Baker street, Gerry Rafferty 1977 gets a HOT guitar makeover! You've never heard it like this!

- Everyone (over 40) knows this song. It's one of the few that actually used a really good horn line and avoided sounding dated even 44 years later. Gerry Rafferty was still rolling in the dough from this one song until he died in 2011.
I am giving it the guitar solo makeover it needs. Adding some serious grit to what was a soft rock staple on FM radio since the 70's, and as usual, making it an instrumental. I still have memories of this song's intro being played on 'record store album advertisements' on late night TV in 1977. I was watching Saturday night live while babysitting my neighbours’ kids. Funny how some musical memories never go away. That horn line is one serious HOOK!
Good news! Not everyone on Earth has been assimilated by the body snatcher pod plants. Watch the guy at 0:37 dance a little jig as he walks past with his girlfriend. Well done! Stay human as long as you can!

1) Street playing is not all fun and games and dancing kids. Doing this for 7 years. I regularly face not only verbal abuse, but physical assault as I work a few blocks from downtown eastside Vancouver. I'm surrounded by addicts, drunks, and people who should be in mental homes.
2) I'm unemployed. All live music including busking, is banned. I lost all work last year and received ZERO compensation. I had a very bad year in 2020 and only recently came out of a depression.
3) I make ZERO from youtube no matter how many views I get. I was demonetized by Google years ago as part of their culling of small accounts. Class action lawsuit was initiated. I don't run ads. And more importantly, even if I did, most of my videos are instantly copyrighted and auto monetized by record labels because they are COVERS. If you see an ad, it's the record label collecting. If you liked the performance, please think about supporting me on patreon/paypal tip/bandcamp.
4) I'm a musician that writes his own music for 20 years. Check out my bandcamp page to see what I can really do with a guitar. 500 albums of original instrumentals.
5) It's a lot of unpaid work to post these videos all the time so please try to help me keep the channel going. Many thanks to those that have supported me! It means a lot!
6) I get asked this 100 times a day so here's the answer: I play on the street and not in a band because all the clubs closed years ago. I used to lead many bands from 2006 to 2018. That's all gone. It's also a lot more hassle, and less money, to run a band than play by myself.
7) I get asked this 100 times a day. "Why don't you try a better spot?" THIS is the best spot. How do I know? I've tried all of them. This spot is even better than Granville Island which is all tourists. Vancouver does not have many spots to play. Maybe 3-4 downtown. I have to go where traffic is heaviest or you make no money. Playing on beaches and parks or near homes, condos, apt buildings, is forbidden. This is the main transit hub of trains/seabus and also walkway for the convention centre as well as heavily touristed gastown.

One human in the matrix... Courage man!
Always a treat to see... Show yourselves, humans!!!
Awesome job, Robin! 👏
I've always loved this song! 🎸🎷
*Gerald Rafferty was a Scottish rock singer-songwriter. His solo hits in the late 1970s included "Baker Street", "Right Down the Line" and "Night Owl", as well as "Stuck in the Middle with You", which was recorded with the band Stealers Wheel in 1973.
Born: April 16, 1947, Paisley, UK
Died: January 4, 2011, Stroud, UK
Very sadly, it states that he died of alcoholism and liver failure. 😕
May you be Resting In Peace, Gerry
I remember walking along Baker Street, London, when this was a major hit. Great song, R.I.P. Gerry. 🙏
God the Dear old Brtitania has really changed since then, 21stC London changed more, always keep the romantic notion & mystique, lived off Euston Rd, love old stations St pans & Kings, All changed, loved graffiti in Kings, Better stop, even half doz live gigs within mile, Ahh, oh Russel Sq.
I know it's quite randomly asking but does anybody know a good site to watch newly released tv shows online?
@Dakari Jamari Try Flixzone. Just google for it =)
@London Damari definitely, I've been watching on Flixzone for since april myself =)
@London Damari Thank you, signed up and it seems to work :) I appreciate it!
Multiple walk by crimes being committed in this one.
No lie guitar guy.
I'm afraid Gerry Rafferty isn't doing any, "rolling in the dough". He died in 2011. Rest in Peace. Thanks for bringing his wonderful song writing to a wider audience.
Wasn’t aware. Changed description. Thanks.
@@shatnershairpiece Yep, literally drank himself to death......
@@johnnyappleseed5029 What a terrible shame. There must have been a reason behind this tragedy.
@@sharonrebibo6015 Extremely sad. Saw a documentary about him a few years ago but I don't remember what drove it.
I do remember there being controversy over who wrote the horn part for this song though
His Wikipedia details his life and demise pretty well
Waiting for the song to end so I can go into my house. Anyone else out there wait for Baker Street to end before turning off the car?
Yep, I've never turned off this song and never will. Gotta listen to the whole song,if you got a pulse..
@DewdropN man do i miss the good music, the 70's were the best. Imo.😎 I'm so glad to be able to relive it thru you tube. ROCK ON!!
@thomas Babcock & @dewdropN - agree with the conversation - I enjoy the reaction videos where "young" people are discovering the music from yesteryear. I could never play an instrument or carry a tune in a bucket, but I could crank it up and head on down the highway - I just discovered Robin's channel about two weeks ago - and have enjoyed it a lot - look forward to more of his creative interpretations and the interactions he has with the people of Vancouver
@DewdropN Lol.😂
@@botabob I play the hell out of my air guitar..just learning the air drums now, they're much harder..
Ehem, I'm no where near 40😜 and I know Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty. It's one of my 'winning the lottery' or 'I managed to break free from society' celebratory tunes. What a legendary song!💚
Maybe that's why I've always liked this tune... It's about those special celebratory moments in life. And cheers to breaking free from society (which hasn't had much to offer for quite some time)! 😂
From the first time I heard this song in 1978 (16 yo) until now 2021 (58yo) I consider this this the greatest rock song ever written.
I'm 42 years old, I was raised on a lot of the tunes you play, thank you for the memories!💗 Rock On! 💗
This channel is so cool
One of the best.
Brilliant tribute to the great Gerry Rafferty, who fought his demons, left us much too soon, and yearning for more of his beautiful music.
Omg Rafferty! Love the way you make it your own! Miss the days when everyone loved good music and people got up to move!
Love it. Sad that he passed in 2011 but I’m sure he’d approve. Keep’m coming.
I could not just walk by you while your playing. I would stop, listen and tip you well.
thank you very much. You can still tip by checking out my PayPal link or downloading some of my original music. I make absolutely nothing from these CZcams videos.
In 1980 when I was 10, Gerry Rafferty was one of my inspirations to pick a guitar up after listening to my older brothers collection of this GREAT song writer and musician.....
Variations on a theme by Rafferty. Classic. If I had a job I'd donate.
Gerry would've loved your rendition. I was living in West Germany when this album came out and I, along with the German's, loved it. Thanks man, you really took me back. I danced with my German girlfriend Melanie to this song. Probably the most beautiful woman I've ever had the pleasure to keep company with. She reminded me of Liz Taylor in Cleopatra. Those mesmerizing blueish eyes, almost purple. She was a goddess.
She has probably had a few songs dedicated to her in her time.
Gerry is smiling Guaranteed!😊😁 Thank you Captain. Very well done. I've only seen 1 band attempt do this song. They nailed it and so did you..😎
Love that tune... what a memorable collection of sounds.
I always loved this song 1977 heading up to fla on spring break this song was on the radio and the sun was shinning and dreams of girls on the beach .
That's great cuz Gerry Rafferty originally played that sax Riff on the guitar. You sound great as usual my friend!
How can you possibly walk pass such a classic ? Really ! I'd have my eyes shut and watch every note go by !
Just got to say. When life gets back to normal and live music is allowed again you’re definitely getting my five bucks.
This has got to be the single most amazing cover of this song Ive ever heard. The sax part played on guitar is perfect. Amazing.
They walk passed because they're unaware of the present, its muso's like this that remind us of the present, thanks man, I love your work.
Unaware of the present ( me playing) and the past (1977, when song came out)
It's an absolute shame that not one person left you something. Excellent take on a beautiful song!
normal day in Vancouver.
Aw yeah! I missed this...Not many people in my area know this even if they are over 50s...
I love how you play the 'older' songs in your own renditions...I always need a reminder of the good songs since many of the newer songs nowadays just seems to go on a 'repeat' mode...making me go a little loco....
Yup. This channel is very different in that way. That's the draw for me and keeps me coming back. A lot of guitar guys on CZcams do straight covers with very little improv, displaying technical skills (And good for them for being able to do that). This song is particularly tough because it is so iconic for both sax and guitar parts. Robin's rendition pays homage while also scorching the hell out of this tune!!
@@MyNameIsMach thanks. You nailed it. There are way too many so called ‘teaching’ channels of guys in their bedrooms copying solos, and teaching those bad habits to new guitar players. If I was CZcams, I’d ban every one of them . They’re a scourge and totally anti music. Why copy? No one is ever going to listen to your copy over the original and it’s already been done. If you can’t do your own thing, you shouldn’t even be playing guitar.
@@shatnershairpiece -You are an excellent instrumentalist. Don't be too tough on those below. Everyone has their own 'shtick' in life. Yours happens to be a talent so rare, a blessing, as to be above many others.
If I may, a word to the wise,... {learned from experience} ; Careful not to make a habit of abuse. The 'heights' cannot exist without valleys between ;}
Bearded guy was almost caught in the moment! Girlfriend tugging his hand, "Come onnn! Macy's is just up here!" lol Great stuff, Thanks!
Gerry Rafferty would be very proud....Congrats!!
The tone is amazing as usual. Great work, shame nobody there seems to appreciate it....😒
People never realized you were melting the street with this tune!! Great use of your fingers for picking!! I lived in southern Mexico at the time and the rock lovers were really getting into this one. Thanks for the memories!! Music is the stimulator of wonderful memories we had.
Yet another wonderful and unique interpretation of a classic rock song, this is superb and deserves to be broadcast everywhere, many Gerry Rafferty fans would really appreciate this. Thank you for your playing.
Be still for a moment people...and appreciate this music!
After 4 am here. I have to put on the headphones for this one!
This song reminds me of being a kid.
me too. takes me back to being 15.
This rendition is SO AWESOME ! 👍😊🎶 Thank you, Mr SHP ! 😁
Showing my age, but I'd only just started high school when this song was released...... 😉
M 🦘🏏😎
My parents had this g. r. album i think that one was on 8 track! It reminds me og growing up in the mountains of Arizona, and i would play dress up and dance on our picnic table in front of a 3'×2' amplifier speaker! Most of our music was on vinyl. 10 albums stacked on the panasonic. But this was an often played track. What another great video...all the world is a stage. Thank you again. Pray for stimulus checks for us because i really want to send you some money!
What a wonderful memory man. Hold on to it 😊
Summer in South Lake Tahoe! Myself and 15 other wastrels dancing to this on the beach! 🤗🤗🤗 Thanks for triggering that memory!
that was the bomb man! I grew up, my godfather owned a bar, yes actually was on Baker St. That song was #1 on his juke box for like 5 years.....peace.....
I've been listening from Kotzebue Alaska, above the Arctic Circle
The sun should be rising any day now. Cheers
-Arctic Circle. Migrating North daily. No, Not global warming. Angle of exposure to the Sun involved. Will take a long time to reverse that angle, contrary to political 'superstition' ;}
My brother used to d.j. at K.O.T.Z,in Kotzebue
@@jeffmiller1594 Cool! When I was a kid, we had no radio station except for what we pulled in on shortwave from other places. Dad had a homemade antenna on top the house, a copper wire between two poles on top the house with glass insulators at each end and a wire running into the house. Dad had an old Transoceanic radio and we got Russian stations and all. What was your brother's name or handle?
Hello. There is something weirdly cathartic about watching you pour your heart and soul out in front of the rest of us, the public, so very artfully... and no one bats a fucking eye. For me, It is a confirmation that the lack of recognition of me, in my field, my world, my work, does not reflect on the merit of my worth or skill. Thank you. You rock. I am really enjoying your videos, daily.
Where was your friendly neighborhood harp player when you needed him to be the horn section?
Beautiful job with "Baker Street".......that one really does put me in the time machine, thanks for the ride.
Wow niceintro bro goodluck
It's like you're in a different time zone from Joe public...!
VERY TRUE!
Yes. Different year zone. 1977. Maybe thats why no one hears it.
@@shatnershairpiece I was 17 then... If only we could go back...!
@@akasa231 don't we all brother.
@@akasa231 I barely made pass 17 the first time! Teen madness and all! But, yes, the air itself smelled sweet then.
Perfect soaring melody for the open highway, with a "sky on fire" sunset to contemplate as the twilight miles unfold. Amazing to learn that Gerry Rafferty prospered for life on the back of this single hit, which I remember well from the time "Baker Street" enjoyed major airplay, way back when pterodactyls ruled the skies, it seems now looking back.
Hey ! I resemble that remark !
"The Windmills of Your Mind" is still timeless as well and also "Where Do You Go To My Lovely". Two songs which stood on their own as achievements for their singers and creators. Paradoxically, they are also very much period pieces - all three.
Love, love, love this tune! Good thing I don't live there I'd get nothing done.
Whao, awesome version of Bakerstreet 😲, i love it ,😨 thx dude for the great guitar sound and greetings from the dutch lowlands NL 😷
Outstanding!!! I'm glad to see at least one person wasn't a mindless zombie!
When I was a kid, listening to this song, I would close my eyes and let the music take me to places in the mind. As l listened and watched you, I closed my eyes again and this time, your guitar took me to places in my mind, once again. Thank you. I have no money, so I offer you prayers for God's blessings.
At least the one guy (and the pigeon) were dancing. One of my favourite tunes! Damn you're good.
You made a very lively version, had to watch it several times. The guitar's controlled screams and then cool down tune in the same song, it's pure beauty!
50,000 fans ought to show up at the station one day
I’d be happy with 5.
Nice rendition of one of my favourite songs ,guitar playing as usual out of this world,we dig it Mr Shatner
Used to have such a great sound system in my truck that I would take my Rafferty out to listen!
Wonderful!
One of my all time favorites and you did it proud!
This is one of my favorite songs! It has always been on my 70's playlist of MP3s. And on cassette tape before that! You do the song justice, sir. Thank you! (When I grow up, I want to be you!)
Driving in the summer, at night, windows down, radio blasting ... great tune for that. Watch your speed... you might transcend a bit.
Reminds me how much Miami Vice's moody driving sequences depended on such tunes.
Thanks and well played!
You are amazing. Greetings from Bavaria
So good could listen all day .I saw a little dance move passing by in blue shorts COOL. keep playing
This version so rocks -- well done!
I try to take all soft rock classics and heat them up.
Nice to see guy walking by movin and a grovin 😊
I wonder where crazy yelling guy is? Happily no where around you. Crazy people.😱😱😱😱😱😱 Still trying to get to the Riverwalk here and record under one of the bridges. Music is a bridge to creativity and expression. How wonderful to be a part of it. From playing to dancing and everything in between. 👍💓👍💓👍
Blown away my friend. That was just masterful. No words to describe how much I like what you did with that. I graduated from high school in 1977. This took me back there, but took me to another place in the process. Wow.
Didn’t even need the sax! OMG! That’s great!
Well done baker street!
Got to say that was as good as it gets.....Baker Street is one of my favorites. Didn't need no horns, the blistering guitar (and you) did its job! Outstanding....
My school`s graduation year.Great music and great musicians still alive and acting...Thanks for the journey in time, Robin. Each and every note is on the place as usual!
Brilliant take on this beloved classic.
You definitely have the ability of making people feel human and creative again, touching the old gameposts in a different and inspired way. Brilliant.💙
thanks. it’s interesting that only on CZcams do I get a reaction. It points out a couple things. One, when things are happening in real time people don’t seem to notice them and two, only seeing things on the screen makes things real for many people. it’s like if I was simulcasting while I was playing on the street, people would probably rather watch it on their phones as they are walking by instead of looking at me.
@@shatnershairpiece Its the one step removed syndrome. Unfortunately a lot of opportunities can be lost like this when people have an imaginary glass screen up between themselves and reality.
(I'm not saying it hasn't happened to me, but in my case music would definitely break through the glass.)💙
Not being musically talented I have huge appreciation for what you are able to do.
Wow what a Thrill to be reminded of this song, I had sort forgotten about it. Still remember the lyrics, but never was a huge fan of soft rock. Your version put some Serious meat on the bones !!
Look like the locals don't appreciate great 🎶...
Man! You never disappoint! Fabulous version of a classic. You make that Fly soar...
Are you trying to outdo YOU?............you succeeded! Puc
Thanks for this...possibly my most favourite song ever
Can only assume the passers by can’t hear the same awesome sound
Great song and great playing of the song!
Supercharged! 🤩
OUTSTANDING
Love how you made it your own and gave the feel of the original. Excellent.
Wow... finest elaboration ever of this classic🔝🎯 what tone 👌
Thanks a lot!
I can’t understand how people can just walk on by !!!
Set the way back machine mr Sherman, 1977 please. I’d go in a heartbeat. Good times brother and you brought them back with this rendition, sweet sounds! Thank you!
I love this song. I remember where I was when I first heard it. It is such a good memory. I bought the album.
If I was walking by when you played that I would have to stop and camp out on the sidewalk for a while. Or anything you played. I love electric guitar.
OMG...you're so talented! Thank you for sharing your gift with us.Keep em' comin' !!!
That was awesome my friend! Thanks for playing your fingers to the bone for us. We love it. Hope you keep it going, I'll be listening and watching.
As expected, you nailed this one chief. Your talent is exemplary. Your patience, manners & commitment are rare qualities. You're a true gentleman. Good luck chief. Best regards (from Baghdad, Iraq)
appreciate it!
Its amazing people at like he is not even there
This is the best guitar I've ever heard. Im a big fan I watch you all the time move to Austin where you will be appreciated
Dude, your song selection is stellar!!
If you're taking requests, please do Right down the line...😁😁😁😁
You know us guys on CZcams appreciate alot more than the mindless passersby....
thanks. what would you think of a tip system? You request a song, and then I’ll see if I can put it up. I’m getting odd requests for some obscure songs/bands that I know will not get many views, but I may be willing to do it if I actually get tips for it. keep in mind that I am not getting any money out of CZcams. I do all this for free, and it’s a lot of work.
Brilliant rendition.
I love this song and bought the album when it was released originally. You did it justice as well! Thanks...
Im 26 and i adore this kind of music, soothing, has soul. Keep it going Mate!
wanna hear you play some rush..
LOVE THIS!! Man I’m wet!! Lol I miss all these songs you do. I miss the times. As hard as they could be back then, nothing like now. Thanks for taking me back
Brilliant interpretation of a classic! Nicely done!
Still a great song after all those years and you colored it in amazingly with you guitar!
Great job Robin!

Thanks my favorite song 👌
Warming and relaxing too.

Good one hey..you bet it was. Awesome cover. I turned up the volume a tad for some brain compression.
