John Moses Browning's Amazing Remington Model 8 Semi-Auto Rifle

- Recently on TFB, we ran a photo of my Model 8 as the "photo of the day". I must say that I was quite surprised at the amount of people who had never seen, or even heard of this incredibly important and revolutionary firearm. The Remington Model 8 was one of the first successful semi-automatic rifle designs to be built from the ground up as a commercial firearm. Not only that, but it was arguably more advanced than most previous military attempts at a self loader. Browning's genius shows in this firearm, and shooting one is a great experience.

Wish they would start remaking them in more modern calibers!!
Amen sir.
Then it wouldn't be a model 8 with modern caliber
35 Remington for me is sufficient. It’s common, it’s fast, it’s powerful
Bradley Beast
Common how?? Hornady seems to be the only maker
@@trevorslinkard31 I just bought some core lokt .35 rem.
2:41 the casing landed straight up on his hat
Campbell Homer extreme water bottle flipping
Everything about this rifle is so damn cool especially seeing that action in slow mo. Gotta love just about anything John Browning designed.
The Browning A5 in rifle form.
12gaugebleachdrinker I don't have a b a5, I have a blazer f16.
I it really that hard to disassemble the a5?
came back instantly after watching "the highwaymen"
Same with the Colt Monitor.
A law enforcement agency I worked for many years ago had many of these in their armory, in .35 Remington. Their main use was during deer season. This was the only place I ever worked that kept and issued collectibles to its deputies. There were also "humpback" autoloading shotguns, and Colt Police Positive revolvers, along with several Reising submachine guns. We qualified with them each year, if the safe combination was at hand. I believe they are all gone now.
Did the Model 8s have a rear range adjustable Lyman sight?
@@Minong_Manitou_Mishepeshu can you still get those?
@@Turbodiabetes Tang sights? Williams gunsight in Michigan sells some. Lyman and Marbles can be found on EBay and gunbroker.com.
Sounds like something that would happen with Andy Griffith at Mayberry RFD. Hand out guns to the locals for hunting season, then get returned at the end.
Gotta love the work of John Moses Browning a great inventor and a great man!
That's SAINT Browning to you, sir. He's our prophet of the Church of 1911.
I chuckled, Amen to that
amen
Well well well the manly president of usa is back
You know, I remember thinking to myself when I got my Auto-5
"Well this was made in 1905! Why didn't they ever make a rifle with this design?"
I guess I got my answer.
It looks like a vintage early 20th century american sporting version of an SKS
+uomosenzanomo Eh, not sure I see it. That said, these were also produced in Europe as the FN 1900.
For those who have this rifle, IV8888 did a piece on this (and model 81, what I have), and they used stripper clips for a 6.5 Mauser M 96. With taking off two guide bumps, works great. I got 20 for $12.
I've used the brass stripper too but mine had 3 bumps, or dog ear guides on each side. Worked great for my .35.
How about for a 30-30 rem??
Must have seemed like a miracle when it first came out. At that time there were still a good number of men around who had fought a war with muzzle-loaders. Makes you wonder what those old-timers thought of how much things had changed.
2:42 look at his hat
I was about to say the same thing! The brass is doing gymnastics coming out of that action, and that one stuck the landing perfectly!
It does seem to have a rather unfortunate ejection pattern though. The brass is basically getting kicked up and slightly backwards, causing them to hit the shooter in the head/face/torso. My father has a Model 8 and you really don't want to fire it without a baseball cap and eye protection.
**B O I N G*
Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.
My brothers and I have more than a dozen Model 8s and Model 81s, with examples in all five chamberings (25 Rem, 30 Rem, 32 Rem, 35 Rem, and 300 Savage). They are a joy to shoot. The few that did seem to be slamming a bit were taken to a wonderful old gunsmith (sadly, now passed) about 25 years ago, and he made custom barrel springs for them. At this point, I am convinced that the examples out there that are accused of heavy recoil have worn out springs. It would be interesting to get someone like Wolff to make spring kits for these, so folks could see just how soft a long recoil action can be!
02:41 for the spent case doing a headstand on the hat brim.
A really neat gun. The Mod. 8 was the first "old"gun I got to shoot and, in .35, thumped us like a mule!!!!! The version I shot had a cresent buttplate that really intensified the experience. It was built like a tank, reliable, and accurate until the recoil started getting to us.
nice to see every gun blogger has a constant garand thumb, makes it all the more authentic
Love my model 8, just wish there was more 25 Remington ammo for sale.
Found one of these @ LGS in .35Rem. Now one of the most treasured pieces in my collection.
Man I miss this guy
I just reciently sold my Model from 1942 in 300 savage it was a great rifle !!!
I had one of these rifles in .35 rem. in 1976 when I was in the army at fort Bliss Texas. It kicked and I wish I had kept it.
Why hasn't anyone 3D printed stripper clips for these guns? Hint. Hint...
It's what I do!
I just use Springfield M1903 stripper clips for my 35 Rem model.
I use Bronzefill PLA by ColorFABB. Seems to be the most popular among the shooters needing clips.
+dog bles ameriga There are 3D printers that can now print metal components. The left wing is going nuts over untrackable gun parts.
cause no one owns a 3d printer and that would be unreliable. tho it wouldn't be a bad idea to just make some outta metal but not sell em for 400× what they are worth
Microzombie the left goes nuts over guns in general
these are some of the only rifles that actually literally leave me with a bruised shoulder
It does leave a hot spot on your shoulder when using 200 grain bull nose rounds, 150 grain core lock not as much as I own one an shoot it every now and then.
I almost wanted one until I seen you shoot one. It throws brass in your face! Heck, I still want one
Quickly becoming my favorite channel
300 Savage would be sweet. Don’t rest the forearm on a solid surface for an accuracy test.
nice gun thanks for sharing it with us.
0:38 Alex’s voice glitched.
I have my great grandfathers model 8 in 30 rem. Was their regular hunting rifle. What a cool rifle.
I love this gun thanks for showing it.
2:41 I love how that shell landed perfectly on your hat. 😂😂😂
Do a video on the Browning Auto 5!!!!
That action is extremely cool.
my uncle used to deer hunt with this gun did not know it was a take down rifle thanks for the info!
excellent presentation. straight to the point.
from a historical perspective, "what is old, is new again". Law enforcement using a semi-automatic .30 caliber rifle, what a novel concept. LOL
2:41 the way that empty shell just landed on his hat and stood up for a second looked funny and also awesome how it did that
I have had to reload the 30 remington for my Remington Model 14 and 141. Been doing this for years. I do have one vintage box, but that's more for collecting than shooting. Thanks for the video, and keep that hat on when you're shooting this beast!
Great video. Super educational.
I just think it's an amazing piece of history.
Those long recoil systems are awesome
you definitely need to do a run and Gun with this rifle I am a big fan of the model 8 I own one 25 Remington just a fun gun to play with on occasion.
I enjoy your videos keep up the good work.
Frank Hamers favorite in 25 Rem & given as gift by Remington .30 Cal however the 25 Rem was used in head shots both Bonnie & Clyde. Well made presentation !
Muy buen rifle, y fácil de desarmar, excelente calibre el Remington modelo 8 cal .30 y .35 Remington..!! No cabe duda, que John Moses Browning, era el mejor armero..!!
I have one in .30 Remington. shoots really good. Hard to find the brass but it can be made out of 30-30 brass if you have a lathe to work with.
Cool gun...wish someone still made them.
Man I want one of these badly. I already have a Model 11 shotgun, would love it's rifle counterpart.
Omg I’ve never heard about this rifle I love it a 35 Remington would be perfect
Nice video and Alex you should really do Top5 repeater rifles!!
I've got one with a pistol grip stock like what you have. it has a round bottom instead of the square bottom
also, I found I was able to use stripper clips that would be used to load any M1A/M14. The Argentine mauser stripper clip works alright too, just not a smooth
wow awesome rifle
man that is a beautiful example of that rifle
nice got to love the old gun's and yes I do know about it and other Browning gun's
Good Video Alex, I get to shoot one soon.
I absolutely love my Model 8 in 35 Rem. It shoots so nicely, and is just a nice historical rifle. He did mention that the posse that killed Bonnie and Clyde had model 8s in it, the cool thing is that the police who used them back in the day modified them to have a 10 round detachable magazine. Oh and with the stripper clips, for my 35 Rem model, I can use 30-06 stripper clips for the Springfield M1903.
The detachable magazine version wasn't available until 1937
I think I remember something about John Browning using the Auto 5 firing mechanism for the Model 8
I love this gun awesome
I have my grandfather's Model 81 (produced 1941) in .35 remington. It's a great gun and will happily eat Hornady leverevolution .35, recoil, I find not to be bad actually, lot of mass that moves and absorbs the force
Alex, where did you go? Best TFB video content provider.
beautiful!
This channel really should have A LOT more subscribers. All I can say is thank TFB for all the great videos.
Manos arribas !
I remember when i was younger me and me dad went to the gunstore and found a “broken” one for 500 bucks but we talked our way to 200. We got it and realized it was only missing a hard to find screw and got it working again.
8mm mauser clips work with 300 savage
awesome boots man.
Always found the action interesting. Actually picked one up a couple months ago. One I got is chambered in .35REM. Still have yet to take it out to the range but with the scarcity of the .35REM cartridge I kind of don't even really want to shoot the few rounds I was able to get my hands on. We'll see though, maybe I can pick up some dies and reload the brass.
Been wanting one of these in 35 Rem for awhile. I find it ironic that a rimless cartridge designed for early semiautos now survives in lever actions (i want a 336 in 35 also). Another one of JMB's great designs.
There was a full rack of these at the local cabelas and I never quite knew what they were, saw this video about 3 months ago and went back to handle one and they were all gone, Sweet video though!
The recoil from a Model 81 in 300 Savage is fierce.
Truly a man's gun. I love/hate shooting mine.
Auto-loading extended is love & life
The bolt carrier looks pretty similar to the one on my mossberg 930 shotgun. Interesting.
Nice
If anyone doesn't know, Huntington's advertises that they have 30 Rem brass. Most sources say you can use 30-30 data for handloading just fine (RL-7 or IMR3031, anyone?). So don't let ammo supply issues deter you from buying a 30 one if you find one.
Bonnie and Clyde used the Model 8 a lot, along with the BAR.
Browning was one of the if not the best weapon designer ever.
cool~!
Which are the differences and similarities between this rifle and the SKS?
Like the rolex!
2:41 but how'd that shell land like that though.
Used to see these at gun shows for like 3-400$
Nice piece. Was the finish redone at any time?
I want one, damn
2:41 look at the cap
Love this gun and I adore 35 Remington it’s my favorite cartridge ever but I see that bruise on your thumb did you get Remington thumb
is there no run and gun with the model 8 yet? gotta do one!
Nice never owned one but have shot one
Gee I wish I could own one 👍❤️😁
Was that rifle refinished? It looks awesome.
i have a few of the strips 5 round but they say one 42 what does this mean??
Whats the finish you have on it?
How easy are these rifles to obtain? I'd like to get my hands on a Winchester .351 semi-auto as well as a Model 8.
Model 8 owners rule!
Did these precede the A-5?....which also has a vicious recoil impulse
i inherited one of these rifles from my grandfather when he passed> the date on the barrel is printed "1909". it is in very good working order. if you could, what value would you put on this rifle?
That might be one of the patent years. You might find the real date of manufacturing by finding a two or three letter code on the front of the receiver I think. Mine says RP. Which means November 1923. I think.
I wouldn't mind a remake in 30-06 and 7mm
Outstanding video...yeah I had never heard of it either until the Highwaymen movie got me interested again in the weapons used...interesting that the upper receiver it looks so much like an AK....I believe the model 8 started production before the AK was there any knowledge by Kalashnikov of the model 8?
Definitely before the ak. And yes people claim that’s how he came up with the safety lever Is he just used the model 8 lever/dust cover design.
How do u unload this firearm?
a mliltary version of tha rifle was used in the assination of bonnie and clyde barro 1930s
Which are the differences and similarities between this rifle and the M1?
interesting mechanism
