Best motorcycle tracking drone. Skydio 2.

  • This is by far the best drone in the market today that autonomously tracks moving subjects really well while avoiding obstacles in its way.
    In the video I mentioned that I might have been riding too fast prior to the crash, but actually upon reviewing the video, I was not riding fast at all. I was fairly slow. My Skydio seems fine other than a broken propeller and scratches near the propeller body. Thankfully no damage to the lenses nor gimbal.
    Well I hope Skydio will reconsider my warranty claim, and I'm hoping for them to at least send me a replacement propeller as well as advise me further in terms of performing firmware diagnosis to check if all is ok with its electronics after the crash.

    wow! this is the drone I have been looking for. I am a cyclist and shoot action drone shot with my DJI mavic air, but I was never able to shoot my action film my self, never it was possible. On top of that DJI mavic air intelligence battery drains battery life slowly over time, I had to throw out several batteries. On top of that its return home function didn't function properly, I ended up losing it yesterday in Saw grass swamp. I did some good video shots with it but I was never satisfied and it wasn't for action shooting at all. It was impossible to do it alone. I am not going to buy DJI mavic air again, so I have been looking for alternatives. This Skydio 2 seems to be the one that I need. Thanks so much for review! It's amazing Skydio 2 followed you on high speed and changed direction of filming while avoiding obstacles by itself. DJI mavic air was never able to do that.

    Great video and nice edit, love your motorcycle. Your greatest risk was actually to the bicyclist and cars the Skydio 2 just narrowly flew over. Per Skydio 2 manufacturers manuals, the AI avoidance system cannot accurately detect moving objects so at the low turn off floor height the risk of personal injury was high and properly damaged to cars or startling the driver to crash.... saftey is no accident. Wires and branches are just personal risk for you on any drone damage so not a concern on others.
    Just keep that in mind please as any injury reflects bad on droning community.

    Apparently the current crop of drones has been dumbed-down after the lawyers got hold of it. Thanks for the video, I too am going to be motorcycling (across Australia) in 2024 and I’ve been looking for a drone with “ACTIVE TRACKING!” Thanks from Canada.

    Did you have the height disabled? This seems to be the most common reason why I see people crash this drone...I’ve had mine before Christmas and I am careful to choose the area that the Skydio would do best, such as higher up, on the sides that don’t have as many trees or cables. Also, it takes time to trust a drone and the ai...just put it in the best position and enjoy it. Keep Flying!

    • @swteng73
      @swteng73  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes I did. I disabled it cos I thought it would be actually safer to allow it to fly lower and below the power lines but as I learned it even with it disabled, it still wants to fly higher

    personally i feel there is no advantage to drone shots that are low to the ground and close to the target. if you want that, just use a gopro on the end of a long stick. all that beautiful scenery and you fly the drone close and tight when it could be high up and above filming you and the landscape and avoiding all the obstacles.

    • @swteng73
      @swteng73  Před 3 lety

      Actually I wasn't going for the low shot angle but more of trying to keep it below the overhead cables since it was my first follow me flight on the bike

      You can not efficiently operate a motorcycle with one hand on a long stick, especially when riding off-road. The drone did wonderfully. Already have ordered mine.

    Very cool video!!!! Was the drone recording the audio as well??? It seems like at the start of your video your commentary was coming from your helmet mic.....is the drone recording that??? If yes, that is really incredible for vlogging while you ride.

    Hey Alan, you made a great video. Skydio 2 is meant to track you up to 60 kmh (37 miles/h) and you definitely was driving slower than that. Hope Skydio guarantee gonna cover it. And hope Skydio gonna upgrade its firmware after such crashes.

    • @swteng73
      @swteng73  Před 3 lety +2

      Thanks for the comment. Yea I wasn't riding fast at all and the flight path was open and had no obstacles in its way. Visibility and lighting was good. As you could see in the earlier part of the video I think there was some sections where it flew under trees just fine and had no issues at all. I was riding in an open area and Skydio promotional videos had it flying even in more difficult forest than I was in the video. I rode fairly slow and further more I was also using the beacon and I was always checking my phone to check where it was flying. Skydio replied to my email and said they were unable to warranty the incident due to me flying it not in accordance with its safety and operating guidelines. However I had wrote back to them that I disagreed as prior to the crash I was not putting it under any difficult flying conditions such as flying into trees nor flying into electrical cables. It was set to track me from the rear and it should have been able to follow me along the open path. At the time of the crash there was no fine overhanging branches in its way as well. Although in the video I said I might have been riding too fast, but in hindsight when you look at the video, I was actually not riding fast. We'll let's see. I am awaiting for their further reply.

    You are gambling with your Skydio by flying it near utility lines, tress with thin branches, and low over roads with other moving vehicles. Read the instructions. Good luck!

  • @MotoVibes

    Alan, thank you for this video - it gives a good idea of what it is like to record drone footage while riding. Not the easiest terrain either with all the trees and cables - shows how amazing this drone is. I have ordered one for myself now and I am considering different options on how and where to store it on motorcycle. I have Touratech Extreme Tail Bag sitting here which will definitly be too small - did you try putting it in the Wunderlich Elephant tail bag of yours? It should fit - shouldn't it? Would that not be easier than carrying the drone in your back pack? Thank you, enjoy your drone & greetings from Germany, Oliver

    • @swteng73
      @swteng73  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Oliver, thks for dropping a comment and glad my video provided some value. Do take your time to get used to how it flies and behaves before you try it with your bike ya. Unfortunately the skydio arms are a bit too wide to fit in the tail bag, but having it with my back pack works for me not just when I'm off roading but when I'm cycling on my mountain bike as well. If I was touring with my bike then I would have my panniers.
