I went to my local guitar store this weekend and happened to find the SJ-200 Orianthi and the SJ-200 Standard - HANDS DOWN - Orianthi was a winner, playability, tone, tuners, look and feel...it had it all...to me it was the best one of the shoot out that I did which also included a few others like Guild and Yamaha and even a $3k Taylor Builers Ed....great choice !! and the Red - Killer ! You guys did a great job of showcasing this - really enjoy your work - keep it up - thank you 🙂 !!

Really enjoy your videos, guys. One thing to me that makes a big difference in these two models is ebony vs. rosewood on the fretboard. Rosewood on the Original gives that classic, warm SJ-200 tone where the ebony on the Orianthi may sound a little brighter. Different sounds - both great!

Great to hear Cooper with Chris' bright (not red) voice this morning! After working two evening services Friday evening, followed by two morning services downtown (sidewalk shoveling light powder snow for a change), we were still on our game, but relaxed and having fun. Looking forward to a real cold snap this week... more guitar, less shoveling! 🤠🤘 Hauoli Makahiki Hou 2022! (and back to school crossing guard fun in the mornings). Mahalo, y'all!

To my ears the standard model sounds better, warm and rounded, not as harsh as the custom, especially while playing with a plectrum.

The orianthi somehow sounded unimpressive in this video. I have both and my orianthi sounds much better than the one in this videos. The original is warm and mellow while the orianthi has more clarity and definition. The orianthi is more responsive than the original. Additionally, the orianthi is an attention getter and it really stands out among my other guitars. It’s worth mentioning that the orianthi is the only sj200 with AAA graded woods.

When it comes to maple, Gibson sj200’s are hard to beat although Guild f55 maple guitars are also great. I don’t own Guild f55 maple but have two sj200’s one of which is the orianthi. It doesn’t seem right to own another maple jumbo while I already have two great sj200’s. Sometimes in the future I’ll probably own a Guild f55 maple :)

For a moment, I thought Chris liked the red one more because it was in his lap (the one you're playing). I listened without looking and the Custom Shop red definitely sounds better. Scale length? I've tried that Gibson SJ-200 and had hand issues with the neck. Good comparison. Thanks

Nice playing, Cooper! I have wanted a J200 ever since hearing Pete Townsend play “Behind Blue Eyes”, 50 years ago. Retiring in a week, kids are finished with college, and are both gainfully employed, so now can actually afford one. But, moving to Phoenix, where humidity is often under 10%, so am worried. I have always lived in cities with perfect acoustic guitar humidity, so have never had to humidify a guitar… just hang them on the wall, always ready to play. Sold my wood guitars, and ordered a RainSong jumbo. But, after watching this, I realize I still want a J200… Maybe will try a mid priced all solid wood guitar first, to see if I can handle the humidification duties in the Sonoran Desert before buying a J200…?

Humidifying a guitar in a desert climate isn’t hard. I use Kyser’s sound hole humidifier in my Lowden and Avalon for years and they work great.

I tried a brand new SG-200 custom shop, all high figure maple and cant remember the top. That was around year 2000. I also tried other SG-200 but standard ones and i didnt like them too much say compare to high models or Larrivée, Taylor and Martin.
But, that custom shop maple was gorgeous and the best sound I can remember. I should have buy it. Still regretit today.

Gibson should always offer a clear maple option to every SJ200. I dig the custom inlay, ebony bridge and binding, but I’m not all in on that much red on a guitar that big,

MSRPs on Gibson website are $5500 for the original and $6500 for the orianthi. You can probably get one for a couple hundred dollars below MSRP at your local guitar shop.

The Orianthi seems to be the perfekt Lady guitar. The best Lady guitar in the world. The ES335 Neck with the a bit more narrow nut and the Lotus flower, the AAA spruce and the red ... perfekt for a Lady. For me? No, I dont want to play a Lady guitar. I have my J200 in autumn sunburst with a 45mm nut, and I love it 🙂
