  • The all new 2021 Ford F-150 Powerboost combines a 3.5L V6 Ecoboost engine and a hybrid powertrain. I recently took this truck and tried to hypermile it the best I can to see the best MPG I could possibly get. I also talk about lane keeping assist and adaptive cruise control for the 2021 Ford F-150.

2022 XLT 4x4 with tow package. I just drove from Raleigh to Oak Island, NC. Set the cruise at 62mph and I pulled down 27.2 mpg. I did hit traffic 2x which I ran 100% EV mode. On the way home to Raleigh I ran at 70 and I still pulled down 24.1 mpg; better than the 23 EPA rating. The best around town mpg was 30. I have only had the truck for 4 weeks, but so far I am very impressed.

Thanks. Good video. Love your channel. Time to subscribe. I'm tired of watching videos about $60K extreme off-road pickups shown at other channels.
I've got a 2015 base model standard cab, standard bed 2wd with just a couple of options that weighs only 4190 lbs but with the optional 2.7L twin turbo that was sold at the time with a 325/375 peak hp/torque rating respectively. It has the older 6-speed transmission, but it has the traditional stop-start system that's now in all F150 power trains, save the new Power Boost. I owned a vehicle with tue starter/generator type start-stop and they are, in fact, much quicker and more seamless and super reliable ( a 2007 Saturn) but add much more weight and cost than the type that uses a regular starter and pump on the transmission, which has also proved reliable, yet sometimes annoying. I've measured my mpg over 90 times from tank-to-tank in that truck for over 5 years; only once on a highway trip, but that one time, it had a 500 pound, wind-pushing motorcycle in the bed, and so I got about what I'd usually get in a typical tank-to-tank, daily-driver fill up. I have, however, estimated highway trips 200-220 miles based on the average vehicle computer expected error that I've come to learn well over time; and it varies alot; anywhere from 24.5 to 28 at 65 mph, based mostly on how windy it is on the day of the run. Temps affect it a little but not too much with that 2.7L power train. Cold weather reduces mpg in my truck no more than 1 mpg, which is very good compared to other vehicles I've owned.
My first reaction is that you're really running the risk of reporting a high error when your trip is so short to the point that it takes less than 2 gallons of fuel for refill for the calculation. I entered a motorcycle fuel economy contest two times near Mansfield, OH. On the second event where I entered the run, the organizer decided to shorten the loop from the normal route, which had historically been over 150 miles, down to around 60 miles in order to favor electric motorcycles. The winner of these events were not decided by actual fuel usage or mpg, but instead by least cost for fuel used; although we did record and publish mpg or mpg-e. A streamlined, gas-powered, 250 cc (Kawasaki) twin cylinder motocycle won, but almost all the gas bikes that did the run that day got results that the riders felt were very screwy. For instance, the winner got over 240 mpg that day or 1 cent per mile; and his personal best up to that point had been around 182 mpg. He felt that his result in that short ride was likely not accurate that day due to the small amount of fuel burned during that short ride and how only a slight difference in the refuel level could drastically skew the result. Many riders did much worse than they expected that day. My result was about what it should have been that day at around 87 mpg on a stock 670 cc Honda; but I beat a few bikes that I shouldn't have; even beat a partially-streamlined small displacement gas bike whose rider had won previous events.
My pickup over achieves it's 19 city rating every time, but probably slightly under achieves it's highway rating if I were to drive 70-75 on a typical day. My best guess is that I could have achieved 27.5 to 28 in that trip you just ran at 55, but I'd need to speed it up a bit through the urban areas, as running those super slow speeds that you ran to use only the electric motor would actually hurt my score. I too would like to see a non hypermile run, but one that is still conservative driving.

I drove a late '99 Ford F250 2WD diesel with the 6spd transmission on this 10.5hr run. Filling past the first click on the slow discharge will eventually ruin the EVAP system and on most vehicles it is VERY expensive to fix/replace. You can only replace them not fix them. That is why you don't fill up too far. You will get a check engine light and the EVAP system code will show up I think it is P0456. It could just mean that your fuel cap needs tightening or something far worse. Of course it will not produce a problem for a few years or if you over fill and fill up the EVAP canister it could come quickly. The EVAP canister is connected to the fill tube with a vent hose. That is supposed to re-introduce the vapors into the fuel tank to be burnt later.

My average for that tank (lots of driving that day) was 29.2 mpg going 5mph over the speed limit. Full fill-up to full fill-up and manually calculated. Great video well done. I agree with you that the fuel economy for these trucks will be all over the place. The turbo Fords already very greatly depending on driving style, and so do the Ford Hybrid cars... driving gently really rewards you with both. So combining the turbo with the Hybrid seems like a scenario where the MPG difference between the “old granny “ driving style and the “teenage boy” driving style will be much greater than most people are used to. I really hope since the hybrid system is in the transmission that Ford will soon offer this across the board. I think a Super Duty or V8 F150 could see even more real world MPG improvement than the V6 just from the benefit of turning eight larger cylinders off more often in normal driving. Keep up the good work I look forward to your future videos.

I've noticed that winds, both cross, tail and head, have a massive impact on the ol' mpgs. I think altitude has a big effect on the output of the engine. You are losing 20% at 4,000 feet. You should get better mpg at lower altitude. I've noticed what looks like a very slight grade can have a surprising effect on economy as well. On my V8 2wd, I've noticed that I get better mpg at 60mpg than 50mph - might be different with hybrid though.

Almost bought one of these this year. The fact that they're using leftover parts which are then rusting within 5000 miles cost them at least 1 customer. The 2022 Gmc Denali may only get 18mpg, but it can also do hands free driving like the Ford, except Gmc can do it while towing 9,000 lbs.

It was good for 22 on hwy, but the same short trips only 8,10 miles to the gallon. I'm not worried about the planet, it's fine and you can still buy a lot of gas for 2600 dollars. I would like to have One but money is money. By the way, the New F150 is the truck of the year and l don't care what motor trend says, or car and driver! They never considered the F150 and o nly picked the ram because of the Hellcat trx. Strange, when the raptor was the horsepower champ, they didn't think that much for the horsepower? I switched back to Lincoln a few months ago, so I haven't had a chance to work on any of the F150 hybrids. But we have so many problems with the regular F150's, I don't have much confidence that they'll get it right.
"Interesting, I’m still not Sold on the whole hybrid concept."
That's a good call on your part. If people saw how big, heavy and expensive the batteries are, no one would buy a hybrid. We need a forklift to install them in small cars. I can only imagine how big they are in the F150.
