- Ignore the lame commentary, I was very excited about running up and running it around for the first time. It took forever to scratch build to this point with the gear reduction system.

It's cool , and with wings and covered it will be awesome ,that's a wicked engine too
It lets me swing a much larger prop. This 31" prop is scale according to the 3 view drawings I have. It is 24 pitch and only turns 2,900 rpms
Doing a rough aerodynamic calculation it looks doubtful that it flies in that configuration but cabin air circulation is certainly no problem. A very impressive project to this point. Nice work.
And no, working metal is actually easy if you have the tools and equipment.

Mate I think you missed a few steps in the construction booklet. Lol. Seriously though, nice effort, am thinking to try this with a Royal P-38 kit I have been waiting to build.
I may try a 2cyl w same reduction and a huge solo prop. Whenever I can find a couple thousand bucks laying around. And thats just the drivetrain..
Well, the gas engines do not spit that much out. I will probably take some 4" wide masking tape and cover back to the cockpit. I need about 5-7 good days working on it to finish it.
I really like the way the big Hawk flies on RealFlight. It has almost vertical aerobatic power, and a lot of control surface, and its stall is almost non-existent. Try flying it high alpha, the next time you fly on RealFlight. This is a really nice biplane configuration for fast fighter flying, or blasting barnstorming.
No, still not finished. Even though I started this project 5 or 6 years ago, I only have about 18months work in it. I am very close to starting to cover and finish it.

Congrats. That is exactly what I dream of doing w a P-51 some day, a prop that is correct scale size. It seems nobody can build one. Is the reduction gear avaiilable or did you make it yourself?
This isn't your normal rc engine. It uses normal gas, not like the nitro engines!
