Putting more outboards next to each other actually decreases efficiency. Props are too close together and cannot move the volume of water they can when you have more space next to each prop. Guarantee you that boat would run same speed if not faster with 3 engines spaced out better compared to 4. More engines doesn’t necessarily mean more speed. You might have more HP but that doesn’t mean anything if that HP is not being used efficiently. I met a guy that had 5 merc 450rs and said he went back down to 4 and he had way more get up. He also went with 4 toroidal type props which also made a huge difference in acceleration and getting the boat up to plain. They were twin screw toroidal props on each outboard.
