I def agree about there’s no consequences anymore. It bothers me when kids who don’t deserve it get “extra free time or extra recess” I hate it so much. Like what about the kids who actually are doing the right thing?? Ugh

I had SEVERE behavior issues last year. So bad I couldn’t finish the year. I could no longer bring myself to go every day and deal with it. My admin were non supportive. I was known for having good classroom management. I had a great reward system. I had a dangerous student, too. I do not plan on returning to teaching and it devastates me.
This past year was my first year of teaching. Every time I called the office for behaviors, there were no consequences and my admin usually blamed me, even when there was clearly nothing I could have done to prevent it. I am switching schools and grade levels this year and praying it’ll be enough to make my excitement for teaching come back🤞🏻Another year like last year will result in me stepping away from the profession for sure. 😔

I feel this in my soul!!! I am going into my 5th year, and these last 2 years have been rough! I started this career LOVING it, and I felt like being a teacher was my identity and I was so proud of it, but like you, having endured so much disrespect, and sooo many behaviors, my joy has faded so much, and it makes me sad. You’re not alone! I sadly experienced a challenging school year in 5th grade dealing with a lot of fires each and every day which was physically and emotionally exhausting. As you mentioned, kids were not getting proper consequences for their actions and I felt horrible for my kids who also did the right thing bc I truly believe they’re the ones who suffered the most. I also wished for Friday’s PD days & any break I could take. I never experienced anxiety until this year and it caused me not to be able to eat during the school day. Next year I’m slated to be in kindergarten which is a whole new world for me but I’m trusting in God! I am so glad that you were able to make it through the school bc I bet you were like me & seriously considered quitting midway through after realizing things just weren’t going to get better.

I took an 8 month and came back as a long term sub in February. And yes its the entire education system and how its viewing kids as $$ instead of kids who need to learn that there are consequences to our actions. I love teaching but feeling drained by the other stuff. Hopefully this new grade level I will be stepping into will be better. 😊

I left teaching October 2021 in my 10th year. I couldn't handle the workload and zero consequences for students anymore... among other things. I am a truck driver now and I love it! Best. Decision. Ever.

You are clearly a loving and compassionate educator. This is my 30th year of teaching. This was my first year I have had behavior issues in my classroom that reached the level you're describing. I absolutely understand the powerlessness you felt and the grief and frustration over teaching in an unsafe environment due to the behavior of specific students. It is scarring for all involved and such an incredible shame violent students are allowed in classrooms. It truly disgusts me. At the same time, I still love teaching. It sounds like you do, too. Teaching is not for everyone. You have to be super strong and push forward. I've been teaching for the past 29 years and have seen my share of serious behavior problems with and without the best support from administrators. Administrators come and go as do our students each year. You have to roll with the punches and not fold when the going gets tough. You are really young and just not experienced enough to know what you are capable of doing. It was probably wise for you to leave this field. Every occupation presents challenges. It's really up to you to gain increased self confidence and grit.
I don’t know whether to give this video a thumbs up or thumbs down because you totally made this video with a lot of grace and I feel you on the support issues. I’ve learned that Teaching is not who I am and quite literally just what I do. Do I try to do my best, sure. But, I refuse to let it engulf me. I had a horrible first three years with admin that was even worse than yours (It was a charter school so they would say things like “Do I not pay you enough”?) I left that place and found my current school where although not perfect, it is def. much better. I completely understand the trouble of wanting time to fly bc of teaching but in real life you would love to enjoy the time in your life. I will be honest, although my school is much better… I do want to have a different position in the school- not be a regular classroom teacher but be a cluster teacher instead. Teach one subject to several different classes/grades. Im basically trying to find the sweet spot in the career for myself. We shall see. I am so glad that you decided to choose yourself because again, you are more than just a teacher. Enjoy your break and keep us updated!

I'm incredibly happy for you! You took every word out my mouth of why I dislike the profession on top of the low pay. My first year I was "Professionally bullied". I was severely micromanaged and traumatized to the point I wasn't eating,coming out of my room, or socializing with my family. I'm going into my fourth year Teaching High school Spanish. I pray for a bright year while planning my exit strategy.
We’re literally the same person, i never imagined that my mind would change about teaching. I felt the exact same way. You lasted longer than I did though! I was in a private preschool it was all year around and got no summer break!! and I lasted for 7 months, I took the job out of fear. And it was the worst experience… I have a few more weeks left until I’m completely out of that job. It’s also an hour to two hour commute, i would cry all the time coming home. I liked how you mentioned that you’re a joyful person and find joy. I believe in that. And I just couldn’t at this job, thank you for sharing, I felt that I was the only one!!

This is exactly what I'm going through now, this year is completely different for most of the teachers. And the school management is completely unsupportive. I started this career with so much of passion and dream. this is my 3rd year being a teacher but I'm already exhausted and depressed. Yep 🙃 and then their test scores are alll on me. It was just so much pressure. I do have some teacher friends that are already loving their new schools so that gives me hope at least.
I’m starting my first year of teaching in August and I’m super excited. Your video doesn’t scare me, but it does help to open my eyes and be prepared. But at the same time, I’ve been really miserable at my current job for a couple years now. I currently feel how you felt.. like waking up dreading go to work. Also, my current job is so laborious. I’m on my feet for 8 hours, dealing with rude customers in retail. My back hurts, I get migraines. The pay isn’t there. It’s really awful. Most days I hate my job and my health is declining because of it. I graduated college and now I’m hoping teaching will give me a fresh perspective and I’ve also heard amazing things about the school I got hired at. I get what you mean about not receiving the support from your admin team. I teach 6th grade and I had a lot of behavior issues in one of my 6 classes. I would send the kid to the office and they would come back behaving the same or worst!!

I witnessed a similar situation where I was in a classroom where a girl told a student “ I’m going to kill you”. And I’m only a Substitute TA ! Later on, I heard that the parents of the girl literally spoils her and she’s been evaluated as well but still no consequences. I believe everything you said !

Jacqueline you remind me of myself six years ago. Teaching was such a huge part of my identity. Like you I had administrator who were not supportive and would belittle me. I started to loose my passion for teaching also. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to become a director a a private program. I took on the job with one promise that I would never forget how terrible those past principles made me feel. I always want to be a support to our educators. I am now a mother and i myself would be very disappointed if i had to send my children to the local school. The amount of violence children are exposed to in school is so sad. Children should feel safe at school and excited to develop thier love for learning but thag is just not the case. My daughter turned 5 today and i will be homeschooling her for as long as we can. Thankfully my current position understands that I am at my best capacity when i know ive taken care of my own children first! I can tell you that God works in a beautiful way. Everything i experianced as an educator was my broken path leading me to open my eyes on how to best educate my children. As teachers we call the students our children but reality is there not our kids! We are only in thier life for a tiny snapshot of thier lives. But as you maybe blessed to become a mother one day your passion for teaching maybe sparked once again as mine has with my babies. I hope this gives you hope because i can see your spark has been dimmed a little. Your a beautiful person and your light still shines through! Enjoy your time to rest and recover!

Insightful video and very eye opening. I think parents/guardians forget that education and learing continue outside of school as well. Crazy how much the school support system has done a complete 360 with proving support to its teachers. Such a shame since our kids are losing out on great role models. Hopefully things are turned around when you consider to go back into the classroom. Would you consider going back to graduate school and maybe work in a different area/field in education?
24 year veteran here and yes after the pandemic it has been insane the behaviors I am sticking it out only because I’m close to retirement..I tell young teachers like yourself …RUN do what makes you happy …this is not it…you can’t fix a broken system & classroom management can’t fix it 👎🏽 thank goodness you left
"there are no consequences" "no support"... yes, oh my goodness, exactly!! I teach high school and I caught students vaping in the bathroom, reported it, nothing happened. Student walked out of my class, reported it, came back the next day with zero consequences. This is only the tip of the iceberg. I'm doing one more year just to see what happens. I still passion for it. I just know I'm not going to be a teacher forever so maybe a year to see if I can handle it. But I agree, I don't want to wish my life away, live for the weekends, sadly, not worth it for a career.

Nowadays elementary has no discipline and it’s terrible! It makes me sad because I really wanted to teach elementary my whole life, but after subbing for elementary, I have seen what I needed to see.
I work as a teachers assistent and in my school there was a child, 9 years, that brought a sharp kitchen knife to school and threatended to kill a teacher when he was not allowed to be on his ipad.

I do have some teacher friends that are already loving their new schools so that gives me hope at least.
I’m starting my first year of teaching in August and I’m super excited. Your video doesn’t scare me, but it does help to open my eyes and be prepared.
But at the same time, I’ve been really miserable at my current job for a couple years now. I currently feel how you felt.. like waking up dreading go to work. Also, my current job is so laborious. I’m on my feet for 8 hours, dealing with rude customers in retail. My back hurts, I get migraines. The pay isn’t there. It’s really awful. Most days I hate my job and my health is declining because of it.
I graduated college and now I’m hoping teaching will give me a fresh perspective and I’ve also heard amazing things about the school I got hired at.
I wish you the best of luck and thanks for being real with us. I didn’t expect this video from you, after watching some of your older videos, but I do understand your reality. There’s nothing worse than staying stagnant in a place where you can’t thrive
Best of luck to you!🤍 I will say, my first 2 years of teaching were a dream come true. I loved going to work & teaching. My last year was just very very different & I do think if I would’ve given it another shot at another school, maybe I would’ve loved it all over again. Who knows! But I hope you get to experience all the good parts of it 🤍
I get what you mean about not receiving the support from your admin team. I teach 6th grade and I had a lot of behavior issues in one of my 6 classes. I would send the kid to the office and they would come back behaving the same or worst!!
Yep. In my case, they would purposely make poor choices so that they can go to the office to get a reward 🤦🏻♀️

I totally support your decision. You definitely deserve a break. I’m shocked that ASSAULT is taken so lightly. That is dangerously irresponsible. Your principal should have been fired.

Thank you! I totally agree. I was offered a position at a private school and almost took it until I realized how much lower private school teachers get paid. $25k salary for example 😳

I witnessed a similar situation where I was in a classroom where a girl told a student “ I’m going to kill you”. And I’m only a Substitute TA ! Later on, I heard that the parents of the girl literally spoils her and she’s been evaluated as well but still no consequences. I believe everything you said !

I respect your choice sorry that you had a classroom from hell. My last years third grade math class was like that. I switch mid-year to kindergarten. The best thing I ever did. Stay strong good luck. Your right your self care is more important.

Jacqueline you remind me of myself six years ago. Teaching was such a huge part of my identity. Like you I had administrator who were not supportive and would belittle me. I started to loose my passion for teaching also. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to become a director a a private program. I took on the job with one promise that I would never forget how terrible those past principles made me feel. I always want to be a support to our educators. I am now a mother and i myself would be very disappointed if i had to send my children to the local school. The amount of violence children are exposed to in school is so sad. Children should feel safe at school and excited to develop thier love for learning but thag is just not the case.
My daughter turned 5 today and i will be homeschooling her for as long as we can. Thankfully my current position understands that I am at my best capacity when i know ive taken care of my own children first!
I can tell you that God works in a beautiful way. Everything i experianced as an educator was my broken path leading me to open my eyes on how to best educate my children. As teachers we call the students our children but reality is there not our kids! We are only in thier life for a tiny snapshot of thier lives. But as you maybe blessed to become a mother one day your passion for teaching maybe sparked once again as mine has with my babies. I hope this gives you hope because i can see your spark has been dimmed a little. Your a beautiful person and your light still shines through! Enjoy your time to rest and recover!

Insightful video and very eye opening. I think parents/guardians forget that education and learing continue outside of school as well. Crazy how much the school support system has done a complete 360 with proving support to its teachers. Such a shame since our kids are losing out on great role models. Hopefully things are turned around when you consider to go back into the classroom. Would you consider going back to graduate school and maybe work in a different area/field in education?
It definitely takes a village. Working in a different field in education isn't really a thought right now, but we'll see!
24 year veteran here and yes after the pandemic it has been insane the behaviors I am sticking it out only because I’m close to retirement..I tell young teachers like yourself …RUN do what makes you happy …this is not it…you can’t fix a broken system & classroom management can’t fix it 👎🏽 thank goodness you left

"there are no consequences" "no support"... yes, oh my goodness, exactly!! I teach high school and I caught students vaping in the bathroom, reported it, nothing happened. Student walked out of my class, reported it, came back the next day with zero consequences. This is only the tip of the iceberg. I'm doing one more year just to see what happens. I still passion for it. I just know I'm not going to be a teacher forever so maybe a year to see if I can handle it. But I agree, I don't want to wish my life away, live for the weekends, sadly, not worth it for a career.
I hope this school year is different for you! I'm hearing a lot of teachers say the same thing, that they're giving it one last shot this year. I'm hoping something changes. Best of luck to you this year and take care of yourself. 🤍

I would definitely recommend trying high school if you are willing! I always hear great things from teachers who moved from elementary to high school.
Nowadays elementary has no discipline and it’s terrible! It makes me sad because I really wanted to teach elementary my whole life, but after subbing for elementary, I have seen what I needed to see.
