Synopsis:
“Jokey” is the common spelling for “jockey” in Vienna around 1870. The term "jockey" for a person who rides in horse races has been in use since the 17th century. Professional equestrian sport was also very popular in Vienna in the 19th century.
The “Jokey-Polka” (fast) is Josef Strauss’s last compositional contribution to the genre of fast polka. The work was probably created during Carnival 1870. The first performance took place on Thursday, March 10, 1870 as part of a promenade concert by the brothers Josef and Eduard Strauss in the “Cur-Salon”.

A few days later, on Sunday, March 13, 1870, in the new large hall of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, visitors were able to attend a "Carneval Revue", the first promenade concert by the brothers Josef and Eduard Strauss with the participation of Johann Strauss, Listen to the “Jokey-Polka” again (quickly). The audience obviously liked the work, because Josef and Eduard Strauss included it on the program on March 17th at a “Carnival Novelties Concert” and on March 23rd at a “Novembers Concert.” Both events took place in the “Cur-Salon” in the city park.
A piano edition and orchestral parts were published in 1870 by Carl Anton Spina's Vienna music publishing house, but only after the unexpected death of Josef Strauss on July 22, 1870.
