  • In this video I will show you how to take a cheap wifi adapter and turn it into a longer range more useful adapter. Total cost less than £5.
    The one I used has the RT5370 wireless chipset it is a generic cheap adapter from China.

    I just finished the construction of my own sardine antenna following these instructions.... I can say this antenna is by far the best option when you consider gain over size!! I can say my tests are quite similar... it went from a 0% signal with the native antenna to a solid 72% while testing on my neighbors router signal!! Outstanding!!

    After watching most of your videos over the last few months i decided to build my own Biquad Sardine (well Mackerel) can antenna. It didn't turn out as good looking as yours however i can now pickup wifi signals nearly 900ft away from the house. thx for all the great instructional videos

    I pick up 40 2.4Ghz WiFi hotspots via my bedroom windowsill using a Alfa AWUS036NHA with the default 5 Dbi dipole antenna, but none, except my own, are strong enough to attempt a connection, -72 being the next strongest to my own. I use LinSSID on Linux as my scan software. I am considering an external parabolic set up to try and access my local shopping centre with the numerous free hotspots available there.

    Great Videos! Because of you, I found out that some of the cheap 5ghz wifi dongles are using 2.4 ghz antennas! A simple deduction of the length made the connection and speed properties double. Thanks for the info & keep the videos comming! Next experiment for me is to try out one your 5.8ghz Biquad designs.

    andrew mcneil Great job. I am very impressed with the sardine can biquad antenna. I think I will built one like this instead of the bulkier cantenna antenna.

    Love it. what software are you using to switch from internal to external? or is it just on the computer itself. not sure if you covered the topic in another video.

    I would have preferred a comparison vs another external antenna rather than an internal one.

    Can this be done with an Altoids tin? What would the measurements be?

    • @andrewmcneil
      @andrewmcneil  Před 10 lety

      If the tin is large enough to fit the element then yes. Sounds like a good idea.

    I bring you a new kind of antenna for you to build and review:
    www.moxonantennaproject.com/design.htm
    It's mainly used for Ham radio, but the software can make the calculations for 2450MHz, so why not give it a try?
