Publishing your book in the right category is vital if you are going to get more people finding your book and therefore making more sales. If you choose the right category there’s also a better chance of earning the 'Best Seller’ badge and as a consequence making more sales and therefore more money.

Hi Paul! first of all congratulations for your channel and all your work! I think it´s awesome! I want to get into KDP also, and I remember I found some time back a set of videos where you were explaining every step of how this works, from opening an amazon account, choosing the nice, the tools to use (free and pay), measurments, how to upload, how to choose the title and keywords, etc....but I can´t find it anymore. Thank you Captain ...i think the best method is the paid one with publisher rocket because it will give you the categories and the competition in each one and how much you have to sell to get to the first place and once you determine which categories are relevant and have low competition then you email KDP to put you on that categories but unfortunately not everyone have Publisher Rocket.

You replied in the comments that KDP is starting to clamp down on people placing their book in irrelevant categories. Now, a year later, does not seem to be happening! You say you never got the best seller badge for your low content books (hard to believe!) But you also said that you stick to the rules and only put your books in relevant categories and only choose 2. So, the morale of this story is that those who are gaming the system and getting that badge by cheating are winning! Should be an easy fix for Amazon, you say their algorithm is able to detect irrelevant keywords and as a result relegate our books into oblivion so, how come they can't do the same with categories, seems even easier??? As you said they are starting to crack down, ok it's cracked, let's fix it now. Another great video, thanks.
They send out warnings and sometimes they close accounts due to the problem.

Hi Paul, I uploaded a journal today and it wouldn't let me submit it because the pages were blank inside. I'm not sure how to get around this when I want it to be a blank journal. Will Amazon not allow any more blank journal submissions? Is there a way to submit the book as hard bound. I want to do these blank journals, but I can't get past the previewer without adding a grid or lines to the interior. Thank you! Any help would be amazing.

Wow this is just what I asked you for. The only thing is the trouble I'm having is when I did make a list based off of other books similar to mine the categories that they were in I could not find when I went through the KDP category list.

Many categories actually don’t show up in the list under your library when you upload a book. You actually have to go to the Amazon website and look for Departments - Books on the sidebar and find categories there, then you email kdp customer service through the publishing dashboard (all the way on the bottom “contact us”) click on “Amazon product page and Expanded Distribution” and then click “Update Amazon Categories” a message window pops up and just follow the instructions to request the categories you want for your book. 😊
They may be categories that amazon have put them in after the publisher has emailed them.

Wow! So I have to be honest and say I'm not certain if I didn't see this video or if I avoided it lol . I have been avoiding these very important things for some time .. now that I've started taking it serious it's crazy how important it really is and how much has been going over my head lol Ive had book bolt this entire time and did not use the catagory tool until now! Thank you for this video , but I think you need to refresh it. I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong or Amazon has changed and you can’t see other peoples’ categories.
The categories list did change recently.
I have noticed that publisher rocket gives me categories that are not available to select from when putting in the info for my book. Is there a way to work around this? Send an email to KDP support?
When you want to add more categories by contacting Amazon support, should you go as far down into subcategories as possible or are there times when you should be more general in your subcategories? Which would benefit your book more? Thanks.
I would narrow down more. Will likely have a better chance of ranking higher in that category.

Hi Paul, I am in the process of writing a non-fiction on customer service. I went to amazon, clicked on books, and got cuss word journals that had nothing to =do with customer service thrown right in my face. I was so mad and disgusted.

Hey, so I have a question. The scissor Skills book that has been #1 for some time ( you talked about it with the fox) is in the category "children's jewelry and crafts" but it looks like it's not in a book category. So I went to categories on my dash board and I could not find a children's jewelry craft category. I tried using my book bolt and it also can not find that category. So I'm confused 🤔.. any idea?
They probably requested it by emailing KDP support.
Hi Paul, thank you for your technique. I totallty agree witth that. But I think you dont talk about the trickiest part of the process: the amazon categories that you choose with your 3 techniques are NOT the same than the KDP categories that I can choose when I publish my book. So how do you do that step (conversion of amazon category TO KDP category)? Thx from France for your help man and for your very good videos!
If you find categories that are not the same as your categories in the KDP dashboard you can email KDP support, after publication, to put your book in the category you want.
@@paulmarles Thanks man! I think it's important to be noted because there are about 4000 KDP categories and... about 16000 Amazon categories. Did you already try to do that with Amazon? Do you know if we can give them some "not relevant" categories as we've noted that we can rank good in these ones? ;-)
what if your category isn't listed in the drop down menu? for instance, I can't find a category that says Notebooks / journal writing!! .... even though you can see that category under books that are already on Amazon. Thanks
You can email KDP support asking them to put the book in additional categories.
There are different categories in each country. Does it make sense to ask for a change in category for each country or just the US?

My question is why is the new category not visible or available to select when I create a new book, or update my existing books? Thanks.
The selections offered are what are called standard BISAC categories. However, Amazon has more categories that they can place your book in that are not selectable from that list.

Hey Paul - Have you ever had problems with KDP support adding additional categories? I asked for a Notebook to be entered into Toys & Games > Reading & Writing > Diaries,
Journals & Notebooks and was rejected. They refused and advised - "We take any manipulation of the system very seriously and work hard to protect the revenues of our authors". They added, they can ONLY add books to the Book department category.
It's a simple, kid-friendly Notebook and all the details (Title/Subtitle) are relevant. I'm not trying to cheat the system. It's not like I asked for it go into Automation -> Tyres & Wheels! It's a Notebook!?
I've been back and forth a few times. I just don't get them.
I've never tried to put my books in additional categories. I they said no I wouldn't push it.

Just choose the 2 categories that you think are most applicable.

The lower the BSR the more books are selling.
So, you are advising we see a prospect in lower BSR.
Where do I manually enter the categories I've chosen?
On the first page of the KDP dashboard near the bottom of the page.
I wish it were easier to find appropriate categories for journals and notebooks.
Don’t worry too much about the categories.
The only problem is that some of these categories don't exist in the kdp dashboard. For instance, self help-journal writing is not an option. That's the main category I would use I think. So I'm left wondering which options are actually available which are found in a method like yours.
The only oprions available are the ones in the list. If you want to go in other categories not listed you would have to email KDP Support.

Sometimes Amazon puts them in other categories automatically or authors write to KDP support and ask to be put in other categories.

Some categories you can only get by emailing KDP support. Also KDP sometimes put books in categories themselves that are not available in the drop down list.

Any category you feel is relevant. Look at the categories other publishers of coloring books publish in.
