Who are we? 💁🏼♀️
We're Tom and Iz, who live and travel in our van La Bamba. We love nature and try to spend as much time as possible wild swimming, hiking and being outdoors!
You might find Tom in the forest IDing a mushroom, fixing something or starting an ambitious project with his laid-back relaxed approach whereas you could find Isabel cooking up a storm, sunning herself on a beach and being a busy, energetic bee with her endless enthusiasm and positivity! We are total opposites but it works!
How did we end up here?! 😁 ⏮
We met 10 years ago when we were both finishing our A-levels and had a whirlwind summer romance, hitch-hiking around France together before before going our separate ways to travel and to university. We've both always prioritised travel and adventure and have worked hard over the years in hospitality jobs to enable us to keep exploring.
Tom hitch-hiked across Europe and road tripped around Australia whilst Iz studied Environmental Science at York. Iz backpacked around South America with her sister whilst Tom studied Forestry at Aberdeen University. Little did we know we just weren't going to get each other out of our minds! Fast forward 4 years later, we found ourselves in campsite warden jobs, living in a bell tent in a wild flower meadow together! Maybe without realising this was the start of our van life journey!
Next, we both trained to be science teachers and during training, we bought a van, ripped out it's interior and converted it to live in it. Iz managed to get a remote work-from-home job that she could do from the van and Tom was passionate about starting up a CZcams channel.
Since then we haven't looked back and when the pandemic allowed us to, we travelled to Spain, Portugal, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and around Cornwall. We are now on a big European road trip! We are giving it our best shot to do CZcams full time. We have a dream of one day owning a little plot of land and building ourselves a cabin in the woods. April 29, 2023: What a nightmare when the mosquitoes attack and the itching is out of control. Lovely, coffee break area. My granddaughter since she was probably 10 years old loves charity shops. At 19 years old she still loves the fines in them. Helping others to keep the cost of clothing down is a plus but I watch when with her the excitement Isabelle you have also, Best keep on board Bendryl to some type of itchy cream. Loving the view from the tower in Estonia. Stay well and thanks for including each of us on your journey.

spread vinegar with a cloth on the mosquito bites it helps great. you can repeat as often as necessary it is harmless and very effective
I find jungle juice is the best to ward them mosquitos off
I worked in the Middle East for many years and I woke up one morning to a mosquito sitting on my chest.
It had drunk so much of my blood overnight that it couldn't physically take off.
What a mess it made when I splatted it. Bleuch!
Sudocrem is really good for insect bites, I use it when the odd flea from my cat bites me and it works really well at stopping the itching, swelling and reduces the skin irritation quite quickly.

You should've used OFF repellent sold in every local food shop - it's a proper poison but definetly keeps the mosquitoes away (sometimes even humans haha)

Found out purely by accident during my current camping tour that slathering hand sanitizer on mosquito bites makes a significant improvement in comfort and swelling. I hope this helps somebody else too.

Someone before me mentioned Sudocrem to apply if you get bitten & I would agree, it is good to keep some handy. My friend went on holiday & like Tom came out in big lumps from mosquitos; she had to wear long sleeved tops, nightmare. Mosquito bites on your ankles... ouch .. I had this about 4 years back in Poland
My ankles swelled that much I found it hard to bend my ankle and awkward to walk... Now I wear soaks that cover my ankles what ever the weather 🤣🤣

Perhaps you should try Thermacell mosquito repellent, works great from other van users
I had not heard of it before, I will have to give it a google
Last camping trip we used a thermacell. With it not a single bite on any of 4 people on the trip. With out it we could not stand still as in the video.
The mosquitoes are a pain but there have not been many in my corner of Croatia this year. I have been pestered by deer flies though. Every T shirt has little holes where these flies have cut through the fabric to get at my flesh.
wow that sounds like a savage bit to be able to get through a t-shirt. i guessing they are similar to horse flies in the uk? I dont actually mind mosquitoes in small doses but this was like on a whole other level, haha

Hi guys , my cure for the mosquitoes is to eat lots of garlic everyday, they hate it, take garlic capsules if you don’t like eating it, they won’t come near you after a few days.It worked a treat for me the last time I was in Latvia. Hope it helps.
You need a pack of 'mosquito coils' containing pyrethrin to keep yourself safe from the biters.
I often leave one burning in the entrance of my tent when camping wild. Keeps it free of pests. (Ony do this if your tent is fireproof.)

Vicks vapour rub is great for mosquito bites. To stop getting bitten a repellent high in DEET works best and dark clothing (From someone who has survived deepest darkest malaria ridden east africa)
Hi there, guys! Nice to see you again! For a moment there I thought that you were still in Finland, and I was horrified that you found bad water in that water pump! But you were already in Estonia. Whey!
(Not that you couldn't find bad water in some unkept and forgotten well in Finland, too, but not in the 'grid'.
I was just going to say that the reason you saw so many young people in Tartu (Dorpat to me) was that Dorpat has a very old university - but you had found that out already! The university was established by the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf on June 30, 1632, a little more than four months before his death in the battle of Lützen.

I was wondering- why you don't refill your gas tanks? The adapter is in any bigger hardware store and you can refill it in bigger petrol/gas stations (would save you a ton of money).

When heading south through Poland, (and of course you'll stop in Bialystok please 😁) ..youll get to Lublin , where there is a little known large and daunting concentration camp called Majdanek (pronounced Mydanek almost rhymes with titanic) . Its quite eerie of course. Well worth a visit. Downtown Lublin's quite pretty too.
Adding these places to our maps, love all recommendations we receive. I think we will have to explore a concentration camp, very conscious that vlogging there could be in poor taste, but I think if we were respectful and informative it would be very interesting to see.

I would love to get to the point of not reacting, we are spoilt with no biting insects in Cornwall so my immune system freaks out when when I’m bitten. I don’t mind the odd couple but when you swell up like this 30 bites per ankle is pretty horrible, haha
Just a heads up for future apparently Avon skin so soft doesn’t work as a repellent anymore, from Amazon reviews on it they’ve changed the formula and if no longer stops bugs.
I was going to suggest smidge but you’ve already got I see, from my use in Scotland, smidge stops the bites but doesn’t stop them landing on you, on Skye I used a headnet when it was really bad to keep them off my face but smidge stopped me getting bitten.

Tom needs to pop some Benadryl or other antihistamine to reduce the swelling and allergic reaction to mosquitoes he is having.

Obviously lots of van lifers, currently watching avoidance on bbc iPlayer. Not really into any really good series at the moment though. Tom really enjoys watching a good film but Isabel doesn’t have the attention span

We will have to spend 90 days outside of the Schengen area, lots of the balkans and turkey ext are not in so will have to hang out there a while

That egg smell in the water is Sulphur .
Not dangerous to drink in small quantities but can cause nausea and dehydration in infants .
It dissipates when it mixes with air .
Leave a glass out on the kitchen counter and after a few minutes it won’t smell .
There are carbon filters that take it out if it was your home tap. Obviously you won’t need them .
