- Polaroid recently unveiled their new black and white emulsion for the 600 film line up. I put it through its paces to see how it works in real life scenarios. It is giving great quality without the cost and risk of pack film.
0:00 Intro
0:29 crazy light conditions at a parade
2:00 no more expensive and risky FP film
2:37 look at this dynamic range!
4:59 best instant film for portraits
6:36 how does it do with studio lighting?
8:06 some BIG cons
11:39 120 and 35mm images from the parade - Věda a technologie
Wow thanks for highlighting this. This is light years away from where that emulsion was a few years ago, it used to be almost impossible to not blow out the sky. You nailed the photos of the parade, the fact that it got sky detail on the interior of that car is seriously impressive. Glad Polaroid keeps improving the chemistry!
Yea it truly is impressive!
Wow-that looks like a huge improvement over the previous version. Very helpful and great shots-thank you
Yea def a huge improvement
Polaroid 600 was the first camera I owned, and it's been gathering dust for over a decade now, so I'm stoked to try this. Thanks for reviewing it.
Cool!
Great video explaining and comparing the two. Thanks Ribsy!
I also love where you shot this. Your backdrop, framing and lighting pop super clean! Aesthetically pleasing, and informational!😀
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Dude the image at 2:45 is so bangin, so glad you’ve come to the side of the rebellion!!
Haha yes! Took me a while but I’m here. SPARTA!
Thanks for this review! I love instant film. And… a PR Parade! This Boricua loved this! ❤
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
what a great news Ribsy, thank you so much for this. I want a go in it with my "new" 680!
Enjoy!
Polaroid has been working on the new color film for several years now. I'm hoping the jump in quality is significant like with the B&W film. The current formula has been about the same since about 2018/2019 other than slight alterations with the chemistry. I do think Polaroid gets skin tones more accurately than Instax but man it is super contrasty
Yea it’s been slow going. Let’s see if they can match instax
the black and white shots from the parade where my favs such nice blacks and nice whites and great compositions ! killing it
Thank you! Those were my favorite too!
omg 1:09 is an incredible shot!! Amazing photos!!!
I really appreciate it 😊
I need this in SX-70!
Same! I’m considering buying and sx70
I can totally see your comparison between the new integral and peel-apart. It is certainly close in tone/contrast to FP-100b (having shot it myself), and it certainly looks a lot more stable. Great results you have there!
Indeed! Glad I wasn’t the only one
Damn all these cameras I want now.. Great dynamic range on those.
Haha there are some good things happening nowadays
Awesome video brother! Thank you for sharing your experience and results with the new emulsion, did I understand you correctly that none of the pictures used flash? How did you manage to illuminate the mechanic in the shop garage (my favorite picture btw). Keep shooting bro polaroid will pick you up in no time!
Thanks! No flash anywhere. For the mechanic he was lit by the entrance of the garage. The door was wide open so soft bounced light was coming in
This stuff is awesome so far. I bought a few packs and just took a shot on Sunday. Black and white Polaroid 600 with actual dynamic range? I have some of the 2011 Impossible stuff in my film fridge. I need to do some side by side comparisons.
That would be cool to see
Yeah the new b&w 600 film looks great. Fascinating info about the Instax Monochrome chemistry. Do you have any more info about that?
I don’t actually. But you can’t use lens filters for BW, like you can do with Polaroid BW
Nice retro shots. Had to order some B&W after seeing those. Sorry you didn't have an affiliate link yet...
Haha all good! I’m working on it 😃
Looks great, I need to look into a Polaroid camera
It’s worth it!
Really enjoyed this video!! Definitely subscribing and checking the rest.of your videos 😊🙏
Excellent shots. When using the I-2 where you in auto or manual? Flash or no?
Full manual no flash
I haven't sunk my teeth in the I-2 but I do have a OneStep Plus that I am considering to use with one of my Boxes of New Emersion
Not too bad. Have you or could you try the B&W in an older Polaroid camera? I have a Polaroid OneStep Express 600. Thanks.
My Polaroid Auto 100 will never forget pack film! 😥
I only own the I2 😅
Ha ha. You need to buy a old SX-70 and have it converted to 600 film and shoot the new emulsion B & W film.
Now that’s a new video episode for you
The photo looks so sharp, what camera did you use?
Which photos? Medium format is yashica 124g. BW is canon eos with 40mm pancake. Polaroids are I2
@@ribsy thank you, what I ask for is the Polaroid photos, they look so sharp
Way to go, Polaroid. Next step: A colour film that develops in less than 5 minutes.
ha i wish!
Thanks. This film may have improved, but it is still very inferior to prints from negative film. When I saw your print of the ladies in the car, my thought was: if only he had taken this with 120 film.
That goes without saying. Everything is inferior to print from negative
I wonder when it will be in the standard i type film.
Same!
I wonder if these improvements will one to sx70 packs…😅
I think that’s the plan
@@ribsy I hope so, my sx70 needs some love! 😸
I have been bothered by a question for quite some time. Can Polaroid black and white as well as color films, like Fujifilm films, preserve their colors for a long time without fading? I hope that the colors in my photos won't fade away, just like the memories they capture.
Rumor is that the Polaroid does brown a bit. I haven’t had them long enough to confirm for myself
How does this film respond to orange and red filters? Instax mono film turns muddy and low contrast with an orange filter. Curious whether this does or not.
I haven’t tested it. But the good news is that those filters should behave like they do with any BW film. This film is true BW!
We also need to take into account a lot of us aren’t shooting the highest of quality Polaroid cameras. RESULTS WILL VARY!
Definitely a fair point! The lens in front of the camera always matters just as much as the film
Modern Polaroid film shot with modern Polaroid camera. Interesting to see what images would like if shot with a vintage Polaroid 600 camera?
like a Polaroid 680?
Yea that’s interesting. I don’t own any older ones tho
I'd love to know what mode you were shooting in. If you can recall. Thanks
full manual! metered with y seconic
Maybe at last this new Polaroid has turned tne corner! Is there an SX70 version available?
This may be! Don’t think sx70 film has been updated yet
@@ribsy Well, I could always put an ND filter in front of the lens.
Off subject, but that t-shirt is 🔥
Ha thanks!
Now if I could use it with the Polaroid backs for my two MF cameras, this would be awesome.
That would be really cool. What is your setup?
@@ribsy I wish I had one - I've got a Bronica with a Polaroid film back, but it takes pack film 😭
Since Fujifilm is exiting the game of film, they should sell their formulas to Kodak or some other manufacturer. Imagine if Kodak had all of the Fuji chrome films, but changed the name?!
That would be sick!
How does it compare to Instax?
It have more dynamic range than instax BW. but instax BW is no slouch
To tell the truth, the new formula looks good, but it doesn't look like there is that much detail in shadows in these shots. I am also curious if this film turns to sepia like the previous generations.
My scans aren’t great (I used a cheap document scanner) I def recommend you look at the prints in person if you ever get a chance. That’s where you really experience the magic of the new emulsion
@@ribsy That makes sense, I might give this film a try in the future 😊
bushwick is the hood?
Depends on the block
But what about 4x5? that fuji 3000b is 4x5 or 3.3x4.25, so going by Polaroids prices even for 100$ is cheaper. Polaroids mono definitely not on the level of dynamic range as fuji's peel apart. That negative it produces is very high detail definitely miss shooting those packs used to cost only 20-30£.
when you factor-in the risk of getting overly expired 3000b, there is no way to justify the price. For me, it’s a no brainer - I’ll take the decent performance and reasonable price of Polaroid, vs very risky likely bad performance expensive expired FP film.
I get it though - fresh FP back in the day was truly amazing
@@ribsy To be fair even the fresh packs were hit and miss! i just hope they release a 4x5 version.
can't really compare it to peel-part and not mention that peel-apart gives you a negative as well as your instant print... that said, very exciting to see a new BW emulsion from Polaroid!
Yup
I know that basement
😂🤣
Comparing this to god tier packfilm is clickbait-y & laughable. Show us the inevitably faded & sepia’d in no time. Ages like milk. Absolute trash!
Definitely click bait. Thanks for clicking
