I saw Led Zeppelin twice in the 70s, the best one being at the Forum in LA, 1975. There was not an opening act. The group just came on and started playing, and playing and playing and playing. This lasted for over 3 hours, and there were 3 encores. I was able to get up front for the last one and they were still rockin' it playing "Black Dog". It may have been the best rock show I ever saw, truly. And it's makes me smile to see a new generation of fans on CZcams digging the group as much as I have all these years.

Jones and Bonham were a unit. I’ve read that one of the things which was different about Zeppelin was that Bonzo followed Jimmy’s lead guitar, and that was why Jimmy could improvise so extensively.......Bonzo always had his back. JPJ always kept his eyes on Bonzo.......and stuck with him like glue to provide the rhythm unit of the band as it were. True story: at an official press conference for the release of the movie Celebration Day.....the movie of the O2 concert in 2007, during which Jason Bonham seemed to channel his dad, he was asked about his feelings during the performance ......playing with his dad’s old mates. One of the things he said was that one time he looked over at JPJ and he was giving him “the look”, and he was like, OMG JPJ is giving me “the look”! The same look he gave to his dad. JPJ piped up and said “that was the “where are we” look.” That kind of brought down the house. It was really great to watch the interactions and the affection between Jason and his dad’s band mates. So much history there.

Spot on, John Bonham would adapt to whatever Jimmy was doing, and JPJ would follow him, it take great musicians to be able to jam like that on stage and adapt so fluidly...

Obviously can't verify this but being a drummer, it appears that they were doing a call an answer and Bonham seems to miss a particular part so Jonsey looks over and says oops to Bonham. Jones tries to get him back in the pocket which he ultimately does. That part is priceless in my opinion. Side note, I bought a bootleg of Zeppelin 1973 live at cobo arena soundboard recording great sounding. They did dancing days as one of their encores, right before the they started Page and Jones were tuning to drop d absolutely awesome you just don't get that anymore

You can see why some people (overwhelmingly Americans of course) were convinced that this was “satanic” and thought the band were evil devil worshippers ........Jimmy did have a serious interest in the occult for a time, but occult does not equal evil, in my opinion. Don’t know if he still is. Robert got the title of Golden God of Rock, and Jimmy was the “dark prince” . And then along came Black Sabbath....Zeppelin seemed squeaky clean in comparison to them... 😉

  • @JU5TINPDX
    @JU5TINPDX Před 4 lety +3

Hey Emmanuel, thanks for getting this up! I should have warned you that this particular song seems to be very easy for the algorithms/bots to find(I’m guessing that the length makes it easier to find). I know making a long video like that takes time and work so I’m happy you had a plan B 👍🏻
    About this performance:
It’s cool that you appreciated that small moment between Bonzo and Jonesy, it’s a really beautiful connection they had. From what I can tell, at 6:48 in your video, Bonzo comes with his fill to early, he looks at JPJ and shakes his head, JPJ kind of shrugs like “Jimmy’s in his own universe, I’m trying to follow him too... but don’t worry, we got this” When bonzo repeats the same fill/transition JPJ nods with approval like, “yep, there it is”
I like the moment because it reminds you that these guys aren’t reading music off paper, yes, there is a set list, but within each song there are a million different roads to go down, a ton of transitions, and they haven’t mapped it all out beforehand. Page is absolutely 100% the leader, he is initiating almost everything. In most bands the drummer would tend to follow the bass player, but Bonzo follows jimmy a LOT. You can hear sometimes when Jimmy launches up to the stratosphere that bonham tries to stay with him, and it’s JPJ that is the grounded one who can reel bonzo back down closer to earth. The connection and chemistry these four had was easy to hear, but it’s cool to also SEE it. I totally get that the two guys at the front of the stage are mesmerizing, and hard to take your eyes off of, but they had multiple cameras...I wish there was more footage of the best rhythm section ever.
I have to admit it’s been a while since I listened to the entire song. Usually when I get to the middle part that was creeping you out I either skip ahead to where bonzo comes back in, or just skip to the next song. However the song has a bigger effect with all that darkness, it builds tension so that when the rest of the band comes back it hits like a ton of bricks. Pink Floyd was great doing that too, especially “echoes” and “dogs”, both have long space-out sections before concluding the original melody. It definitely makes it feel more like a dramatic work, like a guitar concerto with multiple movements, or a stage play with 5 acts. A journey more then a song.

They always improvised live, the song Robert sings before the cello bow is Dan Francisco (Be Sure to Wear [Some]Flowers In Your Hair) by Scott McKenzie. Jimmy got turned on to using a bow during his session days. A guy from the London Philharmonic Orchestra suggested it and it worked (that guy was David McCallum Sr., father of actor David McCallum Jr.) He used to play it when he was with The Yardbirds and continued with Zep. Jimmy's fantasy sequence of himself climbing up the side of the rocky hill was filmed on an October night during a full moon on his own property (at the time) situated on Loch Ness. It shows him as the aspirant, seeking wisdom where upon reaching the Hermit, he finds it is himself, meaning the wisdom is within. Several times The camera seems to focus on Jimmy's eyes. That was intentionally requested by Jimmy; to "look within", "window to the soul" type thing. The guys the cops threw out were selling bootleg merch. In some shots, John Paul Jones is wearing a wig because, like any movie, there are almost always re-shoots and by the time the re-shoots came along, JPJ had cut his hair so he had to wear a wig to approximate the look he had when filming started. This video is a journey in so many levels.

Jimmy Page and Jones were prolific session players from 1965-69. They played on records by the Kinks, Van Morrison, and the Who. I believe Page first was introduced to the Cello bow when he worked on the theme to the James Bond movie Goldfinger, his last session may have been Joe Cocker's with a little help from my friends in '69. Led Zeppelin's commitment to improvisation and experimentation in their live performance sets them apart from all other bands. And when you are freely improvising you have to be unafraid to make a fool of yourself. They do go over the crest of the wave in their experimentation, sometimes crashing terribly. That way they arrive at musical terrain that is unattainable by others. They have no fear musically. If you understand that, then you will respect and enjoy their live performance. I never got to see Led Zeppelin, but I did get to see a Jimmy Page solo concert and a Robert Plant solo concert in the early 90s. Jimmy Page live was a magical monster who was sweating so much and spitting, he became a slime monster - literally. It was like he was possessed. All the while playing as good as he ever had! It was an unbelievable experience. I brought binoculars. Then when I saw Robert Plant, his first entrance to the stage was like the second coming! The entire back stage was filled with a wall of extremely bright lights. When they first flashed on I could feel the heat of the lights 40 rows back! Then he walked up a staircase from back stage, appearing in the middle of the stage in front of the wall of blinding light - we could only see his silhouette at first, and then he was lit - he was a golden god on stage - with such a powerful presence radiating to the crowd! There's nothing today that even comes close to what these guys produced. They tapped into something. We're now in the new Dark Ages.

Itwas my introduction to them and nedless to say I've been a fan ever since. I highly recommend you find Jon Bonhams spotlight from this concert, Moby Dick. I guarantee you, you will not be disappointed and just as mesmerized 💜

I Loved your reaction to the Cello bow! Just think for a second, that Page, at this point of filming, had been playing that song live since 1967 while in the Yardbirds. Making that song 53 years old, as played by Jimmy Page.

Good job on the link. Many great reaction streams get shit canned because of copyright restrictions. I fully understand from the artists point of view on being compensated, but it’s almost counterintuitive. The best reaction videos are always about the love of the music. Which you sincerely do. As for the artists getting paid? Reactionaries who bring the truth will undoubtably lead to consumers jumping down the rabbit hole to see what else is in the oeuvre, and if you love the music you’ll pay for it. Keep bringing the truth my dude. Your love of the music shines through.

    Jimmy just unleashed in this!
26:30 thats mars bringer of war by gustav holst, its classical music in the middle of a rock jam haha.
If you watch it again pay attention to the 2 johns, the reason they spend alot of time looking at eachother is because theyre locking down a roxk solid groove at the same time as jamming. This gives jimmy and robert the platfom they NEEDED to go off into outer space!!
Also note that everytime they jam (which was constantly!) They always NAIL the transition back to whatever song theyre in. They were all PEFFECTLY in sync with each other and it shows that all 4 were absolutely stellar musicians in their own right!
Ps the outtro by bonham is NOT sped up, he was a fucking ANIMAL!

Great reactions. You should check out some of the early live stuff from Danmark Radio (filmed in a radio studio) and Earl's Court to see how good they were from the start and how they progressed. Even if it's a song you've already done, the performance will be different. Greatest band ever!

Look for “ in My Time of Dying” Earls Court 1975, also from same show “ Trampled Underfoot “. You also need to hear “ Achilles Last Stand “ studio version first than you can find a few live versions.

The cello bow segment of Dazed and Confused live, had a lot to do with Jimmy's involvement in Black Magic, and was intended to fry your brain. The decibel level at a Zep concert was deafening. There's always been an argument on who were the loudest bands of all time, especially between Deep Purple, The Who and Zeppelin, but it depended on how the decibels were recorded. There were different methods on how it was done, but back in the 70's Zeppelin was recorded live, at an ear shattering 130 decibels. I saw Zeppelin live in 77', and when they opened up with the The Song Remains the Same, you could physically feel the music as well as hear it. As a 13 year old, my ears rang for the next couple of days after the concert where I was actually concerned about it. They were the first band where the term 'heavy metal was used to describe a band, but are not considered 'heavy metal' in this day and age, which is a good thing, because Zeppelin were so diverse. A lot of bands from the 70's that were termed 'heavy metal' are not considered that anymore, but are termed as 'hard rock' or 'classic rock.' Zeppelin were also considered the first arena band, and one of the first bands to utilize pyro, fog machines, and laser displays live. Sinatra was to the 40's as Elvis was to the 50's, as the Beatles were to the 60's, as Zeppelin was to the 70's. Almost every tune Zeppelin recorded is a work of art. Zeppelin is simply the greatest rock act of all time. Their concerts just blew your mind and were intended to. Man, the 70's, those were the days my friend. So much great music and music innovation. It will never be duplicated. Times that are missed.

Another true story: some of the camera people that were hired to film this concert for the movie were so stoned that much of the footage was unusable. So much of it had to be performed again later, without an audience. Of course, they had to make sure they all wore the same outfits etc. in the interim, JPJ had cut his hair, so they had to get him a wig for the filming. How funny is that!

So as a long time drummer and a bit older, I can tell you what's going on with John and John and why they always are looking at each other. Simply, a good rhythm section has to communicate, even during a song. And it's especially important when trying to keep up with the ad lib way Jimmy Page has in going about these songs live. You'll here several spots where it takes the rhythm section a few beats or a measure or two to fall back in synch with whatever transition Page is doing at the time.
Now, go back to that shot with John and John towards the beginning during that nice, slow, melodic part and watch closely. You'll see both of them looking at each other, trying to coordinate and time their fills to spice up the guitar part, and build up the song again. You'll see them nodding and shaking their head at each other. There is one part in particular where Jones hits a note, that would likely be in synch with a cymbol crash by Bonham. But Bonham shakes his head "no". Either they missed that one, or disagreed on that fill. You'll see this a lot with these two. It's super hard work, and a lot of talent, to keep up with the improvisational nature of Zeppelin. Even half of Plants vocals are improvised it seems haha.

Amazing reaction as usual. But when they show other clips that aren’t the actual performance it’s where they’ve lost the footage and filled it in with that. But I hope anything 1968-1971 is coming cause now that you’ve seen what Jimmy can do you need to see how insane Plant is during those years I recommend How Many More Times as as always haha.

Tickets to this concert was like $8.50. Worth the price huh. Their manager, Peter Grant, would always insist on cash payment for the band to play. After the concert they put the money in the hotel safe and someone stole it. $200,000 gone. Never caught them.

The part where Page plays the guitar with both hands and no pick. Eddie Van Halen fans love to pretend that Eddie invented that style of playing like that. But here is evidence that Page was doing it at least 5 years before anyone heard of Eddie Van Halen. Now I am not putting Eddie down at all. Just saying he didn't invent it like his fans think he did. He even has said he saw Page doing it. And Page didn't invent it either because he has said he saw guitarists before him doing it as well. Eddie just gets the credit because it's his calling card and he probably does it more than any other.
The scene were the cops are sort of arresting the teenager. That was in the bowels of Madison Square Garden and I assume he was scalping tickets. Led Zeppelin and especially their manager Peter Grant were relentless about scalpers and bootleggers ripping Zeppelin off. You see it to this day when so many of their vids and songs get blocked on youtube. In another sequence their manager Grant was giving Madison Square Gardens management a bad tongue lashing because they had let people sell bootleg Zepp stuff at the concert and he accused them of getting kick backs from it. Grant was a big man and basically a Gangster that had no problem beating the crap out of someone if he was pissed off about something. Also, famously at this concert Zeppelin Hotel safe deposit box was robbed of $200,000. I don't think anyone was ever caught and their were rumors that grant was actually behind the theft.
