@No Reason At All of course the cost is different by region... Taxes have a HUGE impact on cost. The contractor isn't going to take that hit. The custom will be taking that tax hit. So every time you complain how expensive something is just look at the state you live in and which political group it predominantly affiliates itself with.

I have a half million dollars in heavy equipment in my yard, so I know a little about the process and the game
I used to be a paving contractor. I’ve only seen this done once by a homeowner and a bunch of friends. In the end, you saved a bundle and you have a functional driveway. If I had met you a couple days before hand there are a couple of things I would have recommended using what you had. #1) Use a long 2x6 as a screed, just like with concrete. #2) Make sure your water spray system on the roller is working and keep the drum wet. #3) With a roller that small, never do more than a 3” lift at a time. 4” you won’t get proper compaction without a larger roller. Breakdown rolling-immediately while hot with vibratory. Finish rolling-as the pavement cools and sets but still very warm, multiple passes over and over getting the pavement as smooth as possible and rolling out the roller marks. You’ll get many many years of use out of that driveway. I see this is about a year old. It’s time for sealcoating the asphalt with an asphalt emulsion seal coat. Repeat that every 3-5 years, not more. Let the seal wear down some. The sealcoat protects the flexible asphalt pavement from oxidation which makes the asphalt brittle. When it turns gray, it’s oxidized.
My driveway is about 20 yrs old. It's still in decent shape though. Getting cracks, ants in it...little divots. I was thinking of sealing it this year or next? What can I do to eliminate the cracking/ants and fill the little depressions (not many) ...?? Suggestions? TY!

I’m a 3rd generation asphalt installation specialist and I’ve done it by hand dumping it in piles and I’ve paved roads with a highway paving machine but I’ve never seen a family and neighbors pave their own driveway and make it look that good I mean it’s amazing!! As I look at the finished driveway, I had a proud vision of this father’s children bringing current and future friends (future partners, children as well) over to the home and saying “.... and this is the driveway we all put in ourselves one really hot and fun, long summer weekend!” This is the best DIY project I’ve seen in a while👍🏼

10 year asphalt guy. I have decided to avoid any negative comments, and instead I have some suggestions for anyone wanting to do this them selves: 1. if you dont have a paver, youll have a hard time seeing grade before rolling. I would suggest using an idea that people use in concrete, and setting grade stakes every 10 feet or so, so you have something to shoot off of. Additionally, it common place to use a long level to check grade/drainage as you go. done need to do it every few feet but it doesnt hurt to check every so often. 2. you can see where, part way through paving, they rolled all the way over the edge of the asphalt, then started luting again. This is not recommended. keep your roller/wacker back a few feet from your working edge and you wont have a seam as you see in the video. 3. on single pass driveways, we dont crown them in the center, but insead pitch the whole driveway to one side. it doesnt have to be a dramatic pitch, 1 or 2% is fine. 4. as you rake/lute your asphalt, youll often see your bigger aggregates working to the top. you will want to pull these all to a pile and flick them off so you keep the fines on the surface, basically using the fines to "seal" the top of your driveway. 5. the rolling sequence is to; Static roll (no vibrators on) the first pass, let cool for a bit (10-15mins) Vibe it (if your roller doesnt have vibes, then use a plate) going one direction, let cool a bit more, Vibe the opposite direction. Finish roll, static to remove roller seams, going length ways if possible. 5-b - USE A TON OF WATER. Your roller and your wacker should both ahve water tanks. use them liberally to avoid asphalt sticking to the plates your youll have a bad time lol. 6. keep a putty knife handy. As a raker, I always have one in my pocket and every few minutes use it to clean my shovel or rake as I go. it keeps it light, and easy to use. 7. use your rake or a hand tamp to tamp the edge of the driveway as you go. this will give you a long lasting edge that helps avoid crumbling, 8. Remember that all contractors are not bad. we arent here to screw you over, and asphalt and asphalt paving equipment is expensive (think $250-$500,000) 9. For those of you asking, i pay about $90/ton for asphalt. To calculate your asphalt tonnage needed, the math is Length (ft) X Width (Ft) X Depth (In) X 2 / 160. Example: 12' X 40' driveway, 3" thick = 1440. 1440 X 2 = 2880 2880 / 160 = 18 tons.
(LxW in ft) x (1/9) x (inches being laidx110) / 2000 12x40 x (1/9) x (3x110) / 2000 = 9 Tons That is the correct formula to use. I’m a manager for a paving company and that is what I use to determine how many tons go on a job. You have to remember that asphalt compacts 0.5 inch per inch laid. The 1/9 is used for the conversation to sq yards The 110 is used because asphalt weighs 110 pounds per inch per sq yard
I work in a construction company where we do paving and concrete and i have never seen anyone ask on how to do something like this themselves. The pavement obviously wasn’t perfect but much respect for going out and doing it yourself because i’ve worked for almost 2years doing paving and i do 3-6 driveways a day and it is not easy. So much respect.

Just in case you haven't heard enough: You guys did a really good job! I was in the business for 40 years, and it's been a LONG time since we paved by hand; but my Dad was old school and that's how we started. You refer to "the tri-axle"; I assume he made more than 1 trip because you can't get anywhere near 35 tons on a tri-axle unless severely overloaded. In PA, the average tri-axle can legally haul an average of 23 ton per load. It's hard to tell how many square feet you have, but from the looks of it, 35 ton wouldn't be near 4" thick; my guess would be closer to 2" thick. At 2" you would get about 2800 square feet; 1400 square feet at 4". You did save a lot of money; but keep in mind that a paving company is paying for the labor, so he wasn't going to make $4000 on the job. Also keep in mind that he will have $250,000 or so in equipment on the job (not including the truck); plus outrageous worker's comp/liability insurance. Again, nice job, and for sure you know what a hard day's labor is all about!

You will probably be able to catch a whiff from time to time on the really hot days this summer; then that would be the end. If you ever put driveway sealer on it--that crap STINKS to high heavens and for a few weeks--and the guy next door will smell it too! I hope this helps.

I also have looked on youtube for DIY paving driveways and was surprised how I didn't find any. Searched about a year later and found this lol. Considering more people will try to DIY concrete which I think is less forgiving, kudos to you and your family on a job tackled successfully. Seeing kids, especially that age chipping in is the icing on the cake. Shows good upbringing which is too rare nowadays!

Second quote was $18 thousand...My neighbor was getting their driveway done so I scheduled a third quote, It was $11 thousand. I asked how much if I pay in cash??? They talked and said $8000.00. I went to the bank got out cash and paid them when they were done. They put down 2" TO 4" thick and they did a fantastic job! They came back 2 times so far to real asphalt seal coat the finished driveway for $700.00 per coat. My only regret was not getting it heated for ice and snow removal. Their equipment was next door so I did not have to pay for equipment transport. They were able to book 15 other driveways while doing my driveway. They had a great year. Still holding up fantastic.
Great job. I watched a small paving contractor do two driveways by hand. They backed the truck up and dumped the asphalt raked it and screeded it with aluminum screeds. They had forms set just like pouring concrete. After rolling it you couldn’t tell it wasn’t done with a paving machine. Anyway great job!

Under no circumstances would I recommend this as a DIY project. That being said--you guys absolutely killed it! I could see a lot of guys getting 25% through it and tapping out and still spending the $8k for a crew to finish the job.
Thats definitely something i needed... i was conaidering doing it myself with some help from friends, but i dont wanna risk taking on a job i cant complete and end up spending money on top of the time and effort i already would have put in, i dont have a whole lot of time on my hands so ill probably just hire professionals

I wish success to you. Overall I dont think he done a bad job. But when anyone is making an investment into their home you should definitely consider the pros and cons of using a professional. If $$ is the issue I can see diy but if doing a diy project that isn't up to professional standards worth losing out on value that could be added to the property. I mean I can go to lowes and buy quickrete in a bag and make a side walk. But it isn't gonna be a job that would add value to my home. As if I would have hired a master craftsman to do it. There are pros and cons to everything. I guess its up to us as individuals to make the judgment call if its worth it or not.

For your information I paved my own driveway a little over 10 years ago for under $3,000 and it is still holding up till this day. Homeowners can do it themselves they don't need to hire a fly-by-night contractor. Most of the paving and sealcoating contractors in my area are incompetent and they will do anything to rip off the customers.

I drive tri-axle and have done a lot of paving from driveways to turnpikes. Not Bad !!! Ass kicking work. NICE! It's not the surface you get from a paver but neither is a 5 year old drive. Great work!

Why didnt you at least show the truck, tractor and spreading the asphalt being laid out. All you showed was a little bit of nothing other than explaining how to level an area for asphalt.
I was able to get somebody to do my driveway for about what you DIYed it for. I think your job is competitive if not better. Thanks for showing this could be done DIY (though honestly, I wouldn’t have attempted it, wouldn’t have thought to do it 😂😂😂).
Great Job Sir! Everyone is entitled to make money but some of these contractors are out of hand with quotes. Shame most of them don't even show up. Came out really nice and better then some of the "Pros".
Get this one....I have access to millings from a huge pile locally. There was a large area where they had threw out non-used asphalt (assumed it was from a highway contract 2 years prior). Anyway they allowed me to take that at my leisure. As anyone can expect these piles were hardened over the two years sitting there. I have had 4 truck loads going out to the site, breaking up the stuff with a steel post, loading the chunks into the truck, taking them home, and then busting these into 1 to 2 inch pieces. It's been hard work to say the least but I know have 3 inch base, been driving on it alot. It's bonding great leaving the surface not the smoothest. I'm getting some more breaking it up then finally rolling it. My son works at an equipment rental place. It's coming along better than expected and the only cost has been gas in my truck and a ton of sweat!!! (Driveway is the size of 9 vehicles parked)
That is a big job for a diy! I think the price quoted by a paving contractor was pretty decent. My driveway is not as large or curvy as yours and I’m pretty sure my quotes would come close to what you were quoted. I don’t think i would tackle this project so 👍 to you and your kids‼️. And I don’t have a tractor nor would I want to buy a roller. Cheers🍻
I have never done ANY asphalt work, but did a LITTLE concrete work as a younger man. From what I learned from those I worked with you will be MUCH happier with the 4" rather than 2". It will last far longer than 2" would have. Nice job

I did a driveway myself but it is only 40 feet long. Spread it with the Bobcat and hand raked, than used the vibrating compactor. Over 20 years later it is still in great shape! Your job may outlast those done by professionals!

As a kid I remember helping my folks do our driveway. My dad was cheap. Saved up ashpalt. Bits and pieces here and there. He had his own dumptruck. Anyways he made a furnace. Oil tank from a house. And a burner. Used to throw the chunks in and shovel the hot ashpalt into wheelbarrows. Back in 1993
Holy moly...I am highly impressed! I've poured/placed a LOT of pc concrete over the last thirty years and did a little asphalt concrete work before that and I would have NEVER even thought of attempting what you have done. I believe you mentioned you had planned on building a 2" thick mat but ended up with 4"...you might have regretted having only 2" not far down the road even with a good base of millings. If you stay on top of it with maintainance I bet it will last multiple decades. Again, GREAT job! Did they dump the asphalt in one pile or did the truck have a rat hole chute to fill wheelbarrows/tractor bucket? I'm gonna guess rat hole because I couldn't imagine keeping 35 tons of asphalt hot enough to remain workable over the time it must have taken to get it all placed.

@@lowellirish I would clean it very well. Then get the best sealer, "not water based," and seal it yourself.

I’m a 3rd generation asphalt installation specialist and I’ve done it by hand dumping it in piles and I’ve paved roads with a highway paving machine but I’ve never seen a family and neighbors pave their own driveway and make it look that good I mean it’s amazing!! As I look at the finished driveway, I had a proud vision of this father’s children bringing current and future friends (future partners, children as well) over to the home and saying “.... and this is the driveway we all put in ourselves one really hot and fun, long summer weekend!” This is the best DIY project I’ve seen in a while👍🏼

Speak for your own kids! Mine are amazing independent people. And the same goes for all their cousins and friends. I teach teenagers and I am always impressed by them. They are always willing to help and not afraid of hard work. Someone with this point of view is either too bitter or has never worked with teens.
10 year asphalt guy. I have decided to avoid any negative comments, and instead I have some suggestions for anyone wanting to do this them selves:
1. if you dont have a paver, youll have a hard time seeing grade before rolling. I would suggest using an idea that people use in concrete, and setting grade stakes every 10 feet or so, so you have something to shoot off of. Additionally, it common place to use a long level to check grade/drainage as you go. done need to do it every few feet but it doesnt hurt to check every so often.
2. you can see where, part way through paving, they rolled all the way over the edge of the asphalt, then started luting again. This is not recommended. keep your roller/wacker back a few feet from your working edge and you wont have a seam as you see in the video.
3. on single pass driveways, we dont crown them in the center, but insead pitch the whole driveway to one side. it doesnt have to be a dramatic pitch, 1 or 2% is fine.
4. as you rake/lute your asphalt, youll often see your bigger aggregates working to the top. you will want to pull these all to a pile and flick them off so you keep the fines on the surface, basically using the fines to "seal" the top of your driveway.
5. the rolling sequence is to;
Static roll (no vibrators on) the first pass, let cool for a bit (10-15mins)
Vibe it (if your roller doesnt have vibes, then use a plate) going one direction, let cool a bit more,
Vibe the opposite direction.
Finish roll, static to remove roller seams, going length ways if possible.
5-b - USE A TON OF WATER. Your roller and your wacker should both ahve water tanks. use them liberally to avoid asphalt sticking to the plates your youll have a bad time lol.
6. keep a putty knife handy. As a raker, I always have one in my pocket and every few minutes use it to clean my shovel or rake as I go. it keeps it light, and easy to use.
7. use your rake or a hand tamp to tamp the edge of the driveway as you go. this will give you a long lasting edge that helps avoid crumbling,
8. Remember that all contractors are not bad. we arent here to screw you over, and asphalt and asphalt paving equipment is expensive (think $250-$500,000)
9. For those of you asking, i pay about $90/ton for asphalt. To calculate your asphalt tonnage needed, the math is Length (ft) X Width (Ft) X Depth (In) X 2 / 160.
Example:
12' X 40' driveway, 3" thick = 1440.
1440 X 2 = 2880
2880 / 160 = 18 tons.

That is the correct formula to use. I’m a manager for a paving company and that is what I use to determine how many tons go on a job. You have to remember that asphalt compacts 0.5 inch per inch laid.
The 1/9 is used for the conversation to sq yards
The 110 is used because asphalt weighs 110 pounds per inch per sq yard
12'x40' = 480 sq ft x .25 for 3" depth = 120 ÷ 27 for cy = 4.444 cy
X 2 = 8.8888 tons.

I work in a construction company where we do paving and concrete and i have never seen anyone ask on how to do something like this themselves. The pavement obviously wasn’t perfect but much respect for going out and doing it yourself because i’ve worked for almost 2years doing paving and i do 3-6 driveways a day and it is not easy. So much respect.

Just in case you haven't heard enough:
You guys did a really good job! I was in the business for 40 years, and it's been a LONG time since we paved by hand; but my Dad was old school and that's how we started.
You refer to "the tri-axle"; I assume he made more than 1 trip because you can't get anywhere near 35 tons on a tri-axle unless severely overloaded. In PA, the average tri-axle can legally haul an average of 23 ton per load. It's hard to tell how many square feet you have, but from the looks of it, 35 ton wouldn't be near 4" thick; my guess would be closer to 2" thick. At 2" you would get about 2800 square feet; 1400 square feet at 4".
You did save a lot of money; but keep in mind that a paving company is paying for the labor, so he wasn't going to make $4000 on the job. Also keep in mind that he will have $250,000 or so in equipment on the job (not including the truck); plus outrageous worker's comp/liability insurance.
Again, nice job, and for sure you know what a hard day's labor is all about!

You will probably be able to catch a whiff from time to time on the really hot days this summer; then that would be the end. If you ever put driveway sealer on it--that crap STINKS to high heavens and for a few weeks--and the guy next door will smell it too! I hope this helps.

I also have looked on youtube for DIY paving driveways and was surprised how I didn't find any. Searched about a year later and found this lol. Considering more people will try to DIY concrete which I think is less forgiving, kudos to you and your family on a job tackled successfully. Seeing kids, especially that age chipping in is the icing on the cake. Shows good upbringing which is too rare nowadays!

Great Video! Thank you for sharing. 4 years ago My first quote was $27 thousand... Second quote was $18 thousand...My neighbor was getting their driveway done so I scheduled a third quote, It was $11 thousand. I asked how much if I pay in cash??? They talked and said $8000.00. I went to the bank got out cash and paid them when they were done. They put down 2" TO 4" thick and they did a fantastic job! They came back 2 times so far to real asphalt seal coat the finished driveway for $700.00 per coat. My only regret was not getting it heated for ice and snow removal. Their equipment was next door so I did not have to pay for equipment transport. They were able to book 15 other driveways while doing my driveway. They had a great year. Still holding up fantastic.
Great job. I watched a small paving contractor do two driveways by hand. They backed the truck up and dumped the asphalt raked it and screeded it with aluminum screeds. They had forms set just like pouring concrete. After rolling it you couldn’t tell it wasn’t done with a paving machine. Anyway great job!

Under no circumstances would I recommend this as a DIY project. That being said--you guys absolutely killed it! I could see a lot of guys getting 25% through it and tapping out and still spending the $8k for a crew to finish the job.
Thats definitely something i needed... i was conaidering doing it myself with some help from friends, but i dont wanna risk taking on a job i cant complete and end up spending money on top of the time and effort i already would have put in, i dont have a whole lot of time on my hands so ill probably just hire professionals

I wish success to you. Overall I dont think he done a bad job. But when anyone is making an investment into their home you should definitely consider the pros and cons of using a professional. If $$ is the issue I can see diy but if doing a diy project that isn't up to professional standards worth losing out on value that could be added to the property. I mean I can go to lowes and buy quickrete in a bag and make a side walk. But it isn't gonna be a job that would add value to my home. As if I would have hired a master craftsman to do it. There are pros and cons to everything. I guess its up to us as individuals to make the judgment call if its worth it or not.
It would be nice to include your cost compared to a hired company since DIY is usually done to eliminate costs/get a better focused job.

For your information I paved my own driveway a little over 10 years ago for under $3,000 and it is still holding up till this day. Homeowners can do it themselves they don't need to hire a fly-by-night contractor. Most of the paving and sealcoating contractors in my area are incompetent and they will do anything to rip off the customers.

I drive tri-axle and have done a lot of paving from driveways to turnpikes. Not Bad !!! Ass kicking work. NICE! It's not the surface you get from a paver but neither is a 5 year old drive. Great work!

This is not an average do it yourself job. This guy has an army of kids and large equipment. The only thing that looks like "do it yourself about this job" is the final result.
Why didnt you at least show the truck, tractor and spreading the asphalt being laid out. All you showed was a little bit of nothing other than explaining how to level an area for asphalt.
I was able to get somebody to do my driveway for about what you DIYed it for. I think your job is competitive if not better. Thanks for showing this could be done DIY (though honestly, I wouldn’t have attempted it, wouldn’t have thought to do it 😂😂😂).

Great Job Sir! Everyone is entitled to make money but some of these contractors are out of hand with quotes. Shame most of them don't even show up. Came out really nice and better then some of the "Pros".
Get this one....I have access to millings from a huge pile locally. There was a large area where they had threw out non-used asphalt (assumed it was from a highway contract 2 years prior). Anyway they allowed me to take that at my leisure. As anyone can expect these piles were hardened over the two years sitting there. I have had 4 truck loads going out to the site, breaking up the stuff with a steel post, loading the chunks into the truck, taking them home, and then busting these into 1 to 2 inch pieces. It's been hard work to say the least but I know have 3 inch base, been driving on it alot. It's bonding great leaving the surface not the smoothest. I'm getting some more breaking it up then finally rolling it. My son works at an equipment rental place. It's coming along better than expected and the only cost has been gas in my truck and a ton of sweat!!! (Driveway is the size of 9 vehicles parked)
That is a big job for a diy! I think the price quoted by a paving contractor was pretty decent. My driveway is not as large or curvy as yours and I’m pretty sure my quotes would come close to what you were quoted. I don’t think i would tackle this project so 👍 to you and your kids‼️. And I don’t have a tractor nor would I want to buy a roller. Cheers🍻
I have never done ANY asphalt work, but did a LITTLE concrete work as a younger man. From what I learned from those I worked with you will be MUCH happier with the 4" rather than 2". It will last far longer than 2" would have. Nice job

I did a driveway myself but it is only 40 feet long. Spread it with the Bobcat and hand raked, than used the vibrating compactor. Over 20 years later it is still in great shape! Your job may outlast those done by professionals!

As a kid I remember helping my folks do our driveway. My dad was cheap. Saved up ashpalt. Bits and pieces here and there. He had his own dumptruck. Anyways he made a furnace. Oil tank from a house. And a burner. Used to throw the chunks in and shovel the hot ashpalt into wheelbarrows. Back in 1993

I've poured/placed a LOT of pc concrete over the last thirty years and did a little asphalt concrete work before that and I would have NEVER even thought of attempting what you have done.
I believe you mentioned you had planned on building a 2" thick mat but ended up with 4"...you might have regretted having only 2" not far down the road even with a good base of millings.
If you stay on top of it with maintainance I bet it will last multiple decades.

Did they dump the asphalt in one pile or did the truck have a rat hole chute to fill wheelbarrows/tractor bucket? I'm gonna guess rat hole because I couldn't imagine keeping 35 tons of asphalt hot enough to remain workable over the time it must have taken to get it all placed.
