Thank you for including the details of the af settings. Very helpful
Hope you get back to 100% soon, thanks so much for these incredible camera videos... I went all in on Fuji and your videos sold me on all the "fujicrons", very happy with them!
I love those little lenses.
Glad to have you back!
Many thanks Victor!
Thanks for this video. Hope you will have more xt5 related sports know how videos
Brian I’ll be shooting more sports this fall and winter. If I find out some new info I’ll post it.
I have been experimenting with the X-t5/70-300 with and without both the 1.4 optical and digital TC at the farm around the corner. They have chickens, horses, goats, sheep, friendly pigs that graze on grass and hundreds of fast moving and perching New Jersey bluebirds and barn swallows. Getting the settings correct and setting up the X-t5 to quickly change settings has been challenging. I will be shooting a rooster strutting around his ladies 5 feet away in bird mode when two of the mini-horses decide to battle in the field 100 feet away. Of course this needs a quick change to animal etc. Your video was very well done especially when you list the details so I can pause the video and take notes. I only recently started watching your channel and now will give it a deep dive. THIS VIDEO WAS VERY USEFUL TO ME. THANK YOU.
I know what you mean... it is retarded that the "button for subject detect just turns it on and off instead of giving us a drop down menu of what to focus" to go around it I recommend using the quick menu. Set one of the C as bird detect, with the settings associated, go with the faster tracking imo. Set the other as animal with the slower tracking. But they need to be next to each other like C3 and C4 etc. That way you can tap Q rotate the back dial to the other c setting half press shutter and you are on the other setting. To change back do the same but rotate the dial the other way.
Thanks Stephen! I’m glad it has helped you. The new firmware update should make animal and bird detection better although there is still no auto detection mode. Overall tracking should be better.
Good stuff, great info!
Thanks Bill! I’m really loving this X-T5.
Hope you get back to feeling 100% better Kirk! I find the vertical battery grips are very much a necessity for me, when shooting with my XT-3 camera bodies. Especially if shooting with the Fuji 100-400mm. Best wishes for you.😊🙏👍
Thanks Jeffrey, Yes me too with the X-T3. I find with the X-T5 the battery drops down to around 3/4 power in a normal game. So its fine with the X-T5.
Hi Kirk, great pictures. If you need more Performance, the Fujifilm X-H2S and the new Firmware update V3.00 ist the best combination for you. Especialaty including the handgrip with 2 Batteries
Hartmut - yes you would be right but I made a decision not to drop the money on the xh2s I don’t do enough sports to justify it. Only shooting 1-2 events a week in season is just not enough. If I was still a full time photojournalist not retired and shooting part time I would be still using Canon gear. That was my gear for 40 years.
Glad you’re feeling better. I shoot equine sports a lot, both English (e.g. dressage, show jumping, cross country jumping) and Western (pole bending, barrel racing, cattle penning etc.). This is my first year shooting with the XT5 and the 70-300 but so far I’ve been very pleased. SO much lighter than my Canon 1D MKIV with a 70-200 f2.8 rig so I can keep going longer. At 73 years old, I’m young at heart, but my shoulders might disagree. I switched to the XT3 a few years ago but I think the XT5 really has it beat!
Yes way better than the xt3! My Canon rig from years ago would kill me. I was able to work with my xt3 but the 5 is much better at AF. I shot lots of horse stuff for the paper many years ago. 3 day eventing was big where I am. Along with show jumping. Loved shooting cross country part of the 3 day.
Hi mate. I'm shooting Dressage for paid work later this year with the X-T4. Do you have any tips on the AF settings and the best lens for the job? I currently have the 70-300 and the Tamron 17-70, but I was wondering if I might need the 50-140.
Thanks 👍
@@nomadictimbo9185 the 70-300 should be fine. I usually shot around f/8 with a SS of 1/500 minimum, perhaps faster, and auto ISO to handle exposure.
@@ImagesbyCeciSnow thank you for such a quick response. I also assume the number 2 (ignore obstacles) is probably the best to go to in the custom AF settings right?
@@nomadictimbo9185 yes. I forgot to mention that.
I got my first look at an X-T5 this past weekend at a local camera store. The first thing I immediately noticed was how bright both the EVF and the LCD are compared to my X-T3. And, the EVF is much larger. Maybe down the road a bit the used market will be in a place that makes getting one more affordable. We'll see! Have a great week.
I love the camera. To me it’s the perfect photogs camera.
Great video. I have also had great luck with my XT-5 70-300 combo with tennis. Not sure what lens to try as I attempt indoor court sports. I have a Viltrox 75mm, considering the 50-140 but not sure.
The Viltrox and the 50-140 will be good for basketball and hockey. Well the Viltrox not so much for hockey.
Hi Kirk, Thanks for an interesting and informative video. As a Fuji XT5 user and hobby landscape photographer hearing about your camera settings was particularly helpful. Would it be possible to flesh this out a little by advising on your shutter speed/iso/aperture settings?
No problem - I shoot wide open at 1/1000 or higher. Whatever the ISO is to permit this is what I use.
I'd love to see a comparison between this camera and the XH2S, since that seems to be specifically designed for this sort of thing. I can see the higher megapixels of the XT5 images coming in real handy though if your lens can't reach QUITE enough.
I decided that I wanted the smaller, lighter camera in the X-T5. I was willing to sacrifice the battery grip and some of the AF speed that you get with the X-H2s. I have been able to get along with the X-T3 just fine so anything would be an improvement. It would be fun to do a comparison but I don’t have access to one.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography I agree. I've done sports with the X-T3, so the T5 would be a big upgrade. AND, I don't have to spend big bucks on memory cards.
I do a lot of street photography and found that when using the 90 F2, I get much better results and less hunting if I use the focus limiter!
Yes the 90 is a beautiful lens but too short for field sports
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography
Great for street though! 🖖😝
Thanks for the video. The only downside of the X-T5 can sometimes be overheating. I was shooting a soccer game on a warm day (26°C) and standing in the sun, using the Continous H 10fps & JEPG setting, and had to turn the camera off three times for a few minutes because of overheating. I only took about 150 photos. By the way i'm using AF-C customs setting 5, but not sure if it's the best for soccer.
The overheating should not be happening when shooting stills. I shoot in heat fairly often at 15 fps continuous H and never had that problem. For soccer I usually use AF-C 3
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography Maybe the X-T5 in silver color are hot-blooded? No seriously, i don't know what causes the overheating of my X-T5. I shoot in JEPG size L, maybe saving data generates more heat than in RAW? The shutter i have at most on Mechanical Shutter sometimes i use EF. The shutter speed i have set to a minimum of 1/1000 and as lens i use the 70-300mm always at open aperture. Overall my Canon R6 is much better at focusing (and doesn't overheat either). With the X-T5 i have a lot of somewhat blurry photos, but sometimes i love the film simulations, and with "Classic Negative" and weak grain effect the soccer photos look like from the early 90s. Thanks for the tip with AF-C setting 3. I'll compare it with AF-C setting 5.
I currently own an XH2s but stopped doing video work as often as I thought I would. I have always wondered if the XT5 would work to shoot my daughters soccer games or it would be too slow. Id love to bring an even smaller set up than the Xh2s if possible
I would bring an XT5 without hesitation
Hi Kirk, this is one of the videos I was looking for. I am trying to decide on one of the following: X-T5 and Sony A7iii. I am struggling to take a decision, and one of the things that is making me doubt is the AF. I am planning to use it - apart from typical usage like portraits street and landscape - for sports: football/soccer and indoor gymnastics. I can now get the a7iii + Sony 24-105 + Sony 70-300 for the same price of X-T5 + Fuji 16-80 + Fuji 70-300. What would be your recommendation? Thanks
Well this is quite a conundrum. Full frame vs apsc. With full frame you need longer lenses. For some of these sports you need fast glass for shooting inside and at night. Non of the lenses you mention are fast enough for indoor or night sports. The X-T5 is a newer camera than the a7iii.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography I know I am not comparing apples to apples 😬. And what about X-T5 and X-S20 being the kit price the same. Thanks
Hope you feel better soon! Sounds like the X-T5 is a great sports camera. Did you by any chance try tracking?
Hi Bob, Thanks! I tried it with tennis with eye/face tracking and it worked very well. This was without the firmware update. It must be better now.
I use XT5 very similar settings - I do find the 100-400 a bit soft wide open though ??
I only use it wide open and it’s tack sharp.
Would this camera and lens combo do well for moving wildlife shooting? I suppose it does somewhat depend on how far out the wildlife are.
I’m sure it would work. You just need to pick your focal length before you focus.
I am a new Xt5 owner and I have been melting my brain trying to learn afap. I'm trying to create a space to help people with ADHD using tennis/pb and photography for focus hobbies. Are there any tips you can give me relating to 18-55 lens until I can pull trigger on a better lens? I am aware of all features including modes. my 300 test point and shoot photos came back perfect for everything not moving. Any tips for the 18-55 you can give me will be greatly appreciated!
Should I even be able to get tennis shots in focus with the 18-55?
You should have no trouble with keeping them in focus. Continuous AF use AF #5 pre set and single point focus. And use continuous high speed shutter.
Do you also experience the camera having freeze frame or blackout whenever doing CH ?
This issue is a show stopper for me as when it happen I can't follow the subject anymore.
Any idea how to prevent that? I am using UHS-II V60 on both slot also JPEG only.
I have never had that happen. It sounds to me like your buffer is full because that’s what happens when the buffer fills and the camera tries to catch up. Short bursts are better. I never go longer than a second.
Worth upgrading from the XT4 in your opinion? Thanks
In my opinion yes. Just because it’s more of a photographers camera, size wise and in my opinion sans the flippy screen.
Is the buffer sufficient (for you) for sports in the xt5?
For raw shooting it fills up pretty fast. But all my sports shooting is for our daily paper so I only shoot jpgs. So no buffer problems.
