  • Wilhelm Richard Wagner (22 May 1813 - 13 February 1883) was a German composer, theatre director, polemicist, and conductor who is chiefly known for his operas (or, as some of his later works were later known, "music dramas"). Unlike most opera composers, Wagner wrote both the libretto and the music for each of his stage works. Initially establishing his reputation as a composer of works in the romantic vein of Carl Maria von Weber and Giacomo Meyerbeer, Wagner revolutionised opera through his concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk ("total work of art"), by which he sought to synthesise the poetic, visual, musical and dramatic arts, with music subsidiary to drama. He described this vision in a series of essays published between 1849 and 1852. Wagner realised these ideas most fully in the first half of the four-opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung).
    His compositions, particularly those of his later period, are notable for their complex textures, rich harmonies and orchestration, and the elaborate use of leitmotifs-musical phrases associated with individual characters, places, ideas, or plot elements. His advances in musical language, such as extreme chromaticism and quickly shifting tonal centres, greatly influenced the development of classical music. His Tristan und Isolde is sometimes described as marking the start of modern music.
    Wagner had his own opera house built, the Bayreuth Festspielhaus, which embodied many novel design features. The Ring and Parsifal were premiered here and his most important stage works continue to be performed at the annual Bayreuth Festival, run by his descendants. His thoughts on the relative contributions of music and drama in opera were to change again, and he reintroduced some traditional forms into his last few stage works, including Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (The Mastersingers of Nuremberg).
    Until his final years, Wagner's life was characterised by political exile, turbulent love affairs, poverty and repeated flight from his creditors. His controversial writings on music, drama and politics have attracted extensive comment, notably, since the late 20th century, where they express antisemitic sentiments. The effect of his ideas can be traced in many of the arts throughout the 20th century; his influence spread beyond composition into conducting, philosophy, literature, the visual arts and theatre.

    One of the best things about classical music is that its meaning belongs to the listener alone. I am not German and have no interest in German culture, language or history, and frankly the literary meaning of Wagner's operas are of little concern to me. But the music is incredible! It fills me with awe, it calms me down, it takes my imagination to lands far beyond the scope of the present. In other words, one listens to classical music because of the craftsmanship itself. I've always had a penchant for the dark and the grandiose, which is why Wagner's works click with me more so than those of many other composers. It drives you to action, with the more relaxed compositions serving as a breathing room before the next epic can take place. It's a journey for the truly demanding mind and as a perfectionist myself, I relate to the themes that these operas are undoubtedly meant to invoke. Greetings from Poland.

    I don't know why people have to bring in politics when they discuss music, especially Wagner's music.I don't care a tinker's cuss if he liked or disliked Jews, Frenchmen or Hottentots. His operas were outstanding. I have never heard anything more stirring than The Ride of the Valkyries and anything more poignant than the Todeslied from Tristan und Isolde

      Well, Wagner was very political, and his music can often reflect those views. It also doesn't help that a certain notorious political leader adored Wagner's music which has left a bad connotation for some listeners. For instance, his music is still banned in Israel as far as I know. So, there is some relevance in discussing politics in relation to Wagner and his works.

      tell me, what exactly gives this music a spirit of war? just because it is bombastic? well, look at other composers who wrote similar pieces (like franz liszt's "Les preludes", and tell me, are they war-like (so, in your opinion, german) as well?? what you are doing is judging music due to the other character traits of a composer, which is both silly and unfair

    • @omgtkseth
      @omgtkseth Před 10 lety +1

      peter meier Well, it gave Woody Allen urges to invade Poland... Its pretty obvious here nobody cares about war and germans, but about Wagner's nationalism and antisemtism, which grew in Germany after Wagner's death. Beethoven wrote for an emperor but had a chance to take a step back when the emperor went berserk. Wagner didnt have that chance and was too xenophobic for people to give him the benefit of the doubt...

    That, that right there has consistently sent a chill down my spine since my earliest memories of listening to the Tannhauser saga with my grandfather. There is something both haunting and majestic about it - the choice between staying within a paradise unparalleled, or returning back to the grim realities of the world in which one's duties and obligations take center-stage; it is perhaps the most stringent point of the human experience - to indulge one's baser feelings, or to uphold one's self to a higher standard.
    Also, those french horns blaring invoke something primal within my spirit every time!

    La obra es magistral porque cada acorde va con una determinada armonía, de donde la música se va en lugar de quedarse, la oyes a lo más que puedas muy a lo lejos, esa es nota distintiva después de arriba a abajo, en diferentes instrumentos musicales, pero lo más destacado es la partitura en la base de su obra, usa cuando más una vibración que es la primera consistente en te despierta, te cura de una enfermedad te sacude como plumero empieza a quitar el dolor de cabeza, te quita el ollín de la comprensión.y ya con una conciencia, te obliga a taladrar los instrumentos en la mente de tal forma que es un trabajo que sólo se hace cuando se hace, la batuta es para dejar de corregir los errores, cada uno toca lo que toca gracias a tí (pronombre).
