I'm japanese and I often make the same mistake on the train. If you could talk to one of the train guys and explain your situation, you did not have to pay for that mistake, but like you said it's a small mistake that you might just want to move on without the hassle of explaining.

Just a minor correction. Mitsukoshi is a very upscale department store (it's not a "mall" in Japan, though it may be somewhat "adulterated" in other countries to fit the market) that is a part of the Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Group (Isetan is another department store brand within that consortium). The only real counterpart elsewhere in the world is Harrod's in London. Mitsukoshi continuous history was founded in the latter part of the 1600's by a kimono merchant in Tokyo. Whenever I visit Japan, it is my primary favorite store, followed by Takashimaya.
As for shorts, it is a bit too casual for some Japanese. But I was also told, especially in Kyoto, besides being somewhat inappropriate for religious Shrines and Temples, wearing shorts just increases the surface area for mosquito bites (I found this out the hard way this summer).

Mitsukoshi is actually not a mall, it’s a department store. The equivalent of Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s or Harrods. It’s just the Japanese ones are insanely huge.

Wearing shorts used to be inappropriate going to Ginza or ultra luxury malls. However, in the recent years Asian fashion has gone through phases of minimalism. As long as you are well groomed, you could even wear chick pajamas to Mitsukoshi with a pair of Adidas Stan Smith.
    ..
And by the way, getting on the wrong side of Metro/JR and such, you can ask any station attendant at the glass booth to weive your fee. I tried that few times, they're used to people getting on the wrong side or train daily.

When it was announced that Uniqlo was going to open a store in Ginza, there were many dissenting opinions that a chain store like Uniqlo for the common people was not suitable for Ginza, which caused a lot of problems. Uniqlo promised to create a store with a sense of luxury worthy of Ginza, and in the end they were able to open a store without incident.

Ginza is definitely a sushi restaurant.🍣There are many high-end sushi restaurants where you can enjoy different levels of deliciousness. The price will be at least $200 or more, but you'll be charged many times that for the same level of sushi in NYC.😂

Google maps does a decent job but it does not show many shops, restaurants, etc only the major ones. Tokyo and other Japanese cities are very vertical. Many businesses are underground, in basements and in multi-floor buildings. Because many overseas tourists cannot read japanese they mostly ignore retailers located in basements or on higher floors. Many interesting places are behind bland looking building facades.
Every time I visit Tokyo I find myself using other company train line the majority of the time. If you restrict yourself to JR you also restrict your self to central Tokyo. JR Rail pass I find is best used for Shinkansen when you plan to use it more than 2/3 times (depending on how far each trip is).

I have binged your entire Japan series (and soon will binge your new one!). These have been some great videos! Only thing I wish was in the videos was more of the interaction between people (staff, etc) though I know that is probably taken out more for respect of their privacy and conversation with a language barrier is always a little awkward. I just kind of wanted to see how a restaurant setting differs from the US, if at all. I'm graduating college soon and have been thinking about traveling to Japan right after I graduate as a little celebration before I settle into a career. Since I graduate in August I would also have some time to learn as much Japanese as I can before November/December which is when I would go. Only issue is I may have to do it solo and that is WAY out of my comfort zone 😬. Thanks for the great vlogs!
