  • This exercise is a great way to re-centre yourself and bring you back to your body (and the present moment) when things are a little bit anxious and "UP." The act of conscious touch and gently squeezing your upper body can be very containing, and provide a sense of "here I am!"
    It's also a great exercise to do when you just need a break: it'll help you notice your breath, and the present moment. Enjoy!

    QUICK HISTORY: I originally made this video for my online students, but it's SO potent and powerful that I had to share it with you. It's inspired by the work I've done with Peter Levine, the founder of the body work somatic healing therapy, Somatic Experiencing. Peter writes about this powerful exercise in his book, In An Unspoken Voice.

    I am very familiar with this technique! This is the Triple Warmer/Spleen Hug, that Donna Eden from Eden Energy Medicine has been teaching for decades! One hand is over one of the T.W. point on the upper arm, the other is on a Spleen point under the arm. It calms the Triple Warmer, the meridian governing the fight, flight or freeze response while the Spleen meridian boosts our immune system, increase our vitality and acts as a nurturing mother. What fun to see this exercise crossing over various approaches!

    I've done this before but didn't focus on the feelings. This time i did and felt like the kid whose mom finally touched him! Thank you. BTW, jin shin jyutsu has some easy, quick techniques for worry, fear, anger and feeling alone. They are holding your thumb, index, middle, ring and little finger for 2 or more minutes with the same receptivity used with hug.

    At first, produced tension in my body because it took so much effort to keep my hands in position. Then I tried placing my hands inside my shirt, skin on skin. That was magic! Both because the hands stopped slipping, and also that direct contact produced such soothing energy and safety. It’s subtle, but very supportive.

    This is helpful and really works! I found..now I am past my worst anxiety..that it was really my body trying to tell me things! I was with the wrong people..trying to be in the wrong place and doing the wrong thing. Anxiety is your body talking to you. Pay attention and Listen. Something is Wrong! It can be more than just your thought process.

    As soon as I put my left hand on my shoulder, I started to tear up. I felt so safe and held, and the sadness just came out. But when I paused the video and got back into position, I had a hard time feeling my body again. My brain started running (In quiet moments, I have songs running through my head.), and I couldn't reconnect with myself. I restarted the video, got back into position, and I could feel again. I would have thought that having someone talking in the background would stop my connection to self, but it seems to have been the opposite. I am not well-regulated and have terror at the thought of connecting to myself, so maybe that little bit of distraction away from 100% focus on myself is what I needed.

    • @teamlyon3109
      @teamlyon3109 Před 3 lety +3

      Hi Brooke, Seth here from Team Lyon. It may be that yes, a bit of distraction is helpful, or, it may actually be that the reason it feels better to have someone talking is because it is sparking up your social engagement system, which is helping you feel safer. Either way, just keep following your impulses and exploring!

      @brookekrovic7739 I had the same experience of immediately tearing up! I noticed that I tightened up my throat to keep from crying. This is a common experience with me, as I really don't like to cry at all. I usually don't feel better when I do in fact, it makes me feel worse.
      My mind also keeps running all the time, if not with thoughts then with a song, or music.
      As I stayed with it longer, though, I noticed that I felt calmer, and I began to sway back and forth, as if my body was regulating and calming itself with the movement.
      I'm not very well-regulated, either! Perhaps practicing this exercise would help me the more I do it.

    Irene, i'm not sure if you are moderating the comments on this video anymore, but i wondered about something... I first came across this calming exercise with a video I watched with Peter Levine being interviewed about safety and trust and feeling anxious. I tried it, and promptly burst into tears. After a few minutes, the tears passed and i started yawning. I tried the exercise again a few days later and had the exact same response. Now, as I try it with you, I am having the same reaction. What is that?! My sense its that its supposed to calm me... but it seems to be a release point of some kind and i'd love to understand a little more about it!!! Thank you for all that you do. Kristin

    • @IreneLyon
      @IreneLyon  Před 6 lety +10

      Hi Kristin
      Yawning can be a few things .. but it is mostly a sign that the parasympathetic nervous system is coming online ... yawning is calming right? So that is what is happening. You can try lessening the grip and doing a little less and stopping before you feel the yawn. The other common thing that can be happening when someone always yawns is that it is a thwarted anger response ... and the body defaults to yawning because it is safer than expressing big lifeforce energy.
      If you haven't taken in my other resources, or tried out my online programs, I would highly recommend them as these will help you dip into a greater process of self study of the nervous system and what might need to be shifted, or released, and integrated. Take care, Irene.

      Suzychocolate - Mara here with Team Lyon. When feeling or sensation is dulled, it may mean that one's nervous system is in freeze. Starting with vagus nerve exercises may not be the right approach. In Irene's teachings, she starts with the basics so you understand how the nervous system works, and the combination of that education plus practices that you do every day can help rebuild the capacity to feel. It takes time, and sometimes takes work with skillful practitoners. Start with this video series: irenelyon.com/healing-trauma-freeresources/

      @IreneLyon  Před 5 lety +4

      That's cool to hear that it did help you notice some other feelings. Sometimes that can be good insight into something different and lead us to something new :)
      I will speak from personal experience - when I cross my arms this way it creates more activation for me too (I'm assuming because of some trauma I have to my one arm). But if I put the other arm on top it's more calming. It may not match what the reasoning is behind the practice from a Jin Shin Jyutsu perspective, but it changed the experience for me!
      Might be worth exploring for yourself. What can you do that creates a feeling of less panic in your system?

    I need advice for a cliënt who has so much hate and disgust towards her body that I can't get her into any body awareness exercise. She understands theoretically that her emotions are stored there and that it will be necessary to face them in order to progress. But the resistance is just such a blockage. I wonder if it is just a question of time or if there is something that I can do to help her with that

    • @IreneLyon
      @IreneLyon  Před 11 měsíci

      @wilma8326, Jen here from Team Lyon. Advising how to work with clients is beyond the scope of what we do here. Speaking very generally, I can offer is that attunement is what ultimately heals (including attunement to self). If someone doesn't want to go into their body, you might consider working in other ways for the time being. Another point of education is that often when someone feels hate or disgust towards themselves, these feelings likely initially stemmed from healthy responses that the person internalized when it wasn't safe to express them outwardly. Hmmmm....It feels uncomfortable to do it the way you said. I can more easily reach and hold myself if I do it the other way round, i.e. left hand on right chest etc. But I'm not sure I find it relaxing or containing, I can't focus on my body enough.

      Hi Uta, Jen here from Team Lyon. Every individual (and nervous system) is unique, so these practices will land differently in different people and at different times. Tuning into your experience and following your impulses are two foundational principles in this work, so I invite you to adapt the practice to see it there's a way to do it that feels more supportive to your system.
      You can also do this (or a version of this) practice without focusing much on your body. For example, you might hold one arm with the opposite hand and allow your attention to notice the space your in, or the texture of your clothing.

    Where Peter Levine introduces those positions in a video, I thought: This is like JIN SHIN JYUTSU!!! (?)
    Thank you, Irene, for giving it the credit it deserves!
    I have been using JSJ since 2011 - the whole shebang with the meridian hand positions as well as the grand central to give myself energy that helped to get out of the burnout - and I would say this certainly helped me with anxiety and shyness. I used to be so shy and anxious. If one takes it further, using the bladder and kidney meridian hand positions every day for a while, one will certainly notice a shift.
    Also when I felt depressed it helped me doing certain hand positions. Using our hands is what we have at our disposal wherever we are at any time. It is only natural, right? When we bang our head, what do our hands do automatically? When we have lower back pain, where do our hands go (actually a JSJ hand position too)
    Therefore I am a big fan of hand positions/ JSJ since I know they have a very powerful impact on us.

      Perla Margarita I am very sorry to hear that you have been through traumas and havent met sisters or brothers who could show you God's real love and beauty shining through them. It looks like youre angry with God-but as per definition God IS love He doesnt give traumas...its people' bad desicions(sins) and this worlds fallen nature that brings the suffering. That's the price for our free will (how else could we decide to do good or love someone). That's why He sent His Son to this suffering world to show us how to live, to help His children who are deceived by the spirit of death. Jesus's resurrection showd us that death has not the last word-and that the life after death is much more important than this handicapped life since it will last forever either in the presence of perfect joy within God or the absence of it. God wants the best for his children but noone is forced to believe, however we have all a limited time to make the decision. It's like with human love you dont want someone to force to love you-this would not be called love then. If you're open to it and want to give Him one last chance, go for ONE month, ONE x per week for a whole hour into an adoration chapel (or ask what time the Holy Adoration hour takes place) and tell Jesus openly everything you wrote here in the comment and tell Him how you feel and then just wait and listen for His answer in silence. However you decide I wish you all the best, lots of hope, strength and courage to never give up or settle with short term happiness but to always seek true fullfilling love (this sometimes means to make hard decisions and go the path that looks narrow and uncomfortable).
      Maybe you can find here some inputs
