Good info. One thing I'd add, don't let anyone tell you what you need. My wife bought a sr22 after trying the grip on several. We both liked the feel and bought 2. She like the extended mag, I don't. When we moved up to 9mm conceal carry. We both bought the shield, again she got the extended mag, I didn't. During that time we listened to a boyfriend tell his girlfriend she need a sig 9mm. Girlfriend admitted to my wife she really didn't like it. And she bought it anyway. In my case we both like the grip angle of what we bought. But guys and gals don't tell anyone what they need, let them decide what feels right in their hand.

Great job on this series Ken! You're helping out a lot of new and potential gun owners dispel a lot of common fears surrounding firearms.

Great first point, but I don't think you expanded on that enough... most of the gun shops I've walked into have horrible customer service. Do not be afraid to walk out... If they don't answer or are dismissive of your questions but expect a certain level of surly old dude or tactical snobs who may not be enjoyable to work with but are a neccessary annoyance.
If possible better to rent at a range figure out what you want and then do a transfer.

This is some great advice. I urge all new gun owners to pay attention to this video. It took me several purchases to actually feel comfortable buying guns. Find a shop that has been in business for a while and has employees that are knowledgeable. Also, realize that you may not be happy with your first purchase as you become more comfortable around firearms.

First time buyers: Try before you buy. Take a basic firearms course. Don’t just go buy one because you read all the reviews and heard all of your police and military friends and family members tell you which is best for you.

Do I need a pistol license before I able to buy one? Or can I just take the background test at my local gun shop?

    • @GreenWolf2k
      @GreenWolf2k Před 10 měsíci

@noir6264 Depends on your state laws. I live in Georgia, and you don't need a license to own a gun. You do need one to conceal carry a gun. Background checks are required, and keep both the buyer and owner legally safe.

I think the most important thing is to learn the four basic safety rules and practice them when you go to buy your first gun. You'll put everyone around you more at ease and they will be more helpful.

My Grandfather had a Smith and Wesson 38 hand ejector he bought as a young man in the 1920s.
I shot it for years, when I bought my first revolver, it had to be a 38 and a Smith and Wesson. I bought a fantabulous used 64

The first time I went into a gun store was to pick up a gun I’d ordered online. The gun was a Taurus GX4 and my local gun shops didn’t have any in. I’m female and I live in a small town. When it arrived at my local FFL store I went down there and was extremely nervous. Everyone was nice and friendly and put me at ease right away 👍🏼

When/If your Taurus fails, you can trade it in for a S&W pistol. Good ones: a used Model 10 in .38SPL, a new/used M&P 9mm or M&P Shield (smaller). 9mm should be your minimum caliber.

Thank you Ken for this video series!! I’m retired military and grabbed the first M&P Ported Shield semi in 9mm I found. Great carry weapon!! Thanks to S&W for moving ahead in the carry class, much appreciated!!

Great series. Interesting that they're demoing a large caliber Magnum at 2:05 with the internal lock plugged/removed. Hopefully we can get new S&Ws someday without that hideous lock.

Totally agree!! Hell Colt, Ruger, Taurus dont even do it. And S&W actually offer some J frames with no lock. So they can do it on all their models, they just wont.

I’m not opposed to entertaining and trying any brand of firearm. Smith & Wesson products have always had my back and trust that, if needed, there’s no question in my mind that gun will work flawlessly. (please keep in mind that I take very good care of my firearms and I cleanedthem regularly. I follow all manufacturers recommendations for break-in periods and emanation power factor. These guns are designed to operate and engineered to operate as built. All of my firearms are box stock and will stay that way). Thank you Smith & Wesson.

I had my mind set of a Beretta PX4 Storm...until I showed up. I'm a big dude but that is the thickest gun I have held. Too thick for me. Turns out, the Beretta 92FS was a great fit for me. I trust Beretta, Ruger and Smith and Wesson with my life!

This is good straightforward information. I would like to add that before you walk into a gun shop for your first purchase, this is assuming that you have done some research and already know what you are looking for, (or have narrowed down you choices), take a firearms safety course to familiarize yourself with firearms safety, then go to a shooting range. Most of the shooting ranges I have been to have rentals that you can try, and they also let you switch out one gun for another during your time on the range. This is a good way to see how they feel, in your hand, and how they shoot, (trigger feel, kickback, etc), and then you'll have put yourself in a better position when you walk into the gun shop.
I'm on my third hand gun purchase, but my issue is no one gun shop has all of the models I am considering. Some don't have them because they say there is supply issues, some don't stock a particular model, and even have any of the guns I am considering. All of the guns I'm considering are Smith & Wesson guns, but they have plenty of Glocks, SIG Sauers and others. One shop showed me a SIG that was comparable to my main choice, an M&P M2.0 M&P 40 compact, model # 11691, but without it or any other S&W guns available, I wasn't about to make a decision to buy it. You can't compare guns properly if you don't have access to all ot them in one place..

SOME unethical gun shop employees will steer you to their favorite gun and not listen to your wishes and desires. IF you can, take a more knowledgeable friend with you.

@@Lee-fi4vo Since I knew what pistols I wanted to look at, of which they had none of them, I only wanted to get a feel of the size of the Sig. That way I would know if I wanted a compact pistol or something a little larger.

Make sure to watch guns reviews on CZcams first. You will want to see if it performs properly and what problems may arise it with. Then rent the gun at the range.

Doesn't hurt to watch gun channels as well for firearm reviews. Hickok45, Justin Opinion, Colion Noir are a few good ones. Also don't cheap out on a gun just because its your first gun. I don't believe in the concept "entry level". If you don't have the money for something nice, just wait and save for it.

Can you change the M&P to C for citizen.since Biden wants to make gun manufacturers and dealers responsible and liable in cases where guns are used in crimes. And making them only available for military and police which in turn will drive prices lower when supply becomes high and demand becomes low driving manufacturers of arms out of business if you don’t have a government contract. Imagine no gun shops no guns rifles for regular citizens that’s a lot of revenue lost. Time to stop supporting the people that will help with the disarmament of its citizens, no more discounts of ammo or weapons. More citizens with ammo and arms more supporters of 2nd amendment.
