- Turning an older piece of Apple wood that I have had for years.
It looks all dried out and not going to look so good.
Check out how it turned into an amazing looking piece of wood.

Thank You Gary... YOU are my Friday morning wakeup. .. Apple wood turning and coffee oh yea!!! 😎 That Apple turning is picture perfect and just what the Doctor ordered for my Friday. ... I hope your shoulder is starting to feel better? Until next Friday Gary..... TM
Thanks tuffy! I do like turning Apple Wood. Turns easy and pretty wood.
Had a PT visit yesterday and he ok'd for bike riding. We went on an overnight camping trip and went for a short 8 mile ride along the Willamette River. Will do it again today before heading home.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
I always enjoy seeing you turn a live edge bowl. I have a couple of small apple trees that are going to be removed shorty. Guess they will be joining the wood collection for turning in the future. As always thanks for sharing with us Gary. Cheers
Bruce
Thank you Bruce. I think any size of apple will look good when turned. I know people turn crab apple and I think it is a small tree.
Have fun,
Gary
What a beautiful bowl, Gary! Turned wood almost never disappoints. You proved that once again. Thanks!
Thank you Greg. I love these wonderful surprises while turning. I love all wood grain but this was really special.
Take care,
Gary
It's so satisfying to watch some unassuming piece of timber get turned into that. Great job, Gary!
Thank you Jay. Just goes to show you not to assume based on the outside of the wood. I did that again for next weeks video.
Take care,
Gary
Beautiful piece, Gary! Thanks for taking us along!
Thank you Peter and thanks for watching,
Gary
This bowl is absolutely beautiful. I love turning Apple.
Thank you Lee it is one of my favorites to turn as well.
Take care,
Gary
Good evening, Gary.
It was fun watching this bowl go through the changes. It is exciting just thinking about turning Apple wood. Your piece finished absolutely gorgeous.
All the best to you.
Good evening to you Ray.
Apple Wood is lots of fun to turn. It is almost like it peeling an 🍎.
Sands nice as well.
Thanks for watching my friend,
Gary
Apple is always (mostly) beautiful. Thanks for sharing
Thank you Garth. You are right it sure stands a good chance of being very nice looking.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
This is a pretty stunning piece of Apple wood Gary. Nice to be able to tune in again & catch a video of quite a beautiful little bowl. The colours amaze me somewhat for Apple but this one shines in what is a very nice little bowl. I love it, Don from South Australia.
Thank you Don and thanks for watching.
Take care,
Gary
Apple wood is one of my very favorites and this video shows why! Well turned!
Thanks so much Dave. I do love turning Apple and really forgot I had this piece. Pretty sure I have another piece or 2.
Thanks for watching my friend. I will get to your email later. We just got back from a spur of the moment camping trip.
Gary
Apple wood is so gorgeous and this one is a prime example of the beauty! I have a large Apple tree off my back deck and I keep threatening to cut it down and turn it into bowls!
Carol for sure Apple is a very beautiful wood. Now if you tree was having issues maybe cutting it down would be in order. I hope to find more of it but I have not looked all that hard.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I'm surprised that the wood hadn't deteriorated being how long that you had kept it. Except for losing that little bit of bark it certainly turned well. It's a very nice looking piece. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Thanks Glen. Well it was out of the weather so that really helped. As I looked at the video again it looks like that piece was already off before I started. But maybe not.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Another beautifull result Gary. Very enjoyable to watch. Cheers Deno
Thanks so much Deon. Happy you liked it my friend.
Take care,
Gary
That sure turned out to be a pretty bowl, Gary. Lovely job, my friend. 👏👏👏
Take care,
…..Gord
Thank you Gord. And take care of your self my friend,
Gary
Beautiful looking bowl Gary. Apple wood does have some amazing contrast to it.
Thanks Scott. Apple is a very nice wood to turn. And with all the different types of apples we get a difference in the wood itself.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That is beautiful Apple wood Gary!
Thank you Laura, I do love Apple wood. Makes good wood for the smoker as well. Really good on pork and turkey.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Another beautiful bowl. Thank you for sharing your work. I do like the wipe-on poly finish. Thank again!
Thanks so much. I like the wipe on poly a lot as well. Also the water based poly is nice to work with as well.
Take care,
Gary
Really nice. The Apple wood is beautiful...... even after all the years.
Thank you very much Lance. I was sure all the colors had faded away. But sure happy there were still there.
Take care,
Gary
Nice turn this week Gary. I have two large cherry logs that I am patiently waiting on them drying. I hope I can get a great looking bowl like this one. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you James. I am sure you will get some really nice bowls from the Cherry. It is an amazing wood as well. I was recently given a really nice chunk of Cherry and looking forward to turning it.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
A beautiful piece of apple Gary
Thank you very much Ian and thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful bowl! Very nice live edge, and you are correct, the colors are wonderful. Thank you for sharing. I have an apple tree I may be cutting down, I'm not sure if I want to wait 5 or 6 years for it to cure, but if I have to, I guess I will. For an outcome like this, it will be worth it.
Thank you very much Mark. I am sure you will not have to wait that long. I did because I had it in the back of my shed and just never paid attention to the fact it was still there because it was not that special looking. Well that is what I thought and I was sure wrong.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Спасибо, Гэри. Яблоня сухая, без трещин, большая удача! Исполнение, как всегда, классное!
Сергей, большое спасибо, я ценю ваши комментарии и спасибо за просмотр,

Gary, that is one sweet bowl. Great work once again and it was neat to see how you saved the bark.
Thanks so much Dick. Sure glad I peeled off what I did and that I only need to fill the one spot. As I looked back I think that piece was missing before I started.
Thanks for watching,
Gary

Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very nice Gary. Another impressive project.
Thank you very much Dave. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Take care,
Gary
Beautiful. I forget about apple, but not generally a very pretty wood. Has to be in my top 10 if not top 5. It usually has those nice shades of pink through the grain. Great job, beautiful bowl. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Doug. Apple is my favorite fruit wood to turn. I love turning it thin as it warps so nice and does not crack.
i have a real cool one my wife snagged for a snack bowl.
Thanks for watching,
Gary

I like the poly. It does the color justice. Also noticed you are almost up to 50k subscribers. Wow, that’s great!
Thank you Valerie and if you have not tired Polycrylic I recommend it as well. I have all you wonderful subscribers for where I am at. Much appreciated.
Gary
As always, great video.

Thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 I don't. Doesn't seem right. 🤣

Another great work. That became a work of art 👍👍
Thank you very much. At least the way you are doing it.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful bowl and the apple colors just add to it! I sure like the finish and although I have never used wipe on poly i do have a can of it but it is old so not sure how it will work anymore! Well done and thanks!
Cheers Al
Thank you very much Al. If you have never opened that can it might be just fine. Once open and the air gets to it there is a chance it will start getting real thick.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Really Stunning piece love the shape and the colour is amazing
Thanks so much Colin. It was a very nice surprise for sure. Happy you like it and thanks for watching,
Gary
Apple wood is awesome , I just wish I had more access to it.
Thank you Dale. I do not come across much Apple but I am pretty sure this came from some wood I got when someone cut down a small apple orchard. Some other that I have came from my sister in laws place when they had an apple tree dye. Just have to keep watching and it may show up.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Good job well did. 👍🐝🌞
Thank you Jim!
Gary
I really like the shape. Looks great.
Thank you very much Rick. It was really fun to finally turn this piece.
Take care,
Gary
So very nice!
I always like that shape👍😎
Thanks Luie. I have to admit I was thinking the bark side was not going to look all that good but I was wrong with that.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
As always beautiful work brother. this thing came out fantastic. I love the sheen on it 😎🤙🏽
Thanks so much Habeeb. Hope you are able to get back on that lathe of yours.
Gary
Beautiful!
Thank you Lucy and thanks for watching,
Gary
That Apple is just gorgeous, Gary! Sometimes, for me, there just isn't much color in Apple, but this one is exceptional. The heartwood just really makes this piece shine, along with your great poly finish, of course! I'm so happy the bark stayed on for you, it really adds to the overall natural look of the piece. Great job, my friend, keep'em coming! 😀
Phil
Thank you Phil. I was so surprised the bark did stay on and the piece had so much color. If I was a betting man I would have lost the ranch on this one LOL.
Take care of your self buddy and we will see you when we see you.
Gary
Nice, Gary. All the wood I have, the bark seems way too thick to keep it for a live edge. That finish looks great!
Thank you Qapla. Thick bark can be hard to work with but there are times it looks pretty good.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Nice job Gary! Beautiful bowl, as always great sanding ya do on your turnings to looks slick as glass, Enjoyed the video 😎👍
Thank you Kimsey. For sure the sanding is the base for a good finish. Apple sands really nice so this was not too much work.
Take care,
Gary
Awesome!!❤
Thank you very much and thanks for watching,
Gary
It's so much fun watching these beautiful pieces emerge from what looks to me like firewood. Great job!
Thank you Bren. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
That's nice!
Thank you Stuart and thanks for watching,
Gary
That's beautiful
Thanks so much Sue. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
Wowza! That is fabulous! I love that you can see the different colors of the wood, which truly grabs your attention! This turned out so beautifully! Fantastic job! Bravo!
Thank you very much. The wood was so dry that the colors just jumped out when I put the sealer on. That is always so cool to see.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Fruit woods mostly turn out nice that certainly did.
Thank you Lewis. I do love turning fruit wood but some of it is so hard to keep from cracking. Like Plum.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
so pretty
Thanks so much grambear8. Happy you liked it.
Gary
Nice dish.
Thank you and thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary, another wonderful bowl! Really like the oblong form. The different colors and having the bark on really adds interest. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Skip and thanks for watching.
Gary
Very nice
Thank you David and thanks for watching,
Gary
Another beautiful piece, Gary! The colors are so vivid, and I’m glad you were able to keep the bark on-it adds so much contrast and interest! Lovely finish too. Looking forward to seeing what else you can dig out of your shed.
Thank you Marcia.
I think you will like next week's. Actually a piece that looks better than I expected.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
I like it.
Thanks Josephine. Happy you liked it.
Gary
Beautiful colors for sure. Turned out very nice. Great finish as well.👍
Thanks so much Robert and thanks for watching.
Take care,
Gary
Nice.
Thank you very much Mark.
Take care,.
Gary
Excellent Gary! I haven’t had much opportunity to work with apple, but it certainly is beautiful grained wood! A nice surprise for everything to work for you. Interesting that you can apply a water based poly over shellac. It looks very good! Cheers, Rick
Thank you Rick. Yes you can put a water based over shellac sanding sealer. You actually can put about anything over it.
The poly I used on this one is the oil based.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Lovely bowl and great grain. Love the shape too. ❤
Thank you Marge. Happy you liked it and thanks for watching.
Gary
Really nice, Gary. That wood is beautiful. The only problem with a bowl like that is you are limited on how high you can pile M&M's in it lol. Did you almost glue your finger to the bark?
Bill
Thank you Bill...the M&M's is no problem I just tell my wife to get me more. After my head stops hurting from getting smacked I just get up and get more myself LOL.
Not sure why I did not get my finger glued but it worked out. I put the glue on the wood and spray the back of the bark and lay it in place. Finger holds it for a second. But I have glued it in place now and then LOL.
Take care,
Gary
Wipe on Polyurethane didn’t see that coming. Did you smooth the sealer with a scotch bright pad before the Poly? Nice piece!!
Thank you Victor. It was a spur of the moment thing.
Yes I did use the Scotch Brite pad before the poly.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
How comes you had it stored under your shed all those yrs and not a critter to be seen, when i turn apple i always yes always get little white fruit critter crawling out, don't last long though. Anyway, great turning great finish great colour, as always great vid. All the best from Lincolnshire UK
Thank you Gary.
I put up a sign that says " No bugs allowed" lol
Not sure if it works though.
Guess I better turn the rest of the Catalpa as it has been there even longer.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
That's a really beautiful piece, Gary. Love the color contrast. I'll bet it looks even better in person. I'm curious about something. How long do your typical projects (this one in particular) take to complete? It is kinda hard to get a feel for it with sped up, real time and editing. Thanks
Thanks Tom. I never keep track but I would say 1-2 hours. Hard to say with lots of stopping.
I did do one a few weeks ago and should all the turning in real time there was 10 minutes of turning. Then sanding and finishing would be added to that
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful as always. Question. Do you sand in between seal coats and finish coats because it looks so smooth. Thanks Gary.
Thank you Charles. Most of the time I use the fine Scotch Brite between costs. The trick is try not to put too much finish on at a time.
If I get too much and it starts drying then I will use 400-600 sandpaper.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 thank you Gary
Gary, very nice. I have a question when one’s talk about apple can it also refer to crab apple? I have a crab apple tree that a friend had. I cut it down because it was dying and have it in my wood pile. There are some sections that are 4-6” in diameter. I didn’t know so I wanted to ask. Thanks
Thank you Kevin. There are many types of apple trees and I have seen some very pretty things turned from Crab Apple.
So for sure I would say turn it.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
4:31 well, if the CA was not dry yet, it was shot out by the centrifugal force 🙂
That is a fact but it was dry so all was fine. Watching CA glue dry is like watching paint dry so I left that part out.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Wow that’s beautiful
Thank you very much I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Take care,
Gary
