I do agree with the interviewee on capitalism. But the interviewer says a few weird things like Bihar people choose to live like that, women leave their husbands because of government support.
This is incredibly stupid. Bihar people don't want to live like that. Women will live in a marriage if their husbands treat them well.
China has improved not just because of capitalist policies, but also because of good governance and changing incentives of bureaucrats, such has getting a promotion because you've increased GDP per capita, building infrastructure etc. Yes China got rid of Unions, but they also substituted that with good infrastructure in education and health for more and more people to move up the social ladder.
China didn't implement what Friedman espoused by the letter. They did things which seemed pragmatic. They still have large state owned companies but also has incredibly big private companies.
India similarly needs to understand what works for itself and not copy paste what some bearded German (Marx) said a couple of centuries back, or what an American Nobel laureate said decided back.
Yes we should read them, but do whatever works to improve GDP per capita, and infrastructure. That could be getting rid of Unions, but also having stricter policies for companies to not discriminate against women and lower caste.
