Help! Please! You (and others) say Monsteras LOVE growing in water but my cuttings always turn black and rot. Ive tried Spring, distilled, RO water and nothing helps. The trimmings always rot. What am I doing wrong?
@@AnnahSoulif you're taking a fresh cutting, you can try letting it sit out for several hours, overnight, or for a day, before putting it in water. Wait for the cut end to dry out beforehand. Also be sure you're using a sharp, clean utensil to cut your plants. If you're putting rooted plants in water, be sure you're cleaning off ALL the dirt before transferring to water.
@@trippin9899 yes my friend Ive done all this too. I may just stop propagating all together. I appreciate your advice. Wait.. I havent tried root starter yet.. have you? Do you think that might work?

I love baby Pablo! I wish I'd found you five years ago when all of this was so new to me and my home just seemed like a plant cemetery lol. You explain everything in layman's terms which is so helpful.
Crystal could you make a few videos on how to identify when soil needs to be amended and how to amend it? I for example can be buying soil too often and many of the times I don't even know if the soil I'm using is good or how to help it to be better. FYI, I do composting, so I think (it makes sense in my mind)I can amend the old soil with it, plus a little of new soil...
This was a helpful visual. 👍 So do you use the 2nd mix or the 3rd, and do you use the same mix for all species - ie Pothos, Calatheas, Philodendron etc?
Idk what Im doing lol. But I used orchid bark, pearlite, tropical mircale grow soil and african orchid mix with sandy soil in my soil for my calathea. It seema to be working 😂
I just made my own mix for the first time. I mixed 1 part peat moss + 1 part perlite + 2 parts orchid bark. I’ve been looking after my plants successfully for several years and I’ve only recently learned the indoor potting mix as is not best for plants without amendments. I’m slowly repotting all my plants in the new mix. Can’t wait to see them thrive. 😁
I have a bag of Miracle-Gro Orchid Potting Mix and a bag of Miracle-Gro Potting Mix. What ratio should I use when mixing them together? Your advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
If it's a plant that needs this very well draining mix (the third example) I would water it in the sink and soak it through and then put it back in it's spot when it's done draining in the sink. That way it gets soaked in the soil but it won't get rotted
It's a fine line. I just reported a few because I was watering plants every few days that I should only have to water once a week because my mix was too chunky. I was so worried about root rot that my mix was mostly perlite, bark, and charcoal lol
It depends on your environment. If you have a really dry indoor space then it can be beneficial for it to flow a little slower. But if you have problems with high humidity then it's crucial for it to drain quickly so you don't get mold. Since indoor spaces don't get good air circulation, it's a lot easier for houseplants to get mold than if they were outdoors in the same watering conditions, so it's generally better to err on the side of well draining media and watering often as opposed to slow draining medium that holds onto water, even in only moderately dry houses. But if planting in a garden, typically a more water retentive mix is goid
I was so mad when I bought a Cacti + Succulent mix from a well known brand and it was literally like a bog when I watered it 😭 stay adding those amendments!! Soil structure is everything 🌱

yes exactly! think of how the plant would be in the wild - when a big rain falls, the earth is so deep that it drains away and evaporates quickly. you want to emulate that by ✨drowning that ho✨, a well draining mix, and enough drainage holes in the pot. but if it's a swamp native plant like a pitcher plant, it needs to be sitting in moist, boggy soil most of the time. remembering where each plant is from originally helps me remember what it needs to thrive! also, yeah you only really need to change the soil if there's a problem (like mold, pests, or root rot) and when you re-pot! hope that helps 😊🌿

Yes! And if you can use rain water, it's even better! Reusing what flows through another plant is great because it has picked up some of the nutrients from the first plants soil too.
Have you tried sulfer powder? If not try that! Sprinkle in the soil and on the top of the soil and all over the plant, you can also make a watering solution with it and water the soil and then dust the soil with the powder.
it's usually smart to add extra perlite in most houseplant cases because I've found out the hard way that shop-bought "houseplant mix" is usually wayy too boggy and not well draining enough, like the first example! (I even bought a famous brand cacti mix that was sooo swampy 😭) but for something like a big Peace Lily that is more of a thirsty rainforest plant, it probably will be okay with that little extra moisture.
