      Yep. I've done this, it works great. Aluminium foil also works if plastic wrap is a problem for whatever reason.

    Beautiful work on the window! Have you considered taking the window gates to get sandblasted? Additionally if you plan on painting them consider getting them powder coated. It withstands the elements significantly better. If you do go the powder coat rout, the sandblasting is usually included in that service.

  • @fredo514
    @fredo514 Před rokem +27

    For the iron work, we use a braided steel brush on an angle grinder here. It’s a bit messy but quick. It removes paint, rust, dirt.
    If you want your evaporust towels to remain wet, you can wrap them in plastic wrap.

    Your window looks amazing! About the iron work: soaking it in cleaning vinegar for a day really helps (you could wrap the gate in old towels soaked in vinegar and put it in a big bin bag to keep it moist), but why don't you check around if there is a place that can sandblast it for you and powder coat it. Here in Germany there are social workplaces that do it for a very moderate price, maybe St. Louis has such an institution as well? I had work done by them and they were excellent. No more rust and maintenance free for decades.

    When I needed to repaint a window grate I used a angle grinder and a drill with a wire wheel attachment. For your trim, it is customary to not match the wall color. You could go with a white that has a hint of the yellow from the walls, or a white that matches the color of the white floor tiles.

      I wondering what kind of wire wheel would work best. No experience but my instinct says to use something softer than the iron. Maybe brass or bronze?

    • @flipnawesome5756
      @flipnawesome5756 Před rokem +1

      @@georgebush6002 the rust is darn tough it really pits the metal so the brass would be too soft. There are a variety of strengths to the wire wheels at the hardware store. I believe I used the strongest one. You really want to get down to the stable parts of the metal.

    Always enjoy watching your progress! Have you considered having your iron gates sand blasted? I live in STL city and use Liberty Sandblasting for larger/heavier parts. Their prices were great and they can paint/prime parts like these. It saved me a ton of time and the parts came out very well.
    Also, I've used a similar strategy to remove rust with the soaked paper towel, and I put a plastic wrap or bag over the area to reduce evaporation. Hope your work goes smoothly!

    I think wood trim the same color as the door would look good, and would keep it from being too "busy" down there, with that patterned floor. On the other hand, if you want to play up the busyness, then I think _dark_ green would look great, and could maybe tie in with green on the windows too. Home depot used to have an app where you could photograph your room and try different paint colors on different areas...

  • @sonyatimlick2024
    @sonyatimlick2024 Před rokem +7

    My suggestion for the door trim is a warm red/orange paint to compliment the door. Something really rich and deep in color would really compliment the arts and craft feel of the space. Its all coming along nicely!

  • @SpanishEclectic
    @SpanishEclectic Před rokem +7

    The window looks great! I love the dark green. I've been there with trying to get a clean, straight, solid edge to a window frame so the glazing line won't be a mess. It's so hard to convince contractors used to modern practices that sometimes you need to stick with the old way when your house is old. Setting the beadboard on the wood strips with an airspace makes sense to me. You sealed the back of the wood, but are leaving the stone behind so it can do its work. For the door frame, I think matching the walls will work best. Using shellac on the closet doors was fine, but since the door frame is new wood and across the room, the cohesive color (also matching the window frames & sashes) is on point. Glad you avoided the worst of the crazy weather. CA is getting a decade's worth of storms in one winter. In San Diego we are only catching the edge of those storms, but it's still crazy. Last week we had one of the closest lightning strikes I remember in my entire life; sounded like a bomb went off in the middle of our street. No damage fortunately. Take care and carry on. :)

  • @colinhess8900

    I will second everyone saying to sandblast the gates, but I would recommend also considering a wire wheel if you don’t want to go that route. That’ll get all the junk off and then you can spray it down with some phosphoric acid (metal prep/concrete etch) to convert the rust in the deep pits before paint

    I give you a lot of credit for doing "hard things" first, There is always a temptation with most old house owners to go do "pretty things" that make them "feel better", when in reality often those things have to be redone later on because some other repair (overlooked) need to be done. Having an overall plan and sticking to it (always emergencies come up that require modification) is really the best way to approach old house restoration. Patience really is a virtue.

    I learnt a fairly cheap way of doing large objects that need cleaning, is to get a large bin that has wheels and can fairly easily be moved around.
    Add a kilo of Citric Acid powder which can be bulk bought pretty cheaply (not very strong and is actually used in foods like cakes and such as a citric substitute) and then fill it with simple water. Lower in what ever you want clean and leave it for a few days or even overnight. The acid isnt that strong and is safe to touch, unless you are allergic to Citrus, but it is more than enough to lift rust and scale and other things from the surface and can leave them quite clean with minimal rinsing afterwards. Awesome for car parts that are very rusty.
    I think in future it will be best to not seal the outer gaps around the window frame until you are ready to fit the windows and get the spaces and dimensions correct before filling them in.

    There’s a product I used when I was restoring my old metal clothesline posts. I forgot the name of it but you get it at the auto part supply store. It’s a product they use on cars that turns rust to primer…no kidding it works! It comes in a spray can and it turns black once dry. You’ll probably still want to wire brush the chippy parts off first to get the profile back where you want it but the spray will take care of the rest.

    Hi Kaleb,
    You always do a very good job. You work beautifully.
    Listening to your reasoning about the stone walls, old building technologies and wood panels, I remembered that very recently - last week, I watched the video with similar conversation.
    CZcams Channel is Escape To The Dream, Restoring The Chateau. The family from Britain that bought and is restoring the French Chateau is having similar challenges and problems as you and Kim. The Chateau was build in 18th century, but the rooms were paneled in the middle of the 19th century.
    In one of the recent episodes they were discussing how they deal with moulded stones under the wooden panels and the rotten panels because of that mosture and mould.
    I am not a pro in restoring or construction, and if I understood correctly, they were going to put some insulation for the same reasons that you are not going to do it - to keep panels free of moisture that comes from the stones and help it to serve longer.
    Maybe you check out that video? It might bring you to another perspective and reasoning to make the decisions that will benefit your hard work.
    Good luck!

    Maybe go with a wire brush for the iron? If you use a circular one on a drill it should be a breeze. It should take care of the paint AND rust!!

    Maybe the dark green for the door trim? It already matches the cream well, but I don't know if you want to carry it inside or not!

    I think the door trim and window APRON lol should be painted to match the other trim elsewhere in the basement ; isn’t that green? It would help with the total design even though the other areas will be used differently the use of an accent color throughout can be unifying even if the designs are not in the same historic era.

    Arts abd crafts still use plinth. Just simpler plinth. Mine has it.

    It has to feel good to get these windows cleaned up and working well. Looking forward to when you can get back to working on the front.

    Iron needs an angle grinder and a wire wheel attachment. It will strip all the paint and rust off leaving the metal bare.

    I watched a tour of the Powitzky house in St. Louis on the CZcams channel This House, and the host mentioned a Compton Heights mansion tour you might be interested in, I believe he said it was around May 12-14? The details are in the description on the video but I am sure your local historical society or chamber of commerce has details as well. Love your channel, keep up the good work!

    For the trim: the White is too bright but I believe if you go 1 or 2 shades lighter than the walls for the trim it will look awesome. Giving it just enough contrast between the trim and the walls

    Well one thing for sure you won't get board with all the new challenges. Does that help?🤷🏼‍♀️😉 You are doing a great job. And your advice I am sure helps others dealing with some of the similar problems. Good tip about the window frame.

    Maybe use a shade darker paint for the trim. It will subtlety highlight the trim without it being distracting

    Thanks for answering the question I raised about insulation behind the bead board wall. Breathing walls-
    Makes sense. I hate being cold so my thoughts then go to, how will you keep the room warm….
