A few years back I was hunting my lease in 5 degree weather by myself. I busted a hole in front of the blind and made my set. I doubled up the first pair and was very excited. As I went to retrieve the birds, a pane of ice went in between my legs and I fell in ALL the way. My waders filled up, but luckily I was in 4ft of water so I could stand up and I made my way back to the blind. Panic mode started setting in and I was shivering. I got on my quad and raced back to the lodge and luckily was able to get there, strip down, and hop in a sleeping bag to slowly warm up. God was watching over me that day. I'm thankful it wasn't worse. God bless you Bobby! These stories need to be shared for awareness! Thank you!

#4.....snap on the "kill switch" lanyard!!!
Glad you mentioned the belt for waders!!! They will float you if they are cinched up tight around your waist
As a Firefighter in an area with lots of water, Chesapeake Bay and it's tributaries, we are trained to survive in turnout gear if we fall in the water. It can all be used as flotation gear if you know how. A fact l had reinforced after falling into indoor pool in a smoked out basement. I had trained on what to do, I did what I was trained to do, and I survived to pass the word.
Good on you for giving Tyler's story a wide audience!!!

Good topic Bobby. Glad he made it through a difficult situation. A few months back had an older duck hunter tell me during general conversation, to be careful in the march, since a lot of duck hunters have drown over the years.
I'm a pretty good swimmer. Rescue diver certified through PADI many years ago. Have saved people from drowning before. I'm new to duck hunting, and from my canoe days I always wear my life vest in my boat. (Had hunters ask me if I could swim because I had my PFD on... LOL. I just said a little!) Got a kayak in 2020 because my canoe is a little heavy for me now. Searched all over to find a life vest that was comfortable enough to wear for hours. That really help's.
I'm new to Jon boats and long tail mud motors also. I realized the first time out on a lake getting used to my set-up that I'm glad I installed a "Grab Handle" on my boat floor, and that a motor kill switch is a must have! Those long tail props can hurt you bad as they spin in the water at 1600 rpm or more! Personal safety needs to be the first priority, and hunting/fishing after that. Just the other day I vacuumed sealed both my boat and blind first aid kits/fire making tools, since they always like to take on water when I'm in the marsh!
    Rangers... Lead the Way!

On Dec 31, 1998, I was making an afternoon hunt, nothing was flying. So my buddy who was 16 at the time went check out another spot to hunt the next couple of days (water level was changing) on the way back I hit a cypress stump to when the motor kicked up and hit my left leg nearly cutting it off. we tied a shirt and applied a tourniquet. I always have my cell phone and at the time marine radios. I knew we had help coming but still was 45 minutes to an hour before I say someone who wasn't a paramedic. The moral of the story don't ever think it can happen to you, ALWAYS WEAR YOUR LIFE JACKET AND AKE SURE THE KILL SWITCH WORKS. thanks for sharing your friends story and glad he's alright, it only takes a second for you to be as safe as you can and less than a second for something to happen that can change your life....

I live in Nebraska right at the Platte/Loup River tail race and it can get very dicey out there and water levels and many other variables can sneak up and take you out. Bobby- thanx for discussing this! I just got back from ND- I had a sailor swan sailed way out on Devils Lake. It’s North Dakota so you know it’s windy and I’m in a flat bottom duck boat. I wanted to do the right thing and get the bird but the rollers had me worried. Decided on no chances- rolled the waders down to waist, put on a life jacket and attached the kill switch!! So important!!! Thank god he survived!! Oh yeah, I found the swan among the white caps- took a while lol.

My taxidermist tells a similar story. They were in a blind with a boat hide on a guided duck hunt in a bay on the Atlantic. It was late in the winter and waters were insanely cold. Sun came up and they noticed the boat 50 yards away; the guide forgot to tie it up. Guide tried to hail a buddy on the radio but couldn’t and finally decided he was going to swim for it. My taxidermist said 20 yards in he just stopped moving all together. Imagine being stuck there unable to help. Horrible. Water is deadly. Two days before my guided hunt in Chincoteague VA last year a few young hunters flipped an overloaded boat close to land, two of the young guys (19-20) died.

Great to hear everything turned out OK for him. I hunt some pretty large water in Minnesota quite often and too many times I've seen people going out in fairly small boats that they overload with gear. They only have 5 or 6 inches of freeboard left and they can't even get their boat on plane or get the front end up. I run a deep wide 16 foot with a 50 hp on it. Sometimes I can't conceal my boat as well as the guys with smaller shallower draft boats but I know if the weather starts turning ugly if I have to I can make it where I have to go safely and quickly.

Thank you Bobby for continuing with these types of videos and of hunter safety. Love the message you continue to preach after all these years through your channel. Another huge piece of advice I was told years ago when I started hunting is carry a sharp pocket knife in your waders for this exact terrible scenario. A couple hundred dollar pair of waders isn’t worth your life. Have a fighting chance to cut off your waders if they fill with water. May help save your life one day. Thank you again

Well spoken words, Bobby. We had thought that life jackets would be essential perhaps also a whistle around the neck or attach a light up to a marker buoy in the boat to make it easy to spot, or even a flare if it can be contained in a safe pocket or tin. We're sure that more regular sailors may have other suggestions that would be very useful! We're glad everyone came out ok at the end of the ordeal!! Malc and Ann, England xxx ps any water shallow or deep is a potential danger!!!!!

Hey bobby, just saying last year last day of duck season it was -15 Celsius up here in Ontario, I was hunting a medium size river with ice flows in it, I went to retrieve a downed duck and lost my footing, I went under water and my wadders filled up and I started going down river with the river, I luckily managed to get to the edge but the scariest moment I have ever had and all it took was a slip of the foot on a rock, and my buddy watching me go down river helpless, so just to let everyone know it takes a split second and your life can change our sport is great but also no joke!!!

Very good info. Another thing to think about is getting into a stop the bleed course. I’m sure you probably have a first aid kit nearby when your hunting but if you don’t know how to use a tourniquet property and quickly you will watch a guy bleed out in a matter of a couple minutes. Even if you get the tourniquet on quickly your at an elevated risk of hypothermia. If nothing els talk to a local Law Enforcement Officer he should have a good understanding of what kind of and how to use a tourniquet. Stay Safe!

It's not just big water that can be dangerous. Last year, I took my canoe out duck hunting on a creek that was maybe 20ft wide and about waist deep. I came up to what amounted to a low-head dam made from sharp rocks. Instead of taking a chance on cutting my canoe on the rocks, I decided to walk the canoe over the rock dam. I checked the water depth with my paddle before getting out so I knew I could stand on the bottom. What I did not know is that the other side of this makeshift dam was dredged out. One step after crossing the dam, I could no longer touch the bottom. I hung on to the side of the canoe and was able to swim my way over to the bank, but it was a little scary there for a minute or two. My brand new CO2 inflatable life vest you might ask? In the canoe.

Happy that everything turned out ok. One thing when using watercraft and as cumbersome or inconvenient as it may be some manufacturers make them for their products but with a length of vinyl coated spiral cable with enough tensile strength to pull you watercraft look one end with a lockable carabiner for you wader or jacket and the other end looped to the key to the motor. Both secured with crimping ferrels. If to fall out conscience or not your chances in team tremendously retrieving the boat and get back on increase that having a runaway boat and it’s a distance from shore.

He was was with a friend deep in the marsh (way before cell phones)they were having an epic hunt as an artic front came through...they stayed too long and the front blew out all the water. not throwing rocks, good video. One key point is you mentioned when he fell out, the boat kept going. Then you mentioned he held on to a gas tank. If the motor was still running when he fell out, he did not have the kill switch attached to him. I see lots of hunters, even my hunt buddy, not attaching the motor kill switch to their clothing. Do it, even in the shallow marsh. Attach the motor kill switch to your body - life jacket is a great place to hook it to.

If you could get the parties together to talk about their experience-I think would be a interesting podcast or youtube live video.

    Great story.
#4 connect the kill switch for the outboard or mud motor to whoever is running the boat.

One of my family friends was out one night for the Minnesota opener a few years back. The season opened at 12 am and they wanted to do that. So it was still super cold. Out in the middle of Mille lacs these three are sitting in the middle of the night, nobody in sight, in snow, when a big wave catches the small John boat they were in. The boat flipped over upside down. Three men out far from shore in freezing temps holding onto the boat. After a while my family friend and his friend decided one stays on the boat and two would try to swim in. They started to swim. All the way back to shore. They made it. This shows the importance of wearing a life jacket. Another thing that they didn’t do is panic. Do not panic what ever you do.

Stepped into a bottomless hole in a cedar swamp wearing waders 7 years ago. Panicked and swam forward instead of turning around the way I came... big mistake. It just got deeper and deeper. 10 mins of swimming got me to a stump in the water and that stump saved my ass. Water was so cold, I instantly had a hard time breathing/catching my breath. Couldn't pull myself out of the water or yell for help. Luckily my buddy came looking for me after realizing I was gone to long. Saved my life for sure. Can't imagine 2+ hrs. Glad he's okay!

This is Erie to hear.. I almost died (I think) the same way but fell off my kayak when it got swamped over by wind and waves and a big miscalculation on my part. Thank goodness for that price of foam on the tip that I held onto so I didn't go straight down! Scary stuff!

If the boat is moving, the life jacket is on and the tether to kill the motor is attached. As un-cool as that sounds. Grew up fishing and hunting on the great lakes and have been ejected from a moving boat in rough water trying to beat a storm that quickly popped up (sudden severe thunderstorms happen fairly often on Erie). I don't mess around with the boat in the water.
Even as an experienced guy, a couple years ago I went for a hunt with a buddy who is a big boy (300 lb) and he brought a lot of gear. Pushing the limits of the boat. We didn't realize how rough the water was in the open (early morning hunt, still dark). Couldn't get the boat on plane safely in the dark in the rough water and we didn't notice the boat taking on water as it was splashing up in to the boat behind us. Both of us have hunted out of boats for a long time. It can happen to anyone.
Good idea to have a webbing ladder attached to the boat that you can reach if you are in the water.
WEAR A WADER BELT. The purpose is to prevent or slow down the water from filling the waders and drowning you. It needs to be snug to work.

I got my first duck boat just recently and after a few times of taking her out and scouting I told everyone I hunt with its not going back out until I install a killswitch I've noticed how easy it is to want to throw you out... 35hp surface drive and if you cut it to hard or let off while turning the wake will try and knock you right off

I lost a great hunting mentor to a capsized Jon boat. He talked about the hunt for weeks prior in excitement. 2/3 guys in the group did not survive. I’m very cautious on big water/rivers. Stay safe out there this season.

Similar situation happened to a buddy and I in a flat bottom Jon boat in January in Ohio. We were on a big lake and our boat nose dived in rough water and was under water in seconds. Both had waders on and was in the 36 degree water for 30 minutes and had to be dragged a half mile to shore because they couldn’t get us in to the boat that rescued us. When they got us to shore we were almost unconscious and could barely move. Luckily we knew some fellow hunters out there that saved our lives. I definitely agree always error on the side of caution and wear a life jacket!

This is a very worthwhile story. Briefly, my cousin, deceased from natural causes, and several buddies experienced a life threatening event on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in the early 60's duck hunting. A series of weather events stranded them in a remote blind with the boat they started in unable to get them out of the blind. Eventually, the Coast Guard was able to rescue them, take them ashore and to a hospital. My cousin never duck hunted again. Your friend is lucky. So, others please take Bobby's friend's story seriously.

All we hunt out of in Minnesota are boats and kayaks. We basically only water hunt here. We don't have the big fields like the Dakotas do all we have are large deep cold lakes, deep swamps and marshes oh and don't forget the mighty Mississippi river. I wish we had field hunts here.

When you said he got spit out wearing waders I perked up. No mention on shedding them. I lived in Alaska for a long time and fishermen and hunters quite often drowned crossing rivers and streams, losing their footing, and their waders filled with water. So, I guess he had on a wader belt.

We almost got in a bad situation in some 14 foot jon boats on some bigger water in high winds on the VA coast last year. Thankfully we made it baxk okay but the next week a group of guys our age launched from the same ramp and ended up flipping the boat and all went missing, they just found one of the bodies here recently month’s later

Had a similar brush not as bad but coulda ended badly forsure . Ontario canada last year december 19th,2021. First time hunting a new spot, 2 km ( 1.25Mile) walk in but its wadeable.. somewhat I learned, theres 2 points other one you can wade out 125+ yards. This one depends on angle you walk I learned. its a bit of a snow storm not too bad, few inches fell. 10 minutes left of legal light, had a goldeneye come in range , as I was about to clean up decoys early as the storm worsened and the water was picking up and covering us and our gear on shore. made the shot. Watched it drop its still legal light but fairly dark and hen goldeneye is what i ended up with , hard to see against surface I walk towards what I think is the duck and realize it was a rock sticking out of the shoal, my buddy yelled duck was to my left, same distance out but moving so go quickly to get it , get within 10 yards of the duck step on a larger rock, go to go down it I didnt know that was the drop off. I went under in waders now fully soaked and the waves had some strength pushed me right out into the duck, I grabbed it in the moment since I'm there and was expecting a shoal to walk on, now trying to swim with one arm against current not going to happen, half a second thought of I;m not going to make it back waves too strong, I cant yell out i tried cold water took air out from me, Stuff duck in my waders and now swimming and making a big splashing motion, which my buddy then see's me and runs to my aid I'm able to get out theres a drop off , he felt his way to it and waited as I swam with all my might and just barley was able to grab onto him I got back to shore stripped off everything, He had given me a spare shirt he had to cover up a little bit, and I made the 2km (1.25mile) walk back to car in a snow storm freezing and disoriented, i went ahead of him with his car keys while he got gear and I walked down the wrong trail back, thankfull he saw my headlamp and was able to yell out to me and I realized what happened and I didnt get too far off a main trail. Was very cold but made it back. but quick reminder things can go south really quickly especially if you are not familar with the area just going off what I was told its wadeablee for 125 yards! but then learning only one side is in reality. Extra cautious now !
