    House actively hallucinating while practicing medicine is really cool. I also love how the exposure is cranked up in these episodes.

      It also just goes to show how smart he is. I remember being on nitrous oxide for a dental procedure and barely being able to spell words like, “beautiful”, and “especially”.

      @@MaxwellsDemon9 in reality, i think the effect would be caused by high exposure, yes. but i think here they did it digitally, some bloom effect, otherwise things would be really bright. either that or they use some funky lens or something, which is not entirely clear. but it's more likely to be digital.

      Completely agree. I loved her character.
      I don't really remember crying much watching House, but i sure as hell remember crying on the Ep when Wilson had to switch off life support on her, probably the saddest scene of the entire series....

    I love the dreamy effect of this episode. Which I assume, is supposed to parallel House's deluded perception.

      I hated the lighting aspect originally, because I couldn’t see House clearly. It’s like reading a book and all of a sudden in one section of the book, the font is smaller and italicized and you’re asking, “Why did the author choose this font, I can barely read the book?” It wasn’t until years later where I could get why the lighting was chosen for those scenes.

      The great thing is that after the Chase's bachelor party the colors immediately turn much darker. Probably signaling House's new fear of these hallucinations.

      Yeah but it requires a lot of self awareness and at the same time equal parts self confidence and self doubt. It's like you have to be aware of your own intelligence but also aware of the fact that you still know so little of what's out there.
      And that's why being able to weigh it in some kind of a healthy and reasonable manner even if nobody else understands is a great thing even if it does have some of its foibles.

      Thirteen is hands down my favourite of the supporting cast. She was always smart, interesting, badass and (even by "starting with Olivia Wild" standards) hot has hell

      I think that was the point, to show the positive side first but eventually, like addiction, it had to gradually go deeper and deeper until House couldn't handle it anymore.

    One great detail in this episode is how the bloom effect was cranked up, mimicking how your eyes perceive light when you haven't gone to sleep in a long time, just like what House is doing.

    Having House hallucinate Amber is not just a sign of his guilt, but how the Vicodin in affecting his brain. Also, after what House did in the two part of the season 4 finale Wilson's Heart it's no wonder it finally hits him

    You can note how bad Amber is for House even here. House usually knows why he thinks something and what follows from there. With Amber, he's basically avoiding thinking things through, letting his unconscious mind do the nob without consciously analyzing it.

      BTW I recently watched "dead poets society" actor who plays Wilson was a child prodigy.

      I hated her at the start too, but got to really like her. Her little speech about having to choose between love and respect until she met Wilson was great.

    Amber cast a long shadow over the show & an even longer shadow over House himself.
    She's never made it as a team member or nor as a love interest for House himself. Hell, she was only in maybe 10 episodes of a 177 episode show.
    That's 5% of the show.
    But every moment after her death, every silence between House & Wilson, everytime House shouts about the unfairness of life & his constant pain, Amber's fate loomed over the dialogue.

    There's a series of 3 novellas by Brandon Sanderson called "Legion" which is pretty much the same concept. A man who "manifests" imaginary Persons when he needs to access information or skills.

    Its interesting that his “right brain” , AKA Amber/hallucination says “It was just a glimmer, I couldn’t put it into words.” Bc the right brain isn’t the language half (although there is tons of documentation that the right and left hemispheres are not nearly as separate as previously believed).
    Bc I am a Very right brained person, and I was in a therapy session and the therapist kept pushing me to “say how you’re feeling in a different way” and I immediately became very defensive and shut down. The right brain can ‘speak’, but not in ways most people easily understand.

    The first diagnosis of the kid was exploding head syndrome and they said it was imaginary sounds.. Nope! I have it and I have the sounds recorded using an expensive sensitive microphone.. I took them to my neurologist after my 1st appointment.. He was shocked and had me do a sleep study and they even said that I had explosion head syndrome.. I've had that mess every night for around 10 years now.. Crazy Mess

    it's odd, this character was great for 3-4 episodes and more and it would have been terrible, then she's back as wilson's wife???? wtf??? then she dies, think she's gone but wham she's back as a figment of house's imagination? wtf???
    the actress is probably related to someone important, otherwise it makes zero sense.

      While that could certainly be the case, it could also be a tool from the writer's end to show how messed up House ended up later. I'd say her death was a turning point to the show, because later on, another important character dies and House starts to really lose it. I think it's to show the beginning of House's downfall from being a genius right on the edge, to becoming a genius, who's now over the edge
