Motorcycle camping and Detours along the Blue Ridge Parkway can just wear you out

- We highly suggest when you're Motorcycle Camping, you pick your battles in regard to just how many times to stop at the “too many to count” overlooks and attractions that can be found along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Those things will wear you out more than the riding.
From waterfalls to viaducts to some very confusing detours, there are surprises around just about every corner of this fabulous route. And even the threat of a rummaging bear (which turns out to be just a cute, little racoon) makes this adventure even more special.

Between the camp setup, packing up again, all the work editing videos and riding I hope you find the time to destress and enjoy the trip. Thanks for all you do.
Thanks and yes we try. And you are welcome. We do enjoy what we do. Thanks again.
Stevie Ray Vaughan played guitar on "Let's Dance" for David Bowie; if'n y'all didn't know already.
DANA WIDE GLIDE. MY FAVORITE HARLEY!
As to decompressing, when I'm home, I'm an hour from the BRP.
A weekly pilgrimage to relax on the bike.
As for the Linn Cove Viaduct, Hugh Morton refused to sell a right of way, because the BRP philosophy was to route along the crest and he owned Grandfather Mt.
He didn't want the mountain destroyed by a road.
You used to have to get off on US221(the BRP ended just over the first bridge before the Viaduct proper) then get back on north of Grandfather Mt.
The Viaduct was a compromise to save the mountain.
Back in the late 70's, I "toured" on my 1976 Yamaha XT500C from Wilmington, NC to ride the BRP every summer.
I camped past the END OF ROAD barricade there at the south end of Linn Cove.
Alone.
Boondocking.
Talk about spooky, that's an ancient mountain, and lots of weird noises in the dark.
Good times!!!
You guys are so lucky to have each other, please don't ever take it for granted. Ride safe my friends .🙏
Thank you. Going on 33 years married
@@TwoWheelsBigLife Hey congrats! We're going on 36 yrs and I'd do it all over again. (Long pause) With the same person too! 🤣
That opening buritto kept me tuned in. Exactly what I do. :))
Bears like sweet treats, Be careful Kris! Rich you're good! lol, jk...safe travels
Yes she is sweeter I’m kinda crusty
360-degree shots and music gets 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Save time to stop at the blue ridge parkway music center museum. Really enjoy your travels. Every stop is fun.
I know I'm late, but yes that was Little Switzerland lol.
You were on 226A, a great road.
Hi Guys. I'm soooo thrilled to see another video. I missed you. I love, love,
Love your videos, and the way you two treat each other. You are a very beautiful couple. Please stay safe .
I miss your videos a following your adventures. Good luck in future adventure.
Thank you!
All I can say is Wow, thank you
BRP a beautiful ride. Detour. Campgrounds are nice. Rode BRP and parts of it a number of times. Always something more to see.
Lovely couple, lovely vlogs,, greetings.
The Blue Ridge parkway is my favorite ride on my bike. I have been all over the US from New England to the PCH and the Blue Ridge is just my favorite ride.
Hay, That be a Racoon, no man eater! Sorry near totally blind, the laser surgery I'm having.. The yellow blob, a Austin Healey! Love the vlog, Cheers from UK!
Lol. Richard “more riding, less hiking.” 😂👍 I couldn’t agree more however, I’m glad Chris shows us all the attractions.
We’re heading down there from Ohio on June 8th . Your wife is Awesome, you both are .
Another good one.
Thanks again!
I went across the Viaduct Wednesday morning.
It’s pretty cool how’s its built also
Ive forgotten to "un-pause" my Relive app too! lol I really enjoyed the video.
Greetings from Deadhorse Alaska
You made it !! Awesome.
I've been following you guys for a couple of years now and have always enjoyed your content. But now it is even more important to me to see your videos being, that I was in a severe motorcycle accident May 6 and am still in recovery, even if I am capable of riding again, I promised my wife I would not buy another motorcycle. So for now I ride by watching you guys, you see I'm in your age group, but still enjoy the ride. Really I just wanted to say thanks, and keep them coming.
Thanks a bunch James we really hope you recover soon. Keep us in loop. Thanks again.
I sure hate to hear that, James. On Memorial Day 2019, I passed out on my motorcycle from heat exhaustion. Of course, gravity took me and the bike where it wanted. I wound up on the other side of the highway lying across the curb. I wasn't sure I'd ride again after not being able to walk and having back surgery. Well, I am riding again. I'm praying for your speedy recovery. I believe you CAN do it again.
@@karenallen5208 thank you for the encouraging words, and it's awesome to hear you made it back on 2 wheels. God bless
@@jamesdeville1852 You are quite welcome, and may God bless you richly.
Just stopping by to say Hi ...keep safe on your travels 🇨🇦❤️🇨🇦
Hey there. 👋👋
Hey guys! I started following your channel when I lived in Colorado. I live in Va now and am really close to the BRP (near Fancy Gap). I have a spare room with a huge king size bed, its own bath, etc. You're welcome to it if you like.
Every state has an official state highway map. They are very detailed and they are free. Available at interstate welcome rest areas, highway dept. offices and other visitor centers...
Good to know. Thanks for the tip.
Respectfully, you haven't traveled much lately. That used to be true but rarely do the first rest stop after the state line have maps. They expect everyone to be using their GPS, unfortunately. I miss grabbing the map and considering destinations rather than just punch them into the GPS to get the shortest/fastest route.
I'm worn out watching....but laughing all the way.
Love riding the Blue ridge parkway
It’s is an awesome road.
@@TwoWheelsBigLife headed to Maine soon to do my next section of The Appalachian trail Grafton notch to the town Munson about 152 miles when I get back then I’m hoping in October to make a quick trip down to the Blue Ridge
Another great and inspiring video. Watched this in my 2WBL long sleeve!
Fantastic!
Having riding the Blue ridge south to north then the skyline drive, then into Gettysburg, back to the Blue ridge north to south.
The Blue ridge is about the beautiful scenery, taking your time and enjoying the ride.
"The journey is the destination"
Thanks for the video to remind me of awesome trip in the past.
PS only one detour in 2009.
I did the Parkway in the spring of 1974 and everything was in bloom! There was way less treecover along the road so you could see into the valley. IMHO it was better then. I wrote an instrumental tune about that ride which was the best ride of my life. I was on a deadline and did it in one day. The viaduct was not there.
Little Switzerland is a very nice little town, sorry you missed it. Love the blue ridge parkway , especially from Cherokee to Ashville, especially the Linville Vioduct! Going down there again first week of September
I've stayed at the Big Lynn Lodge numerous times in Little Switzerland - wonderful place with great food, comfortable rooms and a great view.
Also, am I the only one that thinks of the old Marx Brothers bit when I go over the Linn Cove Viaduct..."why a duck? Why a no chicken?"
Let's Ride!!!! 👊 😎
I’m in !!
Love that route summary clip at the end....great job
rsm8
Great job guys keep it up. You’re living my dream.
226A nice ride, 80 was a nice ride off the parkway as well.
Also Willville is my favorite campground on the parkway.
Really enjoying the soundtracks for this season.
Nice work you both do but hard work Thank you both for the nice videos .
I like the wandering off trail…especially when there’s bears involved!❤️
Absolutely Awesome!
We spent the night at Little Switzerland Inn. And did the hike to the Falls several years ago. Love our time there. Thank you for sharing.
good video guys and understand how that would be very tirering after all the detours but thanks for taking us along ride safe
I love riding this area, on & off the Blue Ridge. I could pour over maps all day, just to find more curvy roads. This is God’s Country!
Absolutely!
The BRP is an awesome drive. So many beautiful and interesting things to see and not have to spend a dime. My kind of trip. Thank you for taking us along.
NOOO! You guys would have loved Little Switzerland
I know we’ve been told. Well that’s a great reason to go back 👍👍
This video spells ADVENTURE! Thx for sharing. JP
Wow 🤩 that wore me out and I just sat here and watched the video lol. Lots of stop and go set up and teardown no wonder you guys are worn out.👍🏻❤️🤩
That is as a great Adventure video.. thanks..the 2 of you are a great couple with excellent communication ✅👍🇺🇸
We’re glad to see you return to your roots and are following you. Nice videos and content. 👍👍👍
Totally agree with you about stopping at some of the pull outs and not all or even half of them. Gets very tiring on a motorcycle. Campgrounds look nice. Great video.
Little Switzerland is amazing! I can't believe you missed it...augh!!! The Inn is the only independently owned property on the BRP. Totally worth the stop
I also am bummed you made the BRP seem like a burden....its a rider's dream. I'm questioning your life goals on bikes....
@@sueannadams9440 yeah, I have been a follower for sometime but tend to agree with you. This video came across to me a but negative for some reason.
@@sueannadams9440 Riding the BRP with my Lady is a dream come true!
I like watching your journey. I do like the recap of this vlog. Keep safe and pleasant journeys.
Wow, I love that Relive app…thanks for sharing all!
If it were me, I'd not use a heavy cast iron pan nor a big grill. Get a MSR backpacker's stove & backpacer's lightweight pan
I wish I had a planner like Chris along.dance them bikes!
Who knew that after Blowing Rock, Chris and Richard would drop off the map? Oh, you'll figure it out.
We figured we find it again. Oh BTW we mailed those out today.
@@TwoWheelsBigLife Thank you so much. I will display them in a prominent place and hopefully make people ask me what they mean. Happy travels!
.. and that Relive app is awesome..provides such a nice overall feel of your adventure.
You guys really set a high bar when it comes to motorcycle videos. Adventure on.....
I was on the Blue ridge yesterday here in Virginia 😃 always a fun ride.
Little Switzerland is a great place to stay and ride around the area. We normally stay at the Big Lynn Lodge, you can see down through the valley from your cabin, truly breath taking. The Diamondback (Route 226A and Route 80) is an awesome super curvy ride. Really enjoy your videos! Y’all Ride Safe!
Thanks for letting me enjoy watching you both ride 🌻🌻🌻
You are very welcome
Love yalls joy of our country, the ride and your joy IN life and FOR life. Refreshing, safe travels
from Cody Wy
Thanks Lori we do love this country!!
Crabtree Falls Campground has been one of our favorite places to stay and enjoy the fantastic scenery on the Blue Ridge Parkway; sure glad you had a chance to visit there!
I understand pull off fatigue. You definitely want to see the sights but it does make you weary!
Great video with some beautiful views. Thanks. I always enjoy them.
My first time on the Blueridge Parkway never got to see anything below the highway due to cloud cover the entire time. Return ride 3 years later it was clear skies and beautiful valleys
Good adventure.
did the BRP last year and the Roanoke detour was a real pain. Not well marked so I felt lucky to find the parkway again. did 2 nights each at 3 of the campgrounds along the route to allow time to explore. definitely a great place to unplug...
you are in my neck of the woods. yesterday my club rode up to Mabry mills in Virginia and then Meadows of Dan. lots of fun. love the brp
got to love it when Relive loses gps signal -----------. let the good times roll...
YES!! Or pauses for no reason
Hey Chris, with a broken bone in my experience it's the best to sleep as much as you can. So it can heal much faster....
I have had a similar situation and it help me a lot
Get well soon & best wishes to both of you 👍🍀🍀
Ride on ✌️
Great video guys, but I can't believe you couldn't find Little Switzerland. It's a pretty big town. That area on the Parkway is beautiful. We ride that stretch from Cherokee to Blowing Rock often. Did you find the waterfall that runs over a pull off, that you can park under and take photos. It's great.. Be safe and have fun.
Crabtree falls, haven't been there in years. Beautiful place. Further south is Willville motorcycle only campground, primitive but with clean showers, water and coffee.
Enjoy and safe travels.
Actually it's a good way south in Meadows of Dan Va.
"Relive" is such a cool feature!
Y'all are living life and loving it, tired means you got your day's worth!
You can add Willville motorcycle campground in Meadows of Dan to your list. (Just north of the NC border)
There's so much to see and do along the BRP. It's a huge attraction-based scene, essentially impossible to see it all. My favorite is just riding it. I keep wanting to ride the whole length but even living nearby there's always something holding me back. I keep saying next year...
Thanks….Great Vid….✌🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thanks Bernie.
Y'all were on the "Diamondback" Hwy226 coming from Little Switzerland Resort . Y'all are in my neck of the woods here. They filmed some of the 1992 movie "The last of the Mohicans" on that trail you were on at Linville Falls.
Thanks to you guys I'll be leaving in mid June for a two to three month cross country trip. I'm in Jersey so I'll be heading down to the SLD and BRP. I would love to cook at the campsites but have no ideal how to keep eggs and perishables fresh. I lost 50 lbs since Dec 23 on a conavore diet. I eat meat and eggs (mostly). I would love to stay on this diet but I doubting it's possible. Well, I have until June 15 to figure it out. I'll just get fat again if I have to. Would be amazing to bump into you guys on the road.
I certainly take my hat off to y’all for enduring the difficulties of motorcycle traveling and camping. At my age (65) I have become a recreational rider. I go for my ride on sundays when traffic is less and I also stick to the backroads and out of city congestion. I’m enjoying my new r1250gs and realize it’s far more capable than I am of travel. I bought it for the comfort not distance. When I get home after my typical 100 mile journey the first thing I do is head for the shower. That may be the hardest thing for me to overcome in your adventure and that would be a consistent source of hot running water and fresh clothing. I don’t think I could pull it off even if I was 30 again.
Perfectly Normal when you are Exploring. You won't remember the curves, but you will remember the stops and the detours.
Thanks for stopping at Metal Ford on the Trace.
We stopped there 25years ago and it was very cool, but we kinda forgot about it.
My family has had three outings there since your posting on it.
The Buffalo River Is Awesome.
I am Looking for a pair of air shocks I have that have 2,000 miles on them. Free99.
Currently M I A. Lost in the Abyss. When I locate them I will reconnect.
Franklin,Tn 😎
Im old school and still use maps. I buy DeLorme, state by state maps. I enjoy out of the way roads and the more corners the better. Sit down after dinner with my favorite beverage, find the most squiggly lines and hook 'em up. Get lost? Not if I have gas. No signal, dead battery, sun on your screen? No problem. BRP was empty last time I was in that area due to pandemic but was to foggy to ride 1/2 the time. That whole area is OMG riding and is a riot to explore. Smaller roads that are not on popular maps or apps are less crowded, have great home cooking, good coffee and...pie. I'll be down after Labor Day and don't have to return until I'm cornered out.
Loved the app that traced your ride! I’ve used Revit but yours is way cooler. The BRP is biker heaven. Did it in May this year and continued cross country 2-up for over 10,000 miles through June.
My wife and I enjoy your video’s so much! ( she is not a motorcycle person) Inspired me to plan a week long trip next spring by myself of course. Not sure I want to do the camping thing yet but will decide later. Good luck and stay safe!!
Awesome David. If I could suggest, bring the tents stuff so if it looks like a good place go for other wise enjoy the ride. 👍
In June 2021, my brother and I and three of our friends rode from wester NY to Maggie Valley for a week of riding around the Smokies. We jumped on the Blue Ridge for part of the ride only to find it was closed for a bicycle race. We got off, rode a few miles and jumped back on and found out it was closed there too. You're right, they don't give good detour directions for the closed Parkway. Ride safe.
Thanks for sharing - we think you missed seeing some amazing places- like Little Switzerland (small but near) and Blowing Rock! Perhaps you could message your viewers before you head out for the “must do” stops along your routes!!! The BRP is the most beautiful road in the US! No stop lights and few stop signs!!
Caverns. Yalls reward should be a big jar of Grannies remedy. Wheels though Time motorcycle Museum.
Yes we have been there it’s a cool place
end of last October did the Blue Ridge Parkway for fall colors. Spent a hr at little Switzerland and that was to long!
I really do hope y'all camp at Willville Motorcycle Camp just west of the Parkway in Meadows of Dan in Virginia.
I would love to be in N.C. Enjoy yourself.
Not sure why you went back to tent camping. When you had the truck and camper, it made a lot of sense to us. We bought a toy hauler and plan on doing what you guys were doing when we retire. We're too old to be setting up a tent and sleeping on the ground all the time. Sleeping in a camper, with all the benefits that it brings, appeals much more to us than tent camping. You have our respect doing what you're doing, and we hope you keep the adventures coming.
That road you took through little Switzerland is 226a . It is called the diamondback. The main attraction in that town is the Switzerland Inn, it has a few stores and an ice cream parlor along with a great little pub and restaurant.
BRP from Boone To Cherokee NC = THE BEST RIDE. BRP north on Va side not near as nice/ scenic. Tail of Dragon down pass Cherokee… way too dangerous (been there twice and was almost taken out by other rides trying to race from one end to the other both times, so riders beware!). Enjoy your videos!
Ouray Colorado also called "Switzerland of America".
Use the Blue Ridge Parkway map, it is very useful with detailed mileposts. My favorite road.
My wife and I have been following you guys through this whole pandemic.
Thanks so much for getting us through.
Love your content and look forward to rhe next videos.
Keep up the great work.
If you had not made a u-turn it would have taken you to little Switzerland. That road you were on was The Diamond back.
Hope your foot gets back to normal, I have a bone spur from a previous break and I can’t walk more than about 1/2 mile before I start limping, the break was 4 years ago …
Take care …
🙏🙏
There were some really beautiful views on this one. What a crazy and awesome ride! Finally proof that the earth is flat 🤣🤣
luck people autumn is knocking on the door here in Scotland
You guys seemed happier with the camper. I know this way is cheaper due to the high rise in price of gas. You could find a place and stay for a week or two with the camper and ride all the roads in the area. That would help with the cost of gas, and you would still get to stay in the camper. The Tennessee area you are in this video would have been perfect for something like that.
