogs love that your about quality for the viewer and not into filling the minutes with boring never ending repairs.. Thankyou, so excited to see all you have achieved and will do..( I love repair videos but not the second by second boring task..)happy new year
Thankyou sir very kind words. Happy watching and glad you enjoy. Happy new year 🤙
Great sailing footage! Hydrovane is the best tool for passages. Keep up the good work.
Thank you kind sir, will do 🙏
Echoing the other comments…great vibe, great sailing. Thank you for sharing your adventure!
Glad to have you along for the journey. Cheers 🤙
Great filmmaking! Let’s go Brandon!

This video is excellent. Thanks for taking the time to explain your sail set up during your passage. Really good commentary guys.
Thanks Bryan appreciate the feedback. Glad we didn’t bore you with all the chatter. Cheers 🤙
One of the best videos I ever seen, and I seen a lot. You are handling your boat so well!!
Thanks so much! Glad your along for the ride 🤙

Glad you enjoy, thanks for the feedback 😊
Excellent video - great to see a focus on real passage making!
Thank you 😊. Stay tuned, there is plenty to come as we get into the Pacific 🤙

Just found your channel, you got my sub and like……brings back many memories when sailing, wing and wing……now at 66 I have switched to a Grand Banks 42, much more comfortable but I do miss sailing. I grew up in Panama on the Pacific side. I love Panama.
Ah great and welcome aboard! Panama is a beautiful spot! 🤙
Yep as allready said really enjoyed the video and the reasoning behind the sail setups
Cheers
Tim
Great, glad you enjoyed. Cheers 🤙
Totally agree with the 'on-board feeling' .. I'm a virtual sailor but u inspire me to become a real sailor one day...it's all about sailing isn't it.. thank you...
Ah that’s great glad you enjoy. Stay tuned as this week we have an extended virtual sailing episode with lots of just sailing. 🤙⛵️
God I miss those days, never took the long route through the Caribbean. You guys do an outstanding job!
Cheers mate, much appreciated. Fair winds 🤙
Excellent job both video and boat handling! ✌️stay safe
Than you sir. Cheers 🤙

Thank God a Sailing Channel with no Dog, Cat, or Baby ! Yet ? lol
Haha, none of the above sir! 🤘
excellent
Cheers 🤙
I love this episode and can’t wait for the next. Do you have a fin keel?
Yew, glad you enjoyed. Yep just a standard Beneteau cast iron fin keel.
Hallo ihr Beiden, ihr seid richtig gute Segler, immer sicher unterwegs.Sehr gute Seemanschaft.Grüße aus dem verschneiten Deutschland.
Mit eurem Video ist die Kälte viel besser zu ertragen. Thanks
Danke schön 🥰
Wow we’re flying , how fast are we going? 8 knots! 😂 I lost it
That’s rather fast for us ⛵️💨
What an EXCELLENT strategy. You made all the right choices: don't go above 9 knots, use reduced sails during the night, multiple arrangements to avoid friction, like your low friction rings in the sheets, preventers in the boom, pole ready before leaving and the list goes on.... One question is why didn't you use a reefed jib and lower the main to 3rd reef when in 30+ knots, instead of main alone, which would make the boat roll more?
Thank you sir. Good job spotting the low friction rings, they are our favourite. Yes in hindsight we definitely should have reduced to 3rd reef for the evening or even dumped it completely. We were overpowered and rounded up a couple of times in the squall. Lucky we learn this lesson before part 2 of this crossing (next week) where we do exactly that for strong winds, stay tuned. 🤙
@@SailingBeaver Saw the next episode. Quite a passage! Many others have complained about it. Would the alternative route be more confortable, i.e. going south first through the caribbean islands and then turn west? What decided you to go first west and then south?
Thanks, it was a great passage. We preferred to stay north of the coast of Columbia and keep good distance to avoid the acceleration zones around the corner. We are happy with this decision as the winds about 80nm east of us were 40-50kn in the final days.
Cool guys!! Making good progress in what seem a bit of rough sea’s. What are your plans/timing after making it through the cannel? Cheers and a SUPER NEW YEAR 🎉 ⛵️😊
Cheers, after the Canal it will be catching up on our videos out to the Pacific. 😊
Hi guys, great video. I was wondering what's is that "red square" Moving apparatus behind you? On the transom?
Thank you sir. That’s our “Hydrovane”, our wind vane self steering system. Basically a wind powered autopilot. 🤙
Awesome sailing footage. Liked tthe music ya opened up with! Was seasickness a factor at all? This was my favorite episode thus far! Really got a sense off what you guys where up against! Well done & thanx for the share.
Thanks heaps for you kind comment, glad you liked it! Yeah we always get a bit queasy on the first day or 2, specially when you get conditions like this straight away. We usually make up food before we leave for the first 2 days so we don't have to spend much time below, this helps a lot.
You two are natural and enthusiastic sailors. Don't stop in NZ? Circumnavigate....
Thanks mate very kind! Not sure as of yet but it’s on the cards, time will tell! Fair winds 🤙
Nice action. I wondered if you have details on the clamps you used to hold on the solar panels? Does the wiring go inside the tubes? Nice job.
Thanks. The clamps are from NOA.se very handy to rotate panels. We have all our upgrades and modifications including prices and further details in an eBook that can be downloaded from our website that may be helpful. www.sailingbeaver.com/product/bluewatercruiser/
@@SailingBeaver Thanks. I was looking for something like it in the USA though, not Sweden.
Should be available in the US, we found NOA parts in quite a few places in the Caribbean. 🤙
At what point have you had to douse your Bimini to avoid damage?
great video, thank, and bye the way does CZcams supply those graphics on your boom or did you have those made?
Thanks, glad you enjoy. It’s just vinyl stickers. 🤙
@@SailingBeaver were do you get the CZcams Logo sticker at? is my question
A print shop in Martinique, but any online print place will print and send
How does the red steering thing work?
What is the Reason of the Hat on the Beaver ? Agree, Appreciate No Wall to Wall Music. Thanks ! Keeping it Real ! Buene Suerte, Cuidense ! ¿Quién hubiera pensado que un Castor se encontraría con Ballena?
Long story behind the sombrero on the Beaver but there is a connection to Mexico 🇲🇽. Quite a surprise for a Beaver to meet a whale, they almost got to high five 🖐
Excellent video! My dreams and daily thoughts delivered through CZcams. The only thing you could possibly do better is include drone footage...but I understand how difficult they are to get back on the boat.
Cheers glad you enjoy. Yeah it’s always worth the good footage but we are only just getting used to getting the drone up when offshore. It’s rather tricky.
You had to hand steer through the squall. Could not the wind vane manage it ??? Oh you were gibing
Yeah it’s always easier to hand steer for the squall not for the strength of wind but the shift in direction
Hola Friends, Would you share the song from the introduction? Sun Fade of Water is suggested but doesn't match. Many Thanks
Hey your correct that’s the song Sun fade-of water! 🤙
@@SailingBeaver Rad. My bad, it does match. Thanks for confirming. Love that song with your background. Fair Winds,
I hit a whale motoring in calm sea just at dusk. Only a 25 footer but it was pissed and kept hitting the water with its flook . For a few minutes .No damage as we side swiped eachother. But you guys got lucky. You were moving fast.
Yeah for sure it was pretty lucky. Makes ya think how often that happens at night unnoticed or in rough seas making it difficult to see. This guy was just laying on the surface barely moving or diving.
@@SailingBeaver For sure. In australia i had a huge whale breach right in front of me a 40 footer. Maybe 100 feet ahead. I was on the windvane steering so I had no time to do anything but watch it sink under my boat and wait for impact but we missed.
That’s hectic. Just sit tight and hold fast 😬
I notice you wear your harnesses and clip in when on deck. That's good. I see others never wearing them even when going forward to adjust sails in rough weather. Just stupid if you ask me. Those safety lines could one day save your life.
Thank you sir. This is true, it can be quite risky.
Curious to know the origin of the "Beaver" name.. Whats the back story about that? Lovely sail by the way!!
Thank you sir. Long story that one but we did a video back in the a Canaries that explains that. Fair winds. 🤙
I hope that you’re open to some constructive opinions. I only have one to offer you two. Wide Angle Lens would make these good videos great.
Thanks and yeah sure. Although we are pretty wide at 16mm any wider and it’s either a fisheye or super warpy!
what is that red thing on the back of your boat
That my friend is a Hydrovane, a self steering system or windvane. 🤙
@@SailingBeaver neat thanks now im a little smarter
If yAll see Plucky twist his ear
I guess when boaties leave the friends they've made, they shouldn't say see you soon, they should say See you somewhere.
Yeah that’s a good point. We have still yet to see these guys but hopefully somewhere, soon. 😊
What's the name of the starting music ? It's amazing
Sure is. We’ll post it in the description for all the tunes. 🤙
Any one that sail in rough seas and have fun , gets a thumbs up and a subscribe from me..fair winds.
That’s great, welcome aboard sir! 🤙

Slip sliding away.......Fair winds for 2022
Yew, cheers and happy 2022 🤙
You were very lucky not to hit that whale. We T-boned a sperm whale in mid-Pacific in 2020 en route to NZ and lost the boat. Those critters are solid!
Yep super close call, could smell it’s breath! Wow that’s pretty hectic! We read a story in Yachting World that sounds similar was that your cat ?
@@SailingBeaver I was just the mate but yes I wrote the piece in YW. We spent 4 days on a Chinese longliner and another 2 weeks on a Norwegian RORO ship that dropped us in a Auckland. Coulda been worse 😂
Wow what an experience. Yeah was a super interesting story must have been hectic. On a positive note I bet there was some yummy food on the Norwegian Roro.
It's good luck Not to hit a whale with a bolt on keel.

way to long of an intro - had to bail . looking for sailing vids to follow. might check back later.
Yeah man no dramas. Welcome to swing by later sometime, but I doubt the intro will be any shorter…
The sad tendency to attract viewers by overstating the conditions in the name. Had to skip "diagonally" through the length and: guys, you should reserve attributes like "rough crossing" to 3 shrouds snapping mid Pacific in pitch dark while solo on a 9m boat. And I haven't even uttered these words - in respect for those who pitchpole and lose masts or keels. Hysteria over punctured pantyhose better be reserved for the hurricane or tsunami, ha ha.
Firstly the video, title and crossing all speak for themselves as it was simply that a rough crossing and a quick browse through the comments section will confirm that general consensus. What you're referring to with 3 snapped shrouds and a pitchpole is a Disastrous Crossing most likely one resulting from improper maintenance and/or planning. If by any means you think this video is in the category of hysteria then you have clearly spent very little time viewing sailing on youtube. ✌️
@@SailingBeaver A little blasphemous to refer to all yachting incidents as "improper maintenance". My 3 brand new from Florida shrouds snapped a mere 1000nm after having been rigged by James, the Selden approved rigger, while at Shelter Bay marina. Am known as liveaboard (of 75y) who prefers to sail (yes, not stuck to weather windows) rather than watch others do it. What brought my attention to this particular video was the much overstated "rough". Should've been guided by the coastally-sounding "beaver", ha ha.
All jokes aside young man, we thank you for your time and patience expressing your constructive opinions. Hope to see your engagement in some future content, welcome aboard. Btw good luck with sorting out those rigging issues, although Selden has no approved riggers in Panama there is a few in the Caribbean and Bonaire.
@@SailingBeaver Accepting criticisms in good spirit is the way! I think I know the psychology behind your "rough" and mine - I have yet to suffer from seasickness - that fine distinction could sway perception but allows me to enjoy my storm-induced adrenalin. James, the Selden man, was not a hologram, when I was there 3 years back. I have some rough sailing footage but too lazy (and humble?) to post them. Apologies if too harshly worded.
How does the red steering thing work?
The Hydrovane is a mechanical autopilot powered by the wind. We have a more detailed episode that explains its use and instillation here… czcams.com/video/kqZltv29IjI/video.html
@@SailingBeaver be safe out there! Fair winds.
