- A common homemade weed killer recipe consists of vinegar, salt, and dish soap. I test of the mixture on both grassy and broadleaf weeds to see how well it works. I would not recommend using this on weeds in the lawn. It is more applicable in areas where you no longer wish to grow plants. Check out the results in the video. Here is the 2 gallon sprayer used in the video. amzn.to/3sCymKE (affiliate link)

Hey Jesse, what do you think would be the best thing to do for overgrown fox tails because they are taking over my lawn and I really want to get rid of them.

Hello,
I use this method but use cleaning vinegar and more dish soap with salt.
But for it to work best apply it to the weeds while weeds are in sun.
So as sun first hits the weeds spray them covering every leaf and bloom.
Sprayed some the other day and all are dead. in one treatment.
I find bleach works well, I've even mixed it with vinegar for best results.
salt is the worst thing to spray with in soil
Just did it and it worked perfectly. The only difference I did was added 1 cup of hot water to dissolve the 1 cup of salt. Then proceeded to follow the rest of the directions. Unwanted growth was brown within 2 hours here in Orlando, Fl. Definitely soak it well! 💯
Same here thats some mean chit man...worked great.
Hit them with a trimmer BEFORE hitting them with the mixture. Doing that will open the weed and the mix will kill it to the root.
Really great tip, thanks!
Thank you for that. It was first thing i thought of too. Stop the photosynthesis and chlorophyll processes and it will kill it
Exactly, kill at the root! Also apply early in day so has heat of sun. Kills weeds 4 to 8 hours.
Absolutely!
Great tip. Just make sure there is no poison ivy. Don't want to weed wack that all over the place.
Never been this early. I have used your videos to start a lawn care company and have been averaging $300 a day! Growing slow but steady
Great job
@@lawncarelife do u just leave it after u see weed dying? Or am I supposed to take it out?
Hell yea man, hope you are still going strong 💪
THANKS SO MUCH FOR OFFERING A SAFER option to killing weeds. I quit allowing chemicals in my yard 3 decades ago because I did not want my dogs walking on poisoned grass/sidewalks and wallowing around in the grass as well. My dogs have been VERY long-lived (while the rate of cancer in dogs continues to go up and I know it has to partially due to all the yard chemicals they are exposed to) and my grass is just as green as all my chemically treated neighbors’ yards. Who needs a perfect weedless yard at the price of harming animals/wildlife/children? I am one of a very few in my n’hood who does not use chemicals in my yard for ANYTHING!
It's good to see a professional demonstrate a non-toxic natural weed killer.
Tried this & it didn't do anything but brown the grass until a couple rains came through, then back to square one.
@@bhough410 try Harris 20% vinegar weed and grass killer. I have used they’re all purpose horticulture vinegar and diluted it. This works as well. You will see results the next day. All brown.
@@bhough410 , Same here.
Just plain boiling water poured onto weeds is very effective.
Amen to that ♥️🙏
I've been using this exact application for the last 4 or 5 years. Works great for me. The trick is to really saturate the weeds. It does take a couple of days before you really see the big results. Kills my dandelions deader than a door nail!!
"Deader than a door nail!" 🤣🤣🤣 That really tickled me. I haven't heard that in a while.
Om
What about just pouring salt on weeds, I know rock salt kills grass!!
Dandelions have some good health benefits. Medicinal. People have been told to call them weeds for so long ao they didn't know the benefits.
This works really well on my gravel driveway. Best to apply it on a sunny day but not so hot that it dries rapidly. I like to do it in the morning when temps are 80F or less and no rain forecast for 24 hrs.
I think repeated applications over a few days would really do the trick. The key, is to ensure you have a good week ahead of dry sunny weather, to prevent rain from washing it off.
has to get to the roots I think
I used the same mixture but epsom salts, instead of table salt for years for the middle of my gravel drive that grows weeds. It worked fine.
better to use just salt... epsom salts is mostly magnesium and is in many fertilizers. Salt is cheaper too.
I use this weedkiller mix all the time and I found that if I use a grass trimer prior to spraying the area I end up with a much better result. Great video!
Does it killer poison ivy?
@@johnjames535 To be honest, I’ve never tried it on poison ivy. I know I haven’t had any luck using it on English Ivy.
I tried it just now and its already working. The area is small and not a lot of weeds, but they're growing. The solution is already work in just an hour. Thank you.
I use this every year around my end-of-the-road mailbox area for poison ivy and along the fence row. Same recipe except I dissolve salt in 1 cup of hot water before adding to vinegar. Overall coverage with mist spray is essential. Works for my purposes. Well made, informative video 👍🏼

I was thinking as I watched that dissolving the salt first might be a better technique
Exactly what I was wondering. Any chance the vinegar would dissolve the salt?
@@otchsigua8223 does mix need to sit for a set time for salt ti dissolve or does it happen pretty quickly
@@otchsigua8223 Better than breathing Roundup
I would cut the weeds down first, rake the area out, and then thoroughly saturate the whole area with the sprayer. This will insure that that the mixture gets down to the roots. I have used this recipe several times and it works good. The only difference is that I always add boiling water to mine and it works great! Thank you for a very informative video btw.
Why boiling water?
@@derekwilliams3093 To dissolve rhe salt first.
does it kill the grass though?
@@sandmansimms5704 It kills everything in its path. Except Crepe Myrtle, I guess!
@@feebee562 oh I'm looking for something that will leave the grass and kill the weeds and small trees trying to grow in 🤣
I live in Az and have had good results with this for the last 5yrs-I use Salt pellets vrs table salt & just throw a handful in. Also I use about double the dish soap -even works on cactus!!
Important note: wash out the sprayer immediately after use, the vinegar will destroy the pump rubbers if left for a time.
Oh no wonder.... Thank you😊
😩😩😩😩😩😩. Mine has been left out after each vinegar use.
Right learned this the hard way, also will rust part’s quickly.

Thank you for making this video. I am a first time homeowner and this video gave me some great things to use
Thanks, I’ve been looking for this recipe. It will work well on stone walkways. 👍
I've used this recipe many time with success. When I do this, I get the weeds cut as low as possible by whacking them down with the weed whacker first. Then I spray heavily. More times than not, they never come back, and I treat as needed for the ones that do as soon as I see them starting to sprout.
Not enough salt. Salt is the key! Instead of 1 cup per gallon you need to use the whole container per gallon. The vinegar needs to be super saturated with salt. The vinegar being a mild acid, acts to break down the waxy (protective) coating found on plants. The salt then draws out the water from the plant. Soap really does help the salt stick to the plant. This is also best applied on a really hot day. With this ratio of salt I guarantee you would have killed ALL of those weeds. If enough is applied and it gets into the root systems nothing will grow back for a very long time. On a hot day you can spray in the morning or noon and by night the plant will already be wilted and dead.
Thank you thank you thank you ❤❤❤
Yep. I think the salt kills better than the vinegar.
Perfect timing. Was gonna use an herbicide today but it said not to use if it was gonna rain in the next 24 hours, which it is so was looking for something not horribly toxic if it went into the sewer system.
I used this mixture (w/epsom salt) around my sidewalk cracks and driveway, and within 2 hours,
it was browned out & dying. 5 days later, it appears that those areas were dead. Thanks for the info...PERFECT!
I live down here in Australia Melbourne and I use bleach rock salt and fish washing liquid and after a few days every thing is yellow I boil the water for the rock salt to dissolve it and let it cool down works great 👍
I can't wait to try this, I just went through a whole gallon of Ortho concentrate and it did not do the job I thought it would, I'll be doing this in the next couple days and post my results thank you
I just sprayed my big weeds with this solution, and when i ran out of my 2 gallon mixture, i looked around at the weeds i sprayed and the leases are up turned and shriveling up! Thank you so much.
I will thank you for this insight because I heard of all these ingredients be put together but I've never seen a video on it thank you for the input
I’ve done this several times in the past and it works great 👍🏻
Is this permanent

You have a beautiful view! Thanks for the info. I’m gonna try it in the weeds that grow in the cracks in my driveway.
I used it and it worked. Lined the curb on street level/ the results were Awsome. There were little prices of grass starting to grow back/ it took care of that
I have used this for maintenance the last three years and it is effective
Very nice video I will try this on my driveway thanks.
I was formerly employed in the lawn care industry. I have tried the mixture you used and it is a pretty good herbicide to use, but it is not systemic and will only kill what it hits. I recommend a herbicide called Triclopyr for total weed control.
Thank you so much! I’m gonna use it on my flower bed 🤍
Is it a natural one?
@@faebalina7786 No it is not natural
Thanks for the video. My husband and I thought we were supposed to use a higher concentration of vinegar-like 45%. We’ve got super fast growing tumble weeds out here in the southwest and we need something to get those gone! Going to try the recipe today.
I try it today at my front yard.. Will keep you posted....thx
I use it all the time. I use epsom salt with eucalyptus and mint (usually the one on sale because it is stinky). Works GREAT.
Hmmmm I've been told snakes spiders fleas and other critters hate peppermint. So if you've added a mint to your mixture you might be killing like 7 birds with 2 rocks haha
Great video, I think if i was clearing an over grown bed or around a common area like a play set for kids it would be effective to stopping new .🤔growth.
I tried it on the grass by the curb on the street THANK YOU
I tried it today and it worked so well. I was kinda doubtful at the beginning. 😂
Thanks for your all work and time .
It works very well. Been using it for a while
This salt recipe would be great in my pool equipment area; all 1" river gravel, no plants (other than the weeds that are now impossible to control)
I used this on our driveway and it worked really well.....I did drench the weeds
Boiling water or
boiling water and table salt poured on the weeds works very effectively.
This recipe really works and I’ve been using it for a year…
Gorgeous view! Thanks for the info! new subscriber!
Love this recipe, use 10% acidity vinegar and ensure good coverage, it will work fine to keeps weeds at bay on a driveway. It will not keep new weeds from forming, seeds blow in all the time - without destroying the soil nothing will stop new weeds so regular, maybe every 2 weeks will work. On really big established weeds, get right in at the base too - watch out with metal sprayers or other metal like fences - vinegar and salt is a great environment for rust - thanks for the video
Thanks for making video. This will be perfect for my situation with grass in gravel. I just don't wanna use chemicals because of dog...
I would trim first then spray, I think this would work! Thanks for sharing ☺️
No sir - this kind of poison needs a hi leaf area to do the damage - it''s not a root poison.
I have seen less desirable results after trimming in comparison to spraying the full leaf.
Getting it sprayed on the leaf parts is key from my experience and catch them when they are young.
I have used this formula, soap and vinegar only, works well. Plants brown the next day!
I have to try this, thanks for this information.
Thank you for this video. Can this remedy be used just along the regular fence line?
Use 20% to 30% Acidity Vinegar works so much better. Regular 5% Acidity Vinegar works but not as affective as 30%. Lowes in my area sells the 30% variety.
Thank you. I may give that a try next time
I tried this recipe a few years ago and it did work to "mute" the weeds, but they came back to life around 3 weeks later. So you have to do this and apply it every three weeks. It is better to dig or pull up weeds and put down black yard fabric or concrete. Those are the only things that stops earth from growing.
Cut the weed with a trimmer or shears then douse with the vinegar, salt and dish soap, then the circulation of the plant is opened up and it should take the dose down into the root. I tried this with some ivy. Looks dead so far. Once I'd destroyed the plant above ground, We've had a lot of rain and I've not seen it return. I did put a fair amount of salt in. I can't tell if it was the amount of salt or the vinegar! I also made a cup around a slit in the bark of some more using duct tape and filled that with salt. That one didn't like that either.
I live in WNY they use huge quantities of salt on the ice and snow-covered roads. In the spring and summer, everything grows just fine. I have not noticed any ill effects on the foliage.
You need to trim first so the solution can get close to the root. It works for me. Try a higher concentrate vinegar (instead of 5%).
yeah, I used 30% vinegar, salt, and dawn soap last year, waited for a good warm day, and sprayed heavily near the center of the weed to try to get the solution to the roots...it worked quite well....I did have to reapply later in the season....we have dogs and can't use anything like round up or weed and feed in our yard, so I do have some stubborn weeds that I have been working on...FYI I was able to find 30% vinegar at Home Depot. 😁
Correct. Regular strength vinegar does not work.
@@brendaf3132 incorrect. It does work, just not as well as the stronger stuff.
But make SURE you buy and use only organic vinegar. The industrial vinegar has all sorts of deadly things in it since they spray it with anything while grown. It is used basically as a super strong deadly solvent. I would not use it in my yard! Beware of misleading labels, Natural vinegar is not organic vinegar. Buyers beware and be safe.
I had five woody weeds kept growing under my kitchen window last time I cut them down I remembered being told to mix rock salt in hot water, leave to dissolve then pour directly into the stem, I did this three times & no sign of regrowth
Ok if I pulled weeds today and cleaned my area all out can I spray this solution to keep weeds away?
Thanks
Pam Indiana
I do this every summer, multiple times. It works for frequent reapplication is needed.
I tried that on a few species of plants. The vinegar was 10%. The effect was rapid but it did not kill most of the plants , they cama back in a few weeks
Thank you for the video! More Power and God bless
I use cup of domestos and fill the rest of my 5 litre sprayer on my pebble dashed front walls and it removes the green moss that starts growing up from the bottom of the walls and keeps them clean. Washing up liquid added clings the domestos mix to the stones. I apply this about 4 times a year so I apply it each season
When you see plants or weeds flowering you're growing a new crop of weed seeds to sprout even next year. Especially dandelions. It's simple to take a small hand garden shovel press blade down about 9", loosen around the whole plant root, pop pry the whole root out. They will grow back if you don't remove the whole carrot like root. I do this a few times a year on larger sporadic weeds.. I don't have many anymore.
I will give it a shot thanks
Hey thanks a million, I sprayed the weeds around my flowerbed and my 11 car drive way. I tried this solution and about three hours later, it was very easy for me to remove the grass with a tool. The grass had turned past brown it was grey.
I've never heard of a 30 or even 40 percent vinegar. You save me f
Home Depot has 30% vinegar & epson salt also ,going to weed whack spray after mixing the epson salt in very hot water to desolate the salt
Thank you, worked great!
Great video and such a beautiful place u live
I have that sprayer got one at TSC works great
Great video, maybe Teejet nozzle will get a better coverage to spray on the weeds. Thanks
I love that lake view!
I use Epsom Salt and it works good. Those plants and grass are longer than I have used it on. I apply more heavily the first time until the plants are completely wet. Sprayed in yard where I had a patch of weeds and the Bermuda grass did grow back after a few good rains. Don't use in vegetable garden though.
Would it work better if you use cider vinegar? Anyone tried it?
Great video! Thanks!
Thanks for your time
It do work thank you for letting me know
Do glad to find your channel
I used the same formula last year on my dirt driveway at my cabin and The weeds came right back again.
They asked,”where’s the pepper”???
Me too.
If you add a red die you can see exactly where the spray was put down..
In my experience it works much better if you pour the salt directly on the weeds. A LOT of salt. Then using a watering can moisten the area with vinegar. I tried your method and I had reapply often, several days in a row because the fine mist that comes out of the sprayer. The watering can allows the liquid to penetrate better. My way works with One application.
I'll have to give your tip a try. Thank you!
How does the salt stay attached to the weed? Doesn't it just fall off onto the ground?
@@hotcher2 yes. Salt the ground well.
I’m not concerned with getting the salt on the plant, if the ground is well salted and then moistened with vinegar you will get the best results. Best of luck!
@@hotcher2 mind you, nothing will ever grow there again. I used this method on my gravel driveway.
I just got the 2-gallon sprayer from home depot, it was $16.97. thirty bucks is steep for what is essentially a bucket. we're really paying for the spray thing. I'm trying this for my mum's yard, because she bought some toxic stuff and now she can take it back.
It needs to get down to the base of the weed so that it can get to the roots. Suggest cutting it first then applying it. It worked for me.
Use a 30% vinegar solution and it will work much better than the household vinegar. It costs more per gallon and is usually found in the pickles section of a grocery store. It will sure make a huge difference between weed killing with just regular vinegar and using it, instead.
So, a 4 hour kill instead of 5 hours.
where do you get a vinegar solution all I see in the stores is white vinegar or apple cider vinegar
@@koolkitties8552 Don't fall for that. Use any CHEAP vinegar from the grocery, find 1 gallon bottles. You can't make a bad recipe, and it's fun to see what works. Use any generic recipe and then hone it for yourself. Use this for applications like cracks in the driveway where you are only killing the chosen weed. It works great, it's completely safe for the environment. What's the fancy stuff gonna do, work 2 hours faster? : )
@@koolkitties8552 The "fancy stuff" isn't really fancy at all; it's a higher concentration of vinegar, and it does work better. I would just ignore Kevin.

Thanks for sharing this! I've used this method with success it just takes patience. You're killing the leaves and ultimately have to wear the plant out. Also one of your other commenters said, a simple black plastic can work as well. Especially if you want to plant there afterwards.
Yep, good way to do it in spring is to put out a good dose of water on your planting bed then black plastic or tarp it. Weed seeds germinate but die without sun. Heats up to pasteurize I guess you could say.
@@paulanderson4985 just like in our compost bin. Just flat. Can't believe i never actually made that connection til you just said it. Brilliant!

@@inquisitvem6723 id make sure to use the expensive vinegar. Like i said it's a very slow process. If your ivy is well established and woody, then you might be better off gowning up and cutting or just poisoning. Thanks for the recipe for a natural herbicide
I use vinegar and salt to remove rust from tools just steeping them in it for over 24 hours and sometimes I use baking soda instead of salt. I wash them with a brush in the mix and then rinse them with my house and spray oil on them. I also put them a cloth spray and fold the cloth around them and spray the cloth with more oil and it protects greatly
Would this work just as well with one of those sprayers that attaches directly to the hose nozzle

I have tried this on weeds I have--all gravel terrain in the desert SW and the amount of weeds after el Niño rains. I don´t have to fret over other ornamental plants or grasses being affected. I am surprised at how effective it is! I am attacking the weeds as they first sprout up to take them out early. Curled up and browned after just one day.
